Do you envy women with head-to-toe, naturally gorgeous skin? No need to. It may not be just heredity and a good moisturizer that’s making their skin so beautiful. It could be the simple, but often overlooked, art of exfoliation that’s keeping their beautiful skin aglow. What is exfoliation? The word exfoliate means “to separate or flake off in thin layers or scales,” which doesn’t sound like something we’d want to happen to our faces and bodies. But in truth, exfoliation is an essential component of skin care. Regular soap and cleansers only swipe at the skin’s surface; they don’t lift off old dead cells to expose the shiny new ones below. When you exfoliate, you’re sloughing off dead skin and exposing the fresher, brighter, younger cells beneath. Why exfoliate? “Exfoliation can give the skin a look of greater radiance, give the appearance of tightening the pores and over time maybe reduce the appearance of fine lines,” says Dr. Jason Rivers, a Professor of Dermatology at the University of British Columbia. It can also make the skin feel softer and boost the effectiveness of moisturizing products by helping them penetrate more deeply. The right product makes it easy! Most exfoliating products contain small particles that actually scrape off loose skin cells. They can be made from ground apricot pits, bran flakes and even plastic bags. The key here is to be mindful of your skin type and choose a gentle exfoliator. Natural substances may be too rough for dry, sensitive skin. Likewise, products with added oils can clog pores if you have oily skin. So, to be safe, try a product with a light texture and fine particles. Exfoliating 24/7 Dermatologists recommend exfoliating your face once or twice a week and your body at least three times a week. The milder and more gentle your exfoliating product, the more frequently you can use it. Ian Hutson, owner of the Camden Spa in Toronto, claims that he frequently sees people who exfoliate every day. And who can blame them? A once-over with a gently exfoliating bar or scrub perks up circulation, invigorates the body and feels great. Dove Exfoliating Bar and Body Wash Many exfoliating products and scrubs on the market today employ harsh chemicals or abrasives (e.g. nutshells, pumice stone, glycolic acid) to remove dead skin cells. But not Dove Exfoliating Bar and Exfoliating Body Wash. Both contain specially formulated blue beads with ultra-fine exfoliants which make them gentle enough for daily use. Dove Exfoliating Bar and Exfoliating Body Wash combine the benefits of a moisturizing base with ultra-fine exfoliants that gently polish away dull, lifeless skin, so the skin is better prepared to absorb Dove’s moisturizers which soften and condition skin. And Dove’s gentle exfoliants help this process occur naturally - without stripping away young, healthy skin cells - leaving your skin smooth and silky and without the redness and irritation that is often associated with other exfoliators. Hand care products storageOral Health Resources - Hand Hygiene FAQ National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Oral Health Resources Oral Health Home | Contact Us Infection Control Fact Sheets FAQs Glossary Guidelines Publications Screening and Evaluation Forms Infection Control Frequently Asked Questions Hand Hygiene On this page What is hand hygiene? Indications for hand hygiene Types of hand hygiene Hand care products storage Do lotions affect gloves? References and Footnotes What is hand hygiene? Hand hygiene is a general term that applies to routine hand washing, antiseptic hand wash, antiseptic hand rub, or surgical hand antisepsis. What are indications for hand hygiene? Hand hygiene substantially reduces potential pathogens on the hands and is considered a primary measure for reducing the risk of transmitting organisms to patients and health care personnel (HCP). Hospital-based studies have shown that noncompliance with hand hygiene practices is associated with health care-associated infections, the spread of multi-resistant organisms, and has been a major contributor to outbreaks. Studies also have shown that the prevalence of health care-associated infections decreased as hand hygiene measures improved. Indications for hand hygiene include the following: Before and after treating each patient (e.g., before glove placement and after glove removal). After barehanded touching of inanimate objects likely to be contaminated by blood, saliva, or respiratory secretions. Before leaving the dental operatory. When hands are visibly soiled. Before regloving, after removing gloves that are torn, cut, or punctured. For oral surgical procedures, perform surgical hand antisepsis before donning sterile surgical gloves. Back to Top What are the different types of hand hygiene? Methods Agent Purpose Area Duration (minimum) Routine Handwash Water and non-antimicrobial soap (i.e., plain soap 1 ) Remove soil and transient 2 microorganisms All surfaces of the hands and fingers 15 seconds 3 Antiseptic handwash Water and antimicrobial soap (e.g., chlorhexidine, iodine and iodophors, chloroxylenol [PCMX], triclosan) Remove or destroy transient microorganisms and reduce resident 5 flora (persistent activity) 8 All surfaces of the hands and fingers 15 seconds 3 Antiseptic handrub Alcohol-based handrub 4 Remove or destroy transient microorganisms and reduce resident 5 flora (persistent activity) 8 All surfaces of the hands and fingers Until the hands are dry Surgical Antisepsis Water