Home Life Beauty How to Get Great Skin By: Kim Beardsmore Great skin is something that nearly everyone can cultivate. Our skin is affected by our: Genes Inner nutrition - what we eat and drink Exercise General health and well-being Emotional health, and Outer nutrition - how we take care of our skin While we can't alter our genes, we can improve our skin by making the necessary adjustments in the areas we can influence. Read on to discover the basic components of a healthy outer nutritional plan for your skin. If you seriously want great skin the very first thing to do and wear a hat and good quality sunscreen when out in the sunshine. Having said that, let's move on to understand the next three basic foundations to great skin. If you want your skin to look and feel great, careful cleansing is very important. This should be done first thing in the morning and last thing at night to remove pore-clogging dirt. Don't cleanse enough and you could find yourself prone to spots. Cleanse to often and you could be stripping away essential oils and be susceptible to dry skin or even eczema. Understanding your skin type (normal, dry or oily) and using a cleanser to match is the best foundation for great looking skin. Remember to rinse your face with warm water after using a cleanser, as any residue will continue to work on the skin if not completely removed. Our grandmother's used soap and water- isn't that good enough? Soap is not very good at removing makeup because it does not contain enough oils to dissolve the staying power that most cosmetics have today. Remember the 'tight' feeling after your have washed your fact with soap? Soap can be very drying on your skin and may wash away essential oils. Another reason not to use soap is that it is not matched to the natural balance of our skin. Soap is generally alkaline, whilst skin is naturally acidic. The second step to great outer nutrition for your skin is to tone. Toners are designed to remove any last traces of cleanser, while also helping to tighten and refine pores and prevent the build-up of dead skin cells. After toning your skin should fee and look revitalized and refreshed, and ready to be moisturized. Again you will need to apply a toner that matches your skin type. The third foundation step is to apply moisturizer to help restore the moisture loss caused by the drying effects of sunlight, central heating, wind, cold and pollution. A good daytime moisturizer would contain a sunscreen and will be easily absorbed into the skin. At night you should use a richer, more nourishing cream, as this is when your skin more readily absorbs moisture. Despite the plethora of products on the market and the myriad of additives…. the most important ingredient of any moisturizer is water! If water is just splashed on the skin it will not say there. Moisturizers are basically oil and water emulsions which contain a humectant (a substance added to another to make it moist), which attracts water and helps 'fix' it in the upper layers of the skin. Moisture that is lost firm the skin needs to be replaced quickly so that the surface of the skin is kept both soft and smooth. The living cells in the layers need water so that they will not shrivel up and die. A moisturizer can protect the skin by providing a varied between the skin and the external environment. It also prevents the loss of moisture from the deeper layers of the skin. Should people who have oily skin use a moisturizer? Moisturizers are particularly recommended for people with dry skin but everyone can benefit from using a moisturizer. You simply need to ensure that you choose the correct moisturizer for your skin type. People with oily skin should choose a moisturizer that hydrates their skin whilst helping absorb any excess oil. BTXA is popularly used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) or to diminish wrinkles, but it is also a highly effective natural substance that normalizes muscle activity and can be used to reduce pain and itch. Benefits of BTXA have been observed in treatment of hand eczema and is effective in blocking secretion of sweat, saliva and mucus in cases of Hailey-Hailey disease (a blistering disease usually treated by surgery or laser) among other ailments. In addition, "botulinum toxin A has important applications in proctology where it has become the most powerful non-surgical therapy for anal fissure," according to Uwe Wollina, author of the review. In thepast, people made their own soap from animal fats and wood ashes. Today there are very few true soaps in the traditional sense on themarket. You might recognize these soaps as products marketed withcharacteristics such as "pure". "True" soaps are regulated by theConsumer Product Safety Commission, not FDA, and do not requireingredient labeling. Most body cleansers on the market today are actually syntheticdetergent products and come under the jurisdiction of FDA. Thesedetergent cleansers are popular because they make suds easily inwater and don't form gummy deposits. Some of these detergentproducts are actually marketed as "soap" but are not true soap inthe common and legal definition of the word. If a cosmetic claim is made on the label of a "true" soap orcleanser, such as moisturizing or deodorizing, the product mustmeet all FDA