Does this mean they are mainly red, or red and indented. The redness makes me think you may be a candidate for a procedure called photorejuvenation, a new treatment for rosacea and sun damage. If there is red in the scar this procedure will help to remove it, plus stimulate the skin underneath to grow new collagen. Microdermabrasion can help smooth out superficial scars (indents) but needs to be performed multiple times. Similarly, mild chemical peels would need to be done in a series. Answer: 3 of the best choices for the acne scars would be laser resurfacing with either a carbon dioxide or an erbium yag laser, surgically removing the scars and then having a more superficial laser such as photorejuvenation, mild peels or microdermabrasion, or having treatments with the Cool Touch Laser. You need to find a laser specialist and aesthetic dermatologist. I would go to the American Society for Laser Surgery and Medicine website www.aslms.com and they have listing of their members in all geographic locations. Your hair, if dark, would best be removed by a laser as well (unfortunately a different one than we use for scars). The most expensive option is laser resuracing which would probably run more than $2500 for a full face. Most of these solutions for scarring will probably run into the $1000 range. But it would be better to consult with an experienced aesthetic dermatologist and laser surgeon to determine what it best for you. Good luck! Answer: I am not familiar with the cream you name. Assuming that you had a reaction to them and developed some type of hyperpigmentation, I would attempt to use a hydroquinone containing cream (preferably a 4% hydroquinone prescription cream such as Lustra) or an OTC version (such as Bleaching cream or gel on the skinfo.com website) as well as a retinol containing cream (again such as Afirm on the skinfo.com website) and even consider some mild chemical peels or microdermabrasion. Even though they have been there for a long time, interventions such as these may help. If these do not help, find an experienced laser surgeon who may be able to help you by going to www.aslms.org and searching for a practitioner in your area. You could consider a few "Beta-Lift" peels, which place salicylic acid in the pores to exfoliate them and allow them to shrink. Answer: Stretch marks are notoriously difficult to get rid of. They are almost like a Slinky that has been decoiled, or like a rip in the lining of a pair of pants. The only thing that can be done is to attempt to stimulate the body to make new connective tissue (collagen and elastin) and there are many things which claim to do this, but very few are proven. The most scientifically proven ingredients for new collagen production are retinoids (such as Retin-A) and alpha-hydroxy acids. You could purchase products in these families on the website at www.skinfo.com (Afirm 2X is a retinol and Soft and Smooth Body Lotion is an alpha-hydroxy acid moisturizer). Expect modest improvements that take a long time (months). Other treatments to consider would be laser and microdermabrasion. Answer: Laser resurfacing is a really intensive treatment which I would use only as a last resort. Chemical peels vary by the strength and the chemicals that are used. Mild chemical peels- salicycilic acid 20-30% (Beta-LIft Peel) or glycolic peels 30-40% virtually have no risks and in a series may help you. Another option would be microdermabrasion, which I favor as a treatment for this type of problem, but you will also need multiple treatments, at least 5-6. Finally, you could try to find someone who has a Cool Touch II Laser. These are known to improve acne scars without much risk. You mean you haven’t found Carmex yet? This lip balm is one of the greatest little creations for chapped lips, cold sores and blisters on your lips. I first discovered it when I was in Vegas several years ago and I was suffering from very dry and chapped lips (chalk it up to a Vermont guy being suddenly stuck in the middle of the desert and hiking for a week). We stopped at a convenience store and I picked up some Carmex and it was instant gratification for my lips. The Basics The balm comes in a ounce tin (7 grams), which is available in most stores. This is a twist open plastic tin, which comes in quite handy. It’s small enough to pack into your pack, your jacket or to just put in your pocket. The tin stays tight enough that even in high heat (like the inside of your car) it will not leak. If you do let it sit out and get out (or leave it in your car), I would let it cool down before you use it. As it heats up, it becomes much more runny and is almost a liquid in extreme heat. Just place it in the shade and let it cool down and it will quickly gel back up before you use it again. I haven’t noticed any sort of degradation of the quality when it melts like this – just seems like it’s something that happens when it gets hot and when it cools back down, it’s fine. While Carmex may liquefy in the car, I’ve never noticed it happening while it’s on your lips – so no balm running down your chin when you least expect it (wouldn’t that be funny?). How Do I Use It? Do we really need directions for lip balm? When you twist open the tin and look inside you’ll see a fairly yellow gel (just like the yellow lid) that is easily scooped up with your fingertip. Once it’s on your finger, just rub it on the area that you want protected. It has a slight taste to it that is hard to place. It is not a mediciny flavor like Blistex or the waxy taste like Chapstick. It is sort of sweet, but in reality, there’s not much of a taste. I’ve never had a cold sore, so I cannot vouch for the usefulness of Carmex with those, but with chapped lips, it is a lifesaver. Almost immediately you can feel a cool soothing feeling on your lips and after a few uses, your lips will be healing right up. So… Now, when I’m out west (or here in the east too) and I’m suffering from chapped lips, I pull out my tin of Carmex and enjoy the sooth feeling. For the convenience of such a small container, you are going to pay a premium. On average I have been paying about $2.000 a tin. Generally, each tin lasts, with normal use, for quite some time, I’ve yet to run out of any yet and I use it fairly regularly. Thus if you’ve got chapped lips or a cold sore, grab some Carmex and start feeling the relief. Just be aware that if you are using this as lip balm, it offers no protection against UV rays and with worries about skin cancer and UV rays, it is a good idea for everyone to be wearing some sort of sunblock whenever you will be in the sun for any extended period of time.