and antimicrobial soap (e.g., chlorhexidine, iodine and iodophors, chloroxylenol [PCMX], triclosan) Remove or destroy transient microorganisms and reduce resident flora (persistent activity) Hands and forearms 6 26 minutes Water and non-antimicrobial soap (i.e., plain soap 1 ) followed by an alcohol-based surgical hand scrub product with persistent activity Follow manufacturer instructions for surgical hand scrub product with persistent activity 7 Back to Top How should hand care products be stored? Hand care products, including plain (non-antimicrobial) soap and antiseptic products, can become contaminated or support the growth of microorganisms. Liquid products should be stored in closed containers and dispensed from either disposable containers or containers that are washed and dried thoroughly before refilling. Soap should not be added to a partially empty dispenser, because this practice of "topping off" might lead to bacterial contamination of soap and negate the beneficial effect of hand cleaning and disinfection. Store and dispense products according to manufacturers instructions. Back to Top Do hand lotions affect the integrity of gloves? Petroleum-based lotion formulations can weaken latex gloves and increase permeability. However, lotions are often recommended to ease the dryness resulting from frequent hand washing and more recently to prevent dermatitis resulting from glove use. Yes, the primary defense against infection and transmission of pathogens is healthy unbroken skin. Frequent hand washing with soaps and antiseptic agents can cause chronic irritant contact dermatitis among dental health care personnel. Damage to the skin changes skin flora, resulting in more frequent colonization by staphylococci and gram-negative bacteria. The potential of detergents to cause skin irritation can vary considerably, but can be reduced by adding emollients. Lotions that contain petroleum or other oil emollients should only be used at the end of the workday. If using lotions during the workday, select a water-based product. At the time of product selection, information should be obtained from the manufacturer regarding interaction between gloves, lotions, dental materials, and antimicrobial products. Back to Top Footnotes Pathogenic organisms have been found on or around bar soap during and after use. Using liquid soap with hands-free controls for dispensing is preferable. Transient microorganisms often acquired by health care personnel during direct contact with patients or contaminated environmental surfaces. Transient microorganisms most frequently associated with health care-associated infections and are more amenable to removal by routine hand washing than resident flora. Time reported as effective in removing most transient flora from the skin. For most procedures, a vigorous, brief (at least 15 seconds) rubbing together of all surfaces of premoistened lathered hands and fingers followed by rinsing under a stream of cool or tepid water is recommended. Hands should always be dried thoroughly before donning gloves. Resident flora are species of microorganisms that are always present on or in the body; not easily removed by mechanical friction; and less likely to be associated with health-care-associated infections. Waterless products (e.g., alcohol-based hand rub) are especially useful when water facilities are unavailable (e.g., during dental screenings in schools) or during boil-water advisories. Alcohol-based hand rubs should not be used in the presence of visible soil or organic material. Removal of all jewelry, washing as described above, holding the hands above the elbows during final rinsing, and drying the hands with sterile towels. Before beginning surgical hand scrub, remove all arm jewelry and any hand jewelry that may make donning gloves more difficult, cause gloves to tear more readily, or interfere with glove usage (e.g., ability to wear the correct-sized glove or altered glove integrity). Persistent activity. Prolonged or extended activity that prevents or inhibits proliferation or survival of microorganisms after application of a product. Previously, this property was sometimes terms residual activity. Because everyone's skin regenerates at a different rate, allow at least thirty days before expecting to see outward signs of improvement. As we say, "THE PROOF IS IN THE PICTURE". We encourage all users to take a picture before starting, again on day 15 and again on day 30. Send us your results! Wrinkling of Skin The first signs of wrinkles usually appear in the delicate tissue around the eyes--smile lines or "crow's feet." Next, the cheeks and lips show damage. With age, our skin becomes both thinner and dryer, which contributes to the formation of wrinkles. Other factors which help to determine both the rate and the extent of wrinkling include; muscle tone, diet and nutrition, habitual facial expressions, stress, lack of proper skin care, exposure to environmental pollutants, and lifestyle habits such as smoking. Heredity also plays a small role. The most important factor is sun exposure, which not only dries out the skin but also leads to free radical damage to the skin cells. The sun is your skin's worst enemy. It is estimated that 90 percent of what we think of, as signs of age are actually signs of overexposure. Overexposure does not necessarily mean sunbathing or sunburn; approximately 70 percent of sun damage takes place during everyday activities such as driving and walking