requirements for a cosmetic, and the label must listall ingredients. If a drug claim is made on a cleanser or soap,such as antibacterial, antiperspirant, or anti acne, the product isa drug, and the label must list all active ingredients, as isrequired for all drug products. It was used behind your ears before perfume was usedthere. It has removed dirt and grime from your face, fingers, andknees. If you've said naughty words your mother may havethreatened to wash out your mouth with it. It has cleansed you,made you smell good, added a glow to your complexion, and helpedmake you feel fresher. But what do you really know about soap? Well, in the first place the product you regard as soap maynot be soap at all, but a synthetic detergent "beauty" or "bath"bar. These and similar names have been used by copywriters tospare the consumer the awful knowledge that she is not bathingherself with real soap, but with a synthetic detergent which,ironically, is for some purposes superior to soap. Some "soap"bars may consist of soap and synthetic detergent. Soap, as long as we can remember, has enjoyed an enviablerespect in polite society and this could be at least a part of thereason why Congress placed soap above the law in enacting the Food,Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938. This law exempted soap fromregulation as a cosmetic. So long as no cosmetic representations are made for soap,other than that it cleanses, and no claims are made that it willaffect the structure or functions of the body or treat a disease,it is beyond FDA regulation. When such claims are made the soapmust meet all FDA requirements for a cosmetic or a drug or both,whichever is appropriate. If it's represented as a drug the labelmust list all active ingredients; if represented as both a cosmeticand drug or as only a cosmetic the label must list all ingredients. For instance, if a soap is labeled as a deodorant soap, FDAconsiders this to be a cosmetic claim and the label must, as withother cosmetics, carry a list of ingredients. If the soap makes amedical claim, such as that it will cure dandruff, it is considereda drug and must carry required drug labeling and also meet FDAsafety and effectiveness requirements. Fortunately, plain soap of the noncosmetic, nondrug varietyhas earned a good reputation. Apart from the familiar sting fromgetting soap into your eyes or the peril of slipping on a bar inthe bathtub or shower, common bath and hand soap is relativelysafe. In fact we often use it to remove other substances from ourhands and skin that we think are a lot less safe. For purposes of excluding ordinary soap from regulation as acosmetic, FDA defines it as a product in which most of thenonvolatile matter consists of an alkali salt of fatty acids andwhose detergent properties are due to these alkali-fatty acidcompounds. Our ancestors often made their own soap for laundering,cleaning, and bathing from animal fats and wood ashes. Today'ssoap may contain perfumes, colors, and oils, but if it isrepresented only as soap it's out of FDA's regulatory bailiwick. Ordinary soap is regulated by the Consumer Product SafetyCommission under authority of the Hazardous Substances Act. CPSC'sjurisdiction covers most noncosmetic, nondrug substances used inthe home. If the bar you use for bathing does not claim to be a soap,it's probably a synthetic detergent product. FDA defines a cosmeticas an article intended to be used on the body for cleansing,beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering the appearance;thus, a nonsoap product intended for any of these purposes isautomatically classified as a cosmetic. Soaps and synthetic detergent cleansing agents function inwater in somewhat the same way; that is, they break down theresistance barrier between the water and the dirt, grime, oil, orother material, allowing it to be wetted and washed away. Soapworks well in soft water, but in hard water, which contains arelatively high amount of calcium in solution, the calcium and soapreact to form a gummy material called soap scum, which includesdirt and other matter. This gummy stuff is what forms the familiarring in the bathtub. The increasing number of synthetic detergent bars on themarket is due largely to their more efficient functioning in water,regardless of hardness, and because they don't form gummy depositsas does soap. There are many types of synthetic detergents,ranging from strong to mild; usually the milder types are used forpersonal cleansing. Some of the harsher detergents are capable ofcausing eye irritation or injury and manufacturers normally avoidusing these in personal bathing bars. There are consumers who mayexperience irritation or allergic skin reactions from somesynthetic detergents. Some consumers also may be allergic tofragrances, colors, or other substances added to either soaps orsynthetic detergent bars. FDA's file of about 70 reports of adverse reactions during theyears 1975 through 1977 from use of bar soaps and syntheticdetergent bars that qualify as cosmetics includes consumercomplaints about skin rash, redness, inflammation, irritation,itching, and burning among the most common problems. The ConsumerProduct Safety Commission's file of complaints and injuryinvestigations shows similar effects on the skin and eyeirritations.
