Beauty Tip: Inexpensive Face Masks treatments from your cupboard Coldcut interview We spoke to Jon More about what has been, how things are, and what is to come. Beauty Tip: Inexpensive Face Masks treatments from your cupboard Mayonnaise Apply whole egg mayonnaise on your face (right from the jar) for about 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water. Peach & Brandy Mash up a peach (use ripe, canned or frozen) and mix in a tablespoon of brandy. Leave it on for 20 minutes, then rinse off. Tomato Mask For oily skin, mash up a ripe tomato and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with warm (not hot) water. Banana Mash Mash up a very ripe banana. Add just enough honey to make a soft pulp. Apply over face and hair. This is such a great firming mask that aging movie stars have been known to put it in the cups of their bras to make their breasts "perky." (Just make sure that you don't use too much honey and you use a sturdy bra.) Honey Mask Apply pure honey (straight from the bottle) to your face and neck. Allow it to set until dry (about 15 minutes). Rinse with very warm water. Milko f Magnesia Apply it straight from the bottle. Let it dry for about five to ten minutes. Rinse off with warm water, then gently pat your face dry with a fluffy towel. Pepto Bismol This is a face mask particularly suited for those with sensitive skin. In the same way that this product coats the stomach, it gently caresses the face. Apply it straight from the bottle, using a cotton swab. Allow to dry, then rinse with cool water. Tips from eHow Users: Bright eyes by eHow Friend To give your eyes a fantastic boost and to improve micro circulation around the delicate eye area, grate some refrigerated potato, mix it into a paste with a bit of green clay, and apply a nice, nourishing eye cream to the area. Or use rose hip essential oil. Put gauze over the area and apply the paste and relax for 15 minutes. It works absolute wonders for the eyes! Rate this tip: Easy facial tips by Angela I love to do facials, and I found a way that really works: 1: Wash face with a gentle cleanser, then gently scrub off and dead skin. 2: Put a damp face cloth in warm water with herbs like tea or sage, and/or essential oils like lavender or rose, and put the water in the microwave for 35 seconds. Then lay the cloth over your face for 10-15 minutes to loosen dirt, oil, or anything else that might be in your skin. 3: Last, put on a mask, peel off or mud/clay, to take away all the things the hot towel loosened. ( NewsUSA ) - Have you ever gone to wash your face only to then discover that there are just a few drops left of your prized moisturizer? This may mean that the man in your life has been using your skin care products - again. While the basic structure of a man's skin may be the same as a woman's, his skin has quite a few unique characteristics that make sharing facial products an unwise practice. For instance, even though signs of aging appear in men's skin similarly as they do for women, they don't necessarily happen on the same time scale. Men's skin also is thicker than women's, making it tougher and somewhat more resilient. Further, the oil glands in men's skin produce more oil than women's, giving men more "natural" moisture. Because of differences such as these, it's clear that men and women have different health needs for their skin. Unfortunately, however, men's skin care products have been limited until recently. As more men become motivated to feel and look their best, more products that are made especially for men's skin care needs are hitting stores' shelves. In particular, L'Oreal, one of the leaders in technology-driven skin care treatments, has created Men's Expert, the first anti-aging line on the mass retail market for men. Men's Expert products contain what L'Oreal calls an Active Defense System, or ADS, which is a powerful combination of active ingredients that increase the skin's resiliency and help protect it against shaving irritation. The Men's Expert line includes products such as Power Clean, a face wash that deep-cleans skin without drying it out; Oil Controller, an anti-shine moisturizer that zaps away oil, soothes razor burn and is designed for teenagers and young adults; and Vita Lift, an anti-wrinkle and firming moisturizer that recoups elasticity for men in their late 40s. Hermann, MD Is your face aging faster than you are? As we get older, the signs of aging begin to creep up. Years of sun exposure and the natural aging process cause the skin to thin and lose its elasticity. Wrinkles (smile lines) begin to form around the eyes, forehead and mouth. Sunspots (liver spots) may appear and our skin seems to lose some of its youthful glow. Although this is a normal part of aging, there are things we can to do to slow down the process. Daily skin care Wash your face with moisturizing gentle cleansers (Cetaphil, Basis, and Dove). Moisturize each morning with oil-free moisturizers if acne prone (Theraplex Hydrolotion, Cetaphil Facial Lotion, etc.) or a heavier moisturizer if you are drier (Eucerin Facial Lotion, Oil of Olay, etc.). Apply a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher on a daily basis. Consider a vitamin-A cream (retinal) or alpha hydroxy acid lotion at bedtime. These help to increase the collagen and elastic fibers in our skin that decrease fine lines and wrinkles. Skin Rejuvenation In addition to non-prescription skin care products, a variety of skin restoration procedures are now available to tackle skin aging at every level and every age. These help to minimize deeper wrinkles and creases, and even out skin tones. Chemical peels (alpha and beta hydroxy acid) are a great method to diminish fine lines and even out skin tones. After a series of five to six peels, skin feels and looks more youthful. The solution penetrates skin follicles, making it well suited to minimize conditions such as acne and enlarged pores. The recovery time is minimal. Microdermabrasion (Rejuvasilk) is a revolutionary new skin restoration process that uses a highly controlled vacuum and pressure to move microscopically abrasive crystals over the surface of the skin. This action causes little or no discomfort while it gently removes the outer layer of the skin. By repeating the process over the course of several weeks or months, younger, softer skin moves to the surface, revealing significant textural and color changes. Patients may return to activities immediately and all skin types can be treated. Botox With every smile, laugh or frown, the underlying facial muscles contract, causing wrinkles on the skins surface. With age, these expression wrinkles deepen. For more than 15 years, Botox injections have been safely used to