to and from your car. The ultraviolet-A (UVA) rays that do this damage are present all day long and in all seasons. Worse, the effects of the sun are cumulative, although they may not be obvious for many years. For Optimum Skin Results, follow these guidelines: Eat a well-balanced diet that includes many fruits and vegetables, preferably raw, to provide your skin with the nutrients it needs. Also eat whole grains, seeds, nuts, and legumes. Drink at least 2 quarts of distilled water with 1 teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar (mixed in water) every day. This helps to keep the skin hydrated and to flush away toxins, discouraging the formation of wrinkles. Avoid saturated fats and animal fats. Do not smoke, and avoid alcohol and caffeine. These substances dry out the skin, making it more vulnerable to wrinkling. In addition, the smoking habit means using one's lips hundreds of times each day. The creases that form when you inhale from a cigarette often develop into wrinkles at a comparatively early age. No matter what your age or skin type, protect yourself from the sun. Always apply a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 to all exposed areas of skin, especially your face, regardless of the season or the weather. Get regular exercise. Like other organs of the body, skin gets its nourishment from the bloodstream. Exercise increases the circulation of blood to the skin. We recommend aerobic exercise 3-5 times weekly. Exercise your face. Sit in a chair and extend your jaw in an exaggerated chewing motion. Stretch the muscles under your chin and the front of your neck. Gently massage the muscles in your face 1x daily. Make sure your hands are clean. Avoid alcohol-based toning products. Use witch hazel or herbal/floral water instead. Pay attention to your facial expressions. If you find yourself squinting, raising your eyebrows, or making some other potentially wrinkle-inducing expression over and over again, you can make a conscious effort to stop. Avoid using harsh soaps or solid cleansing creams such as cold cream on your face. use natural oils such as avocado oil instead to remove dirt and old makeup. Apply it gently to your face and rinse it off with warm distilled water. Tap water contains chlorine and fluoride, which KILL skin cells. Do not apply heavy oils around the eye area before going to bed. This may cause eyes to be puffy in the morning. Limit your use of cosmetics, and choose the ones you do use carefully. Do not share your cosmetics, and replace them every three months. Use Parfait Visage daily Note: Because everyone's skin regenerates at a different rate, allow at least thirty days before expecting to see outward signs of improvement. As we say, "THE PROOF IS IN THE PICTURE". We encourage all users to take a picture before starting, again on day 15, and again on day 30. Send us your results. This banner was generously and humorouslycontributed by Chris McClusky! :-) For a more detailed explanation,go to the MOSTFrequently AskedQuestions page. Also... take a look at the NEW! TroubleshootingHelp page, for those frustrating failed batches! I have been making our soap for over 20 years and in the beginningwe got some of the materials from raising our own beef. Since gettinghooked up with the Internet and reading about what other folks weredoing, I've found sources for both animal and vegetable fats thathave really opened up other possibilities for recipe combinations. We've gotten spoiled using our own soap... it leaves you cleanwithout feeling dry and itchy. I've given it to friends who haveallergies or skin conditions and they have found it to help them inclearing up the problem. If you have any of the latent chemist inyour soul...you will LOVE watching the transformation as you mix thelye solution into the fat and continue to watch it change as itcures! No one can walk by a table of curing soap, without having theuncontrollable urge to pick up a bar to touch and smell it. I've put together the following, starting off with the firstinformation I could get as a novice soapmaker. During the earlyattempts, nine batches separated before I got it down! (Determined!)In the fall of 1998, I read about using a "stick blender" and it hasrevolutionized my soapmaking techniques and vastly improved thetexture of the finished soap! New things are being learned all thetime and I'll try to pass those ideas along to you by updating theinformation on these pages. Since the site was first put up with asingle page on soapmaking (the old lye company instructions) I haveexperimented with many all-vegetable recipe combinations. Some ofthese produce a harder and longer lasting bar than others and I'vetried to note the ones that are my favorites. The others I leave upto offer other possibilities for those who want to use what they haveon hand. My current personal favoritebase recipes are the SudsyAll-Vegetable , SoapClassic , Favorite CastileII , and the Beef Shorteningwith Coconut ... but there are many others that work nicely. Someof the recipes that are high in unsaturated oils and lower in hardfats can have a greater tendency to sweat in storage but I haven'tfigured out exactly what the problem is with that... just wanted tomention it. -Kathy Miller- P.S. - My life has gottenbusier than it was when I first started this web page so I cannotupdate as frequently. Also... many of the questions I receive andanswer are repeats of situations already posted. I'll try to keepupdating