Related Articles, Links Combined occlusion of the central retinal artery and vein. Iijima H , Tsumura T . Department of Ophthalmology, Yamanashi Medical College, Japan. A 56-year-old man, complaining of sudden visual loss in his left eye, demonstrated cream-colored retinal edema along a macular branch of the central retinal artery, overall delay of fluorescence in angiography and general depression of the central visual field, which were interpreted as the incomplete form of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) mimicking cilioretinal or branch retinal artery occlusion. After receiving paracentesis and fibrinolytic agents, the patient recovered his vision gradually, while the ophthalmoscopic findings progressed to show central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) changes consisting of dilated and tortuous retinal veins and scattered intraretinal hemorrhages. The condition associated with the retinal edema indicated combined obstruction of the central retinal artery and the central retinal vein (combined CRAO/CRVO). Six months later, both the ocular fundus and the vision returned to normal. The similar cases in Japanese literature in which ophthalmoscopic findings of combined CRAO/CRVO was followed by aggravation of CRVO changes with or without recovery of vision were reviewed. T96-02 Ivy Fleischer KupecJanuary 2, 1996 (301) 443-3285 FDA APPROVES RENOVA TO ASSIST IN REDUCING SKIN DAMAGE The Food and Drug Administration has approved for marketingthe prescription product Renova -- 0.05% tretinoin emollientcream -- as a treatment to assist in reducing certain kinds ofskin damage, such as fine wrinkles, spotty discoloration andrough skin. The following can be used to answer questions: Renova is marketed by Ortho Pharmaceutical Corp. and is thesister product to another Ortho product Retin-A, which wasapproved in 1971 for treating acne. Renova was approved for the treatment of damaged skin as anadjunctive agent to a comprehensive skin care and sun-avoidanceprogram. Its effectiveness is dependent on other good skin carepractices including avoiding direct sunlight, applyingsunscreens, wearing protective clothing and using moisturizinglotions. Many people can enhance skin appearance and protectskin from damage by adopting regular use of these practices andnot using Renova. Studies on Renova showed that after 24 weeks approximately30 percent of people who used the product for fine wrinkles orspotty discoloration had moderate improvement, 35 percent hadminimal improvement and 35 percent had no improvement. Amongindividuals who used the product, about 16 percent had moderateimprovement in skin roughness, 35 percent saw minimal improvementand 49 percent had no improvement. Renova does not eliminate wrinkles or repair the sun-damagedskin that leads to cancer. Nor is there evidence that Renovatreats coarse skin, deep wrinkles, skin yellowing or other skinproblems. When patients use Renova, improvement in fine wrinkling,spotty skin discoloration and rough skin occurs gradually overtime. Generally, patients notice some effect in three to fourmonths, with the most noticeable effects at about six months.Little additional improvement is expected after that time. IfRenova treatment is stopped, the improvements attained bytreatment gradually diminish. The safety of using Renova daily for more than 48 weeks hasnot been established, and Renova should not be used on patientswho are pregnant or attempting to become pregnant.
