How to make your own face mask Make your own facial mask With all the wonderful cosmetic masks available these days, you'll never want for an exotic concoction to 'feed your face'. But why not give yourself one of the simplest, quickest DIY beauty treats and create your own? You may not think your kitchen is particularly well stocked, but chances are you have enough ingredients on hand to make a fabulous face mask. The only equipment you'll need is a mixing bowl, a fork, a wooden spoon and a few fresh ingredients. A blender or food processor will also be helpful if you want to save preparation time, but it isn't essential. Below are some basic masks for different skin types, but feel free to use your imagination when making your own. The advantage of homemade masks, of course, is that because they use fresh ingredients, they're free of additives and preservatives. You can even make yours 100 per cent organic if you choose. Enjoy these facial indulgences, which will help moisturise and exfoliate skin, leaving it with a healthy glow: Nourishing face mask for dry skin You will need: 2 oz/60g ripe avocado flesh 1 oz/25g orange juice 1 tsp/5g pure acacia honey 1 tsp/5g molasses 5 drops chamomile essential oil Put all the ingredients in a blender, or mash by hand in a bowl. Add extra orange juice if the mixture is too thick. Use your fingers to spread the mask over your face and neck and leave it on for at least 30 minutes, preferably longer, before removing. Use a warm flannel to rinse off the mask - this will help gently exfoliate skin as well as clean your face. This mask will keep for a day or two in the fridge if you don't use it all. Honey face mask for sensitive skin Warm a small pot of honey in a double boiler, then test a small amount on your hand to make sure it's not too hot. When warm, apply the honey generously over your entire face. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm, then cool water. Egg white mask for oily skin You will need: 1 egg white 6 drops witch hazel 6 drops lemon juice Whisk the egg white until it's stiff, and then add the remaining ingredients. Gently apply the mixture to your face, avoiding your eyes. Leave to dry for 15 minutes or so. Rinse well with warm water. Marie Antoinette's face mask This wife of King Louis XVI of France was a legendary beauty. Many believe that this mixture was the secret of her clear and glowing skin - so much so that it's still used as a popular facial treatment in France. This mask is suitable for all skin types, but the witch hazel and lemon can be harsh on dry skin. If you indulge, be sure to use your regular moisturiser afterwards. You will need: 1 egg Juice of one lemon 4 tbsp cup non-fat dry milk powder 1 tbsp witch hazel Put all the ingredients in a blender or food processor and mix well. Alternatively, you can blend them together by using a fork or a wire whisk. Apply the mixture to your face, neck and chest and allow it to dry for around 15 minutes. Use the remaining cream as a cleanser to remove the mask. Then, rinse your face thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. Butter face mask You will need: 1 tbsp unsalted butter, softened 1 large strawberry, mashed Or 1 2.5-cm (1 inch) slice of cucumber, chopped and rubbed through a sieve (for normal to dry skin) Or 1 tbsp lemon juice (for oily skin) Or 1 egg yolk (for dry skin) Beat the butter in a bowl, then beat in your chosen ingredient. Apply mask immediately and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove with a wet, warm washcloth. Butter is a good source of vitamin A, so it makes a perfect mask for sensitive, sunburned or damaged skin.

Use a loofah, exfoliating gloves or a synthetic scrubbing sponge designed for the face. 3. Apply an exfoliating cleanser specially designed for faces to the loofah or sponge. Some exfoliating cleansers contain up to 25 percent pumice, and these should never be used on the face. 4. Rub your face with the loofah or sponge using circular motions. Avoid scrubbing under the eyes, because the skin there is thin and easily damaged by abrasive cleansers and exfoliating sponges. 5. Rinse thoroughly with tepid water. Hot water is harsh on skin, especially delicate face skin. 6. Apply a moisturizer containing alpha or beta hydroxy acids. These acids will continue the exfoliating process, because acids cause additional dead skin cells to slough off. 7. Try an exfoliating mask. Make one by mashing up a papaya and smearing it on your face. The enzymes help exfoliate the skin. Rinse off thoroughly after 15 minutes. Tips: Use products designed for the face only. Those meant for the rest of your body may be too abrasive and irritating for your face. Your skin may tingle after using alpha or beta hydroxy acids. This is normal and should go away after 15 minutes. Be diligent in keeping moisturizer on your face at all times if you exfoliate regularly. Exfoliating causes the skin to dry out, and dry skin is an invitation for skin to wrinkle. Warnings: Never overexfoliate with excessively abrasive exfoliating cleansers, or you run the risk of bursting the delicate blood vessels under the skin. If the vessels burst, your skin may appear permanently flushed. This condition, known as telangiectasia, must then be treated using laser surgery. I have oily skin, and my husband dry, and we both swear by it. To exfoliate, pour a little baking soda in the palm of your hand and mix with Cetaphil to make a paste. Scrub away. It will not be too abrasive for most skin types, and gentle enough for reactive ones, and inexpensive to boot! To make an oil-control mask, take some Milk of Magnesia, put it on a cotton ball or your fingers, and wipe onto your face. Let it dry. Rinse with tepid water. Soap Bubbles Soap Bubbles Because of the remaining surface tension, a soap film always pulls in as tightly as it can, justlike a stretched balloon. Glycerine makes the bubbles last longer than usual. Experiment: 1. Working in pairs, blow hemisphere-shaped bubbles in the palm of your hand and recordthe patterns the bubbles make on the data sheet. A. Dip your fingers into water and wet one of your palms so your hand can be a table foryour bubble to rest on. B. Dip the end of the straw into the cup of bubble solution. C. Hold the straw very close to your palm and blow gently. D. A bubble hemisphere should begin to form on your palm. E. You will be able to feel the air that you are blowing inside the bubble on the palm of yourhand. You increase the size of your bubble when you add air. Practice a few times. F. Working only in a single layer, draw diagrams of all the different arrangements of bubblesyou can find. Observe the arrangements you discover. 2. In a shallow container, using a straw and bubble solution, blow several large bubbles andmake a pyramid of bubbles. Draw diagram. 3. Use scissors, paper, and rubber bands to blow several bubbles. 4.