once in awhile, but be assured, I'm still "out there" ...despite the lack of current update on some of the pages of thesite. NEW! on GardenPage... Garden Desktop Images Meet the Miller Family Miller Favorite Family Recipes (Food... not soap!) Page Name and Link Description of Page Contents Soap Handouts in PDF Format I've had these handouts on my computer for a long time... for use in classes I've taught. They are a distillation of the most valuable information from the site, and although not totally updated, should be useful to those who want printouts of the basics. Thanks to my new Mac... I can save them in PDF format for viewing and downloading. If you plan to teach a soapmaking class, you are free to use these materials. :-) NEW! I've added a page on Troubleshooting your botched batches. Traditional Methods with Notes This was originally the first page of the site. It is the old lye company instructions with my notes included. It gives you an old basic tallow/lard recipe and also instructions on things such as how to render , preparing and cleaning fats, temperatures, reclaiming separated batches (there are better ways, however!). They also give some soap variations and recipe suggestions. This is where I started and it has some helpful information on the basics of soapmaking and working with raw fats. MODERN Soapmaking Procedures Here is how I make soap now, with lots of suggestions on the following subjects: Mixing technique using a stick blender , swirling techniques, working with fragrance oils, using a box mold and cutting soap using a miter box , how to make soap balls, coloring soap with alkanet root... Design Your Own Recipe! This page is a MUST read! It covers saponification values, lye calculation and discounting, properties of oils and gives rules of thumb for using colorants, fragrance, how much liquid , etc. Some generous soapmakers contributed this delightful soapy explanation with illustrations in order to visually explain the process of Saponification and Lye Discounting . I just love this! Thanks to Pat B! and Jennifer Davis of Canis Art! Here is the link: http://www.canis-art.com/soaping.htm Soap Recipe Spreadsheet Template Chris Mathes, a generous computer savvy soaper, contributed this Excel Spreadsheet Template for your use! Go to this page to download the template, read about what it can offer and how to use it. Where to Find Ingredients Here's a good page to read if you're not sure where to start looking for things like lye, base oils, fragrances, etc. with sections on fragrance addition rate, colorants and "cheap" soap molds. It also has pictures of the common brands of lye sold in the U.S. and Canada so you'll know what you're looking for. All-Vegetable Soaps and Recipes Recipes using only vegetable oils as a base. I've posted many combinations for folks who have limited availability of oils... but personally prefer some recipes more than others for overall quality. Those are noted. Recipes Using Animal Fats I've posted a few "improved" tallow/lard recipes that incorporate coconut and olive oils for a better bar. Also, there are some recipes contributed by others. Castile Soap Recipes These are recipes that have a majority of olive oil in their makeup. I don't have one with 100% olive because it's kind of a pain to work with and the resulting bars are more prone to getting spongy and slimy in use. Some folks love them, however! No Scale? Soap Recipes Using Fluid Measures My friend, Rachael, submitted this helpful information for those who do not have a scale. With the new larger size of lye container, they will still need to find a way to weigh out the lye, however. Here you will find a liquid conversion chart that will allow you to measure the various oils in a typical fluid measuring cup that is designed for the weight of water (like a Pyrex glass measuring cup). She has also submitted recipes based on common sizes of fats at time of purchase. TROUBLESHOOTING Help! NEW! NEW! I've listed the most common problems and how to avoid them in the future. You'll also find some suggestions for various rebatching techniques . "Soapy Success" and FAQ's Here you will find tons of questions and experiences from other soapers. Before you ask me a question, take a look at the 'Soapy Success' pages because it's quite likely to have been answered there already (and notice that I've now added a new TROUBLESHOOTING page). It got so big that I broke some of it off into the two following pages. This main page is mostly the experiences and general questions of others. Before you dive into this, check out the new MOST Frequently Asked Questions page. It might save you time and me an email! :-) Botched Batches Read about other people's fiascoes and find out what went wrong! ...Great therapy if you're having trouble. ;-) Rebatching, Remelting, Remilling, etc. If your batch suffered a fatal separation, go here to read about how to reclaim it. Rachael's Tips on Making Clear Glycerin Soap Rachael Levitan and Jeff Bobeck both generously shared their methods for making clear glycerin soap from cold process soap scraps. If you have problems... better ask them and not me! I never mastered this. :-) pH Testing in Soap - Article by Ann-Perius Parker (reprinted with permission) With her permission, I'm posting wonderful pH information from Ann-Perius Parker, who has done a lot of research on the subject. I personally don't pH test my soaps, but many of you ask about this. What Type of Soaper Are You?
