It is safe enough to eat. I'd actually prefer it without the mint -- but it does the job without feeling greasy. It really moisturizers your lips, even if your lips are severly chapped. The company hires the handicapped and is very environmentally responsible. They support local charities and help in the community (donating products to homeless shelters). There are frequent stories in the local newspaper about their operation. If you like supporting a good company, this would be one. Was this review helpful to you? Reinhardt "olivia lee" (east coast)- See all my reviews While I like some things about this product there are some negatives to consider. First, there is no sunscreen which is a big issue for me. I very much prefer lip balms with a sunscreen but for someone sensitive to that ingredient not having one would be a huge plus. Second, I like the feel of the minty-ness. It isn't something that bothers my skin but the peppermint in it could be an irritant to some people. Perhaps, it doesnt bother me because I don't use this exclusively, I'm not sure, but I can see this being an issue for some people with sensitive skin. The texture is a mixed-bag for me. While it feels nice once it's on, I find it a bit *pulling* to get it on. I think that it melts a bit at body temp so once its on, it feels good. I find a bit *stiff* in the tube. I like the tube form as lip balms in a tin are a bit messy to get on and this is easy to carry with you. I haven't had any issues with the cap coming off in pocket or purse. It also doesn't look *feminine* in the tube or have a sweet flowery scent so my son will use it. Was this review helpful to you? Ouch! , January 26, 2006 Reviewer: Shannon Andrae (WV, USA)- See all my reviews I love the Lip Balm, but the Mind Body source wants $9.94 for shipping 5 small tubes of Lip Balm that cost .49 cents each? OUCH! I don't think so!! Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: Terrific Product, Very Invigorating , January 20, 2006 Reviewer: J. H. Sweet - See all my reviews I have used Cherry Chapstick for as long as I can remember, and I still love it, but I will now be periodically switching off with Beeswax Lip Balm. I didn't think anything could ever make me want to add variety to my Cherry Chapstick regimen, but I was wrong. Beeswax Lip Balm is minty and invigorating, and it feels nice. I have always loved beeswax candles. I now love this product as well. J.H. Sweet, author of The Fairy Chronicles, and Burt's Bees Enthusiast Was this review helpful to you? Szimanski (Michigan)- See all my reviews The vendor "The Mind Body Source" will kill the deal as they want an INSANE amount in shipping. I was going to order 10 of these and the shipping came to $15 for $5 of product. Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) Not very moisturizing , January 10, 2006 Reviewer: Justine "Justine" (Pennington, NJ USA)- See all my reviews I personally am not a big fan of Burt's Bees chapstick. It feels cool and everything, but it doesn't really do a good job in moisturing my lips. I would reccomend Chapstick or Softlips, and they are both cheaper than Burt's. skin creams are luxuriously

Satiny Skin Cream Printed from www.care2.com Satiny Skin Cream by Annie Berthold-Bond , Care2.com Producer, Green Living Channels Simple Solution Made with the rich oils of fruits, nuts, seeds, and vegetables, wax made by bees, and wildcrafted healing herbs, homemade skin creams are luxuriously fresh and nourishing. By adding a bit of a queen bee's royal jelly, your face cream can impart to your skin one of the great secrets of Mayan beauty. What a contrast with expensive, petroleum-based dead-in-a-bottle products without any healing benefit, found in department stores. The purpose of an emollient and moisturizing skin cream is to protect the skin from the elements, to hydrate, and replace oils that have been stripped away from cleansing. Beeswax provides a protective coating against wind and sun, and the emollient oils such as apricot kernel, almond, avocado, and Shea butter, hydrate and nourish. Some oils, such as sesame oil, are rich, natural sunscreens in their own right. This easy skin cream only takes 25 minutes to make! The Basic Moisturizing Skin Cream Formula 2 1/2 ounces blended oils (see "What are the Best Oils for Your Skin," below) 1 1/2 ounces coconut oil or cocoa butter 1/2 ounce beeswax 4 ounces distilled or purified water 1 teaspoon active royal jelly (optional; available in health food stores) 30 drops grapefruit seed extract (available in health food stores) Essential oils of choice (optional) Weigh the coconut oil and beeswax on a scale. Combine the oils and beeswax in a double boiler, and melt over a low heat, stirring occasionally. This step takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the melted oils and beeswax from the stove and add the water. Mix with an electric mixer until creamy and thick. Stir in the grapefruit seed extract and essential oils (if using). Store in glass jars with screw-on tops. Makes 8 ounces of cream. Note: This cream should last for 4 months or so, but if you see mold growing, discard. When you make kitchen cosmetics, cleanliness is really important so bacteria doesn't grow. Purified or distilled water is used in this recipe because bacteria has been