relax the underlying muscle so the skin remains smooth. Botox injections are virtually painless, safe and produce results within a few days. No sedation or local anesthetic is required and patients can resume normal activities immediately. Laser Skin Resurfacing Laser skin resurfacing is the most effective way to permanently remove deeper wrinkles and acne scars. We use a combination of Carbon Dioxide and Ebrium lasers to remove wrinkles around the eyes, lips and cheeks. The laser stimulates the production of collagen, creating a tightening and smoothing of the skin. The skin is healed in seven to ten days and the results last for years. Laser Hair Removal Due to genetic and hormonal influences, unwanted facial and body hair can increase as we mature. Laser hair removal is the safest and most effective way for long-term reduction of unwanted hair for men and women. The EpiTouch Alexandrite laser safely removes hair without damaging delicate spores and structures of the skin. Traditional hair removal techniques, such as shaving, plucking and waxing, provide only temporary relief. Electrolysis is helpful, but often requires years of ongoing and frequently painful treatments. With laser hair removal, the majority of hair is permanently gone after a series of five to six treatments. In fact, all body areas can be treated safely and with minimal discomfort. Additional touchups may be needed periodically, but the hair that does regrow is usually finer and lighter. Recovery is immediate. We would be happy to answer any questions you have regarding facial rejuvenation or any of the many services and products we offer. By: James J. Hermann, MD Fifteen-year-old Amy says she breaks out badly every few weeks. I dont want to go out much when this happens because Im embarrassed about the way I look. My parents keep telling me this is part of being a teenager and it will eventually go away. I feel like it will last forever. Amy is not alone. Acne is the most common skin disorder in the United States, affecting about 17 million Americans, including more than 85 percent of all teenagers and 60 to 70 percent of adults. Acne can attack self-esteem as well as the skin, but the good news is that with todays treatments, it can be effectively controlled. For mild cases, topical retinoids and benzoyl peroxides are very helpful. Oral antibiotics are added for more inflammatory cases. For severe cases Accutane (isotretinoin), which contains a synthetic vitamin-A derivative, can be a miracle cure. Although Accutane has potential side effects, it has made dramatic differences in millions of people who suffer from cystic scarring acne. Many conditions mimic acne, such as rosacea, an adult disease that looks like acne but is treated differently. Foliculitis, an infection of the hair follicle that causes pimples, also resembles acne but is cause by bacteria that are commonly picked up from unclean water. A dermatologist can differentiate these conditions and provide the proper treatment. Q & A What causes acne? Fluctuating hormone levels during adolescence, and throughout a womans cycle, can cause the oil or sebaceous glands of the skin to produce more sebum or oil. Sebaceous glands are found with a hair shaft in a unit called a sebaceous follicle. During times of hormonal fluctuation, skin cells that line the follicle begin to shed more rapidly. In acne-prone people, cells shed and stick together more so than in people who do not develop acne. The mixture of oil and cells also helps bacteria in the follicles grow. These bacteria make chemicals that can cause the wall of the follicle to break. Then sebum, bacteria and shed skin cells spill into the skin, causing redness, swelling and infection, resulting in a pimple. What can I do to prevent it from getting worse? Wash your face twice a day and after heavy exercise. Use warm water and a mild oil-free soap. Use skin care products (sunscreens and makeup) labeled either oil-free or noncomedogenic. Shampoo your hair daily if you have oily hair. Avoid abrasive cleaners and sponges which can increase inflammation. Dont pick or squeeze pimples. That may delay healing and increase the risk of scarring. Be careful that hair sprays and gels dont get on your face, because they can block your pores. Eat a well-balanced diet and avoid excess amounts of chocolate, fatty and greasy foods. Seeking medical help from a dermatologist can avoid both physical and emotional problems further down the road. Hermann, MD Although spring is here, Midwest weather can still remain quite cool, resulting in dry, itchy skin. People who swim a lot, use a hot tub, or like hot showers, are particularly susceptible. Here are some helpful hints to make cold weather activities more comfortable. Chlorine and bromide used in pools can increase the dryness of your skin. Be sure to rinse off well after swimming. Use luke-warm water when showering. Hot water causes more evaporation and increased water loss from your skin. Hot tub use will also aggravate dry skin. Limit your time in the tub, rinse well after, and moisturize. Use very mild soaps. Avoid antibacterial soaps, as these are usually more drying. Good ones include Dove, Cetaphil and Basis. Moisturize immediately after showering while your skin is still moist. Good products include: Theraplex Hydrolotion, a light moisturizer, great for the face, and recommended if you are acne-prone. Amlactin Lotion contains a 12 percent alpha-hydroxy (lactic) acid solution, and is great for retaining water in the skin. Eucerin-Plus Cream is a heavy moisturizer for very dry skin . By: James J. Hermann, MD Many people routinely visit tanning salons for a pre-tan before heading off to a sun-filled vacation during the winter and spring without realizing that this activity places them in the high-risk category for skin cancer and other health problems. While traditional sunbathing is a seasonal health hazard in most parts of the United States, indoor tanning casts a year-round shadow. The truth is that standing in front of a sunlamp or lying on a tanning bed significantly raises the risk of skin cancer, wrinkles and vision abnormalities (cataract formation). The following statistics may provide some food for thought: The incidence of melanoma (the most deadly form of skin cancer) more than doubled among Caucasians between 1973 and 1994. Skin cancer is the most rapidly increasing form of cancer in America today. A single 15-to-30-minute salon session exposes the body to the same amount of harmful UV light as a day at the beach. Sunless tanning lotions are a safe alternative. However, they do not provide sun protection. Apply a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher on a regular basis when outside.
