Diy skin care products: how to make a homemade facial mask You are here: PageWise Home » Do it Yourself » Origami Crafts » Diy skin care products: how to make a homemade facial mask Diy skin care products: how to make a homemade facial mask Recipe, tips and instructions on how to make a homemade facial mask that will keep your skin as soft, smooth, healthy and polished as an expensive professional facial mask. One of the great indulgences of a spa getaway is receiving the cleansing benefits of a facial mask. In fact, the pampering power of a facial mask is considered second only to that of a full-body massage. However, few people can devote much spare time or money to a lavish spa visit. If you fall into this category, you should know that being busy or broke need not hinder you from receiving the perfect facial. In fact, you can whip up your own facial mask at home if you have five spare minutes and some basic ingredients. When combined with twenty minutes, a quiet room, and a good book, your homemade beauty treatment will help you feel and look your best. Why a Facial Mask? Since the times of ancient Egypt, people have been enjoying the benefits of facial masks. In the beginning, these beauty necessities usually only consisted if raw clay dug from the earth. Women would cover their faces with the cleansing mud, allow it to dry, and rinse it away to reveal visibly more beautiful skin. It is now understood that certain clays have the ability to draw impurities out of the skin. With the addition of special ingredients, facial masks are also believed to be able to fight aging, increase moisture, combat acne, and supply vital nutrients to the skin. Most experts recommend that a facial mask be included as part of the skin care regimen at least once weekly for a healthy complexion. Basic Ingredients As mentioned earlier, the easiest facial mask to make at home consists solely of clay. However, there are several types of clays available, so examine your skin needs to choose the best one for your mask. For those with normal skin, the best clay choices are kaolin clay and rhassoul clay. Kaolin clay is a fine white clay from China reputed to draw out dirt and oil to promote a healthy complexion. Rhassoul is a brown or red clay that is considered excellent at toning and beautifying the skin because of its high mineral content. Dryer skin types will benefit from a mask made from bentonite, which is a volcanic clay used to soften and revive facial skin. If you suffer from acne, large pores, or a dull complexion, take advantage of the deep-cleaning power or French green clay. Anyone prone to oily or troubled skin will love the effects they get from fuller's earth. This clay is a powerful cleanser but should be used sparingly because it can cause skin lightening over time. Recipe Making a simple clay facial mask is incredibly fast and easy. To begin, prepare a container with a screw top lid by thoroughly washing and drying it. This will hold the mask and keep it from drying out. Next, combine a half cup of your chosen clay and an equal amount of distilled water in a bowl. Mix the two constantly until you have made a mud of uniform consistency. Transfer the mask into your container and seal it tightly. To use the mask, apply approximately two tablespoons to the face, allow it to dry for fifteen to twenty minutes, and rinse it off with tepid water. Additives for Problem Skin Apart from the clay base, other ingredients can provide relief for those who suffer from problem skin. Many food items, when added to a basic facial mask, can help you win the battle against acne. Since the purpose of this article is to offer cheap and easy to find ingredients, you will only find items that you likely have in your kitchen or cupboards here. The first and best suggestion I have for breakout-prone skin is honey. Just one teaspoon of this incredible substance in a mask will inhibit the growth of bacteria, soften the skin, and penetrate the pores to fight pimple-causing infections. There are also several astringent fruits and vegetables that you may wish to add to keep your skin clear. Try a tablespoon of pureed cucumber, tomato, parsley, watermelon, or strawberries. Add three capsules of vitamin E oil if you choose any of these items since they may spoil otherwise. Anti-Aging Additives While there is no magic bullet to stop the aging process, certain ingredients can restore the nutrients and moisture that keep skin looking young. Some of the easiest of these to obtain are dairy products, which are rich in nourishing vitamins and proteins. Blend in a tablespoon of powdered buttermilk, goat's milk, or whole cow's milk to enrich a basic facial mask. You may also enjoy the softening benefits of honey, a tablespoon of which will be sufficient for one batch. A tablespoon of pureed avocado or banana will give your facial extra moisturizing power as well as a healthy dose of vitamins and beneficial oils. Again, add vitamin E to preserve any delicate ingredients. By using your crafting skills and readily available ingredients, you can whip up a decadent facial mask any time you want. With weekly use, a facial mask will cleanse the face of accumulated dirt and excess oils, giving you a flawless complexion. It will also give you a healthy glow as it tightens and smoothes the skin. Your homemade facial masks will reveal your natural beauty without straining your finances, which will make you feel as incredible as you look. Always good, without pretention or too much fluff Posted by ladylu on 01/05/2006 This is undoubtedly the best spa in the state, if not absolutely one of the best in the country. I've been going there for years, and have tried out several others that spring up around the city. They're all nice; they don't seem to have the essense the Finnish Touch brings time and time again. My skin always feels rejuvenated and it definitely glows as promised. I Get the microdermabrasion once a month. Timeline of events Key Points Lasers, sandpaper, acids and toxins are now used in cosmetic treatments Botox is a diluted food poison used to temporarily paralyse muscles. 50,000 Botox injections were ordered in the UK last year Collagen is a liquid made from the connective tissue of cows or pigs and is injected under the skin for cosmetic purposes Extreme cosmetic treatments cannot halt the ageing process. They nearly all require regular top-ups to maintain the effect. Wrinkles have a habit of returning All cosmetic procedures carry risks and can go wrong. Patients are advised to think carefully before choosing to undergo a treatment Is Botox dangerous? Botox is 'botulinum toxin A' - a diluted form of a food poison, which blocks nerve signals and causes paralysis Botox was licensed by the US food and Drug Administration for cosmetic use in April 2002 With repeated treatments permanent thinning of the muscles can occur Tiny amounts of Botox relax the facial muscles used in frowning and raise the eyebrows, removing wrinkles Side effects can include weakness in neighbouring muscles, a droopy eyebrow or eyelid and headaches The effects of a single botox injection are only temporary. In three to four months, muscle action returns Botox injections can interfere with a patient's ability to eat, speak and blink 50,000 vials of Botox were used in the UK last year. Many patients are going back for repeat treatments The American Academy of Dermatology has issued a warning against Botox parties, especially those involving alcohol Botox is one of the fastest growing cosmetic treatments in the world Fashion fads in history Men and women have been prepared to suffer for the sake of their appearance for centuries. During her reign, Queen Elizabeth I started a fashion for pale skin. Ladies began to paint their faces with a cream made from powdered white lead, egg white and vinegar. Fashionably pale These creams gave the face a shiny appearance and smiling could easily 'crack' the face. The noxious effects of the lead paint caused many problems and even some deaths. In the 1700s, black patches were stuck to the skin to cover the scars caused by toxic face creams. Cameron Diaz Baby faces are beautiful Nowadays, movie stars such as Cameron Diaz are seen by many as the ideal of beauty. In fact, the attraction of young faces may have a scientific explanation. Big, wide-spaced eyes, plump cheeks and soft, unmarked skin are sometimes retained into maturity. These faces are the ones found to be the most eye-catching. In scientific studies, pictures of people with 'baby faces' inspired feelings of affection and care in those tested. Cosmetic treatments are increasingly popular because they are quicker, less painful and more subtle than plastic surgery. Many treatments are being hailed as a 'lunch hour' facelift because of their speed. Next page: there are over a million Botox devotees in the US. Find out more about Botox .