filtered out. Preparation Time: 25 minutes What are the Best Oils for Your Skin? The only way to find the best oils for your skin is to go to a healthfood store and buy a variety and see how they feel. Yourskin will "tell" you when you have found the best ones for you. Joinwith some friends for this experiment, and share the cost. Here are some suggested oils to try: almond oil; apricot kernel oil (great for sensitive and older skin); avocado oil (one of the most moisturizing oils and good for older skin); cocoa butter (protective and water repellent); grapeseed oil (a dry oil, good so the cream isn't too greasy); jojoba (actually a liquid wax and good to use so the cream isn't too greasy); peanut oil (good for all skin types); sesame oil (natural sunscreen); Shea butter (natural sunscreen); and wheat germ oil (high in vitamins and minerals). An increasing number of natural plant-based moisturizing creams are on the market. Check at health food stores for products from our advertisers Kiss My Face and Aubrey Organics, among others. Bady Care

Scarification: My favorite form of bady art Scarification: My favorite form of bady art At A Glance Author Outsider Contact jackhell@hotmail.com Artist Myself Studio Kitchen Location Ashland, Oregon Scarification: I started out doing scarification on myself doing stylizedRunes on my arm and my stomach and my calves. It took some experimenting tofind a depth that wasn't too deep or too shallow. I found that a 1/8-inch isthe best depth and began marking the scalpel to help guide it until I becamecomfortable with the cutting. The Second problem I came across is that Ihave fair skin and don't scar heavily due to the small amount of keloids. Tomake up for that I researched scarification practices and found that ash is agood way to agitate the skin into a scar, I use sage ash. I suppose getting atan would probably also work. And yet a third problem, I found out thelame way that if you have 2 cuts too close together then the scars might mergeand ruin the piece, which I managed to "fix" by cutting off the skin where Ididn't want it to be and applying Neosporin. Let me get startedexplaining the scar on my stomach. Its of the rune Teiwaz which is asymbol of warrior. It is about three years old, and has only had a fewproblems. It was also the third scar I did on myself. The process I used tokeep it sterile was to first get a brand new scalpel (that can be a painsometimes), I than proceeded to sterilize it by boiling the blade for justover an hour because I don't have an autoclave. Then used rubbing alcohol tosterilize the skin in the area I planned to do the scar and let it dry (thatalso tightens the skin a bit, which makes the cutting easier). I alsoremembered the latex gloves and went through about three pairs during thesterilization process (I wanted to stay away from cross contamination). I hada hard time cutting deep enough at first, I think that comes from theself-preservation instinct, so I had to go over the scar again to cut it deepenough to leave a good scar. I also recommend having something on hand to swabthe blood; I used a paper towel, which probably undid my attempts atsterilization. I had about a 1/4 pound of sage ash that I had been saving forawhile for scars and rubbed it into the cuts, I used up a good portion of theash (mostly on the surrounding skin) and was left with a black scabafterwards. Most of the ash came out due to bleeding and picking the scab afew times a day to irritate the cut into a thick scar. I'd say it was boutthree weeks before I considered it healed although I still took care of itjust to keep on the safe side After I became comfortable with theprocess and felt I was competent, through a combination of practicing onmyself and on leather, I started doing work for friends who thought I wasdoing a good job. The one problem they had was remembering to pick the scabs.I ended up doing some intricate Celtic knots and some Japanese symbols withpretty good results. The first scar I ever did on anyone else was aCeltic cross that took up a decent area on the back. I used the samesterilization process again except I had access to an autoclave this time so Iautoclaved instead of boiled. The person who got the cuts drew the design ofthe Celtic knot. It took up a lot of space on the back and was filled withvarious other designs; I suppose maybe it was more of a frame for everythingthat was inside. I used freshly cleaned terry cloths to swab the blood until Iwas done and used a towel and got a nice design on the towel from it. Thesubject had a mixture of marijuana ash and sage ash to rub in. Apparently someTHC was left in the ash and leeched into the blood because the subject claimedto have gotten high, I think that it more likely endorphins, because I had asimilar experience. That scar turned out pretty decent I'm thinking it wasbecause the person had a decent tan. I'm glad I had learned from my previousexperience with the scars merging so I had remembered to cut shallower in someplaces where the detail was high. And in the end I think it was probably thebest piece I had ever done. I still do scarification on myself andperform the art on others. Scarification almost landed me a job but thebusiness went under before I was hired. The Scarification got me interested inbranding and body piercing neither of which I am comfortable doing onothers. As a last note I would recommend that a better environment beused than a kitchen. Return to Scarification experiences

