Remove any old labels from the jars. 2 In a heat-proof bowl place two teaspoons of beeswax, four teaspoons of petroleum jelly, one teaspoon of vanilla extract and a few shavings of lipstick to add colour (optional). Place the bowl in a saucepan of cold, shallow water. The water level should come up to about half way up the sides. Simmer the water gently, stirring the ingredients until melted and well mixed. 3 Remove the bowl from the saucepan using a pair of tongs and place on a wooden board. Let the lip balm set for about 20 minutes, by which time a skin will have set on the surface. Use a fork to break through this surface and stir the mixture until thoroughly mixed. 4 Spoon the mixture into small jars. Wipe away excess lip balm from the edge of the jars and leave to set for a few hours before using. (You can write the name of the lip balm with a metallic pen). Strawberry or peppermint essence can be used in place of the vanilla to give some variety to your lip balms.