Retinal Cream

DJO | Digital Journal of Ophthalmology A 79 year old man with visual changes Burton Goldstein, M.D. William Mcdowell, M.D. University of South Florida History A 79-year-old male presented with a complaint of decreased visual acuity in his left eye for the past 4 days. He also described a dirty cobweb in the left eye that was immobile. He denied flashes, scotomata, and curtains. The visual acuity OD had been count fingers for the previous 10 years secondary to a presumed branch retinal vein occlusion. He had a history of mild cataracts OU. He was diabetic but there was no history of diabetic retinopathy or other ocular disease. The patient had originally reported to his primary care physician one week earlier with complaints of increased fatigue, short-term memory loss, lower extremity weakness, and headache. He had been hunting in the Florida panhandle one week prior to the onset of his symptoms and sustained numerous mosquito bites. Examination Best-corrected visual acuity was count fingers OD, 20/40 OS. There was a RAPD on the right. IOP was 16 OU. The anterior segment was quiet OU. Bilateral posterior vitreous detachments were present, no vitreous cells. Discs were sharp and flat. Retinal vessels were wnl with no vasculitis. Maculae were dry and the periphery was attached with the following appearance. (see photos) Figure 1. Figure 2. Figure 3. Figure 4. Ancillary Testing Radiographic Studies A Humphrey 24-2 visual field OS showed nonspecific defects. The patient was hospitalized and a thorough workup was initiated. CT of the head revealed no masses or acute intracranial process. A lumbar puncture was performed. The opening pressure was normal. CSF demonstrated an elevated total protein and white blood cell count; gram stain and culture were negative. Serum titers of IgG and IgM for West Nile virus were positive Treatment The patient is currently being observed without treatment. Vision has improved to 20/30 OS and the posterior segment remained stable at both the one and three-month follow up. He continues to suffer from short-term memory loss but is improving. Differential Diagnosis The differential diagnosis of similar chorioretinal lesions includes primary ocular histoplasmosis syndrome, birdshot chorioretinopathy, multiple evanescent white dot syndrome, punctate inner choroidopathy, sarcoidosis, syphilis, lyme disease, miliary tuberculosis, intraocular lymphoma, herpes virus infection, inflammatory bowel disease and outer retinal toxoplasmosis. Diagnosis The patient was diagnosed with West Nile encephalitis. The organism responsible, the West Nile virus, is a flavivirus found in humans, birds and other vertebrates. Human cases of West Nile Virus infection in the United States for 2003 totaled 9,862 (1). The virus in now established in the western hemisphere and requires consideration in the differential diagnosis of choroiditis. Infection is usually asymptomatic but in approximately 20% of the people infected, symptoms can develop including fever, headache, fatigue, myalgias, and occasionally a skin rash on the trunk of the body. Severe infection can cause a meningitis or encephalitis picture. (2) Ocular symptoms usually begin shortly after systemic symptoms. Vision usually returns to baseline within weeks. There is no known effective treatment for systemic or ocular disease. While the infectious etiology had been identified prior to this patients presentation, it is likely many patients go undiagnosed. West Nile associated choroiditis is a potential complication of viral infection that can aid in the recognition of this condition. The ophthalmic findings in this case were consistent with several previously described cases of West Nile choroiditis. (3-7). Similar bilateral, chorioretinal, variable-sized lesions have been described in several of these reports. Findings of bilateral targetoid lesions (i.e.: hyperpigmentation surrounded by hypopigmentation) and linear hypopigmented streaks appear to be characteristic. Circular lesions range from 300-1000 microns in size and can slowly enlarge. The streak chorioretinal lesions range from 200-1500 microns in size and begin cream colored and become hypopigmented. (8) Targetoid lesions appear to be the resolving stage of initially cream-colored circular lesions, which will eventually atrophy. Other case reports have described additional signs of West Nile ocular involvement include conjunctival hyperemia, non-granulomatous keratic precipitates, anterior chamber reaction, and occlusive retinal vasculitis, which were not found in this patient. There was no overlying retinitis, vasculitis or neurosensory detachment. It has been reported that elderly and diabetic patients are more prone to the neurologic sequelae of West Nile virus infections. (9) This patient presented with a documented case of West Nile virus infection that made the diagnosis of coincident West Nile virus choroiditis evident. However, it demonstrates the need to include such infection in the differential diagnosis of choroiditis References 1.Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases.
