Fake tanning products include an active chemical called dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that works by staining the skin on a temporary basis. If you're applying fake tan yourself, remember to follow the instructions carefully and try to achieve an even look. Thankfully, many products are easy to use and don't make you look orange or streaky by the end. A fake tan offers little protection from the harmful effects of the sun, even if it has an in-built sunscreen. In order to protect yourself fully, you'll still need to take care in the sun and remember to apply sunscreen frequently. If you're desperate to have tanned skin, the safest way is to use fake tanning products. There are a variety of fake tan lotions available these days, but how do they work and are there any pitfalls to be aware of? Fake tans and how they work Fake tanning products do just what their name suggests - they offer a way of producing a tan without the need to risk your health through sunbathing or using sunbeds. There are various products on the market, but the key to all fake tans is a chemical called dihydroxyacetone (DHA). It's this chemical that's the active ingredient and temporarily stains the skin to produce a tanned look. The effect isn't usually immediate and can take from a couple of hours to a whole day to become fully prominent. Once the skin is tanned, the colour usually lasts for five to seven days before fading, but if you want a continuous tan, it can be re-applied to retain the effect. Using fake tan When it comes to using fake tanning lotions, there are plenty of options to choose from. The good news is that many are far superior to the products on offer in previous decades and, if applied correctly, avoid turning you orange or streaky! In fact, many produce a realistic and natural-looking tan. You can either purchase a lotion or spray to use yourself, or have a fake tan applied at a salon by a professional or in a tanning booth (where it is sprayed directly onto the body). Before applying a fake tan yourself, it's a good idea to: remove any makeup remove any dead skin (exfoliate) remove any unwanted hair (fake tan can stain hair and make it seem darker) moisturise your skin and wait for it to be absorbed Then apply the fake tan according to the manufacturer's instructions, aiming to get an even coverage all over. Depending on the product, you'll need to wait before dressing in order to avoid accidentally staining your clothes. If you have sensitive skin, it's worth checking the ingredients lists of products before you use them, as some include chemicals and alcohol to help speed up the drying process, but these can be a bit abrasive for sensitive skin. Why not test the product on a small patch of skin before applying it to your whole body and suffering an unpleasant side-effect? The dangers of fake tan One of the biggest pitfalls of using fake tan is the assumption that it will protect you from damage from the sun, says Cancer Research UK. In fact, a fake tan does not offer sufficient protection, even if they're marked as containing sunscreen. You will need to protect yourself from the sun in the same way as any other person. "Fake tanning products do not provide satisfactory sun protection, even if they contain sunscreen. This protection will only last up to two hours immediately after application of your tan, like a normal sunscreen product," explained a spokesperson for the Australian Sun Smart. "In most cases, women relying on the sunscreen that comes with their fake tan will suffer sunburn, as they do not apply enough to ensure adequate protection." Action points Before you use a fake tan product, test it on a patch of skin first to ensure that it's safe for your skin. If it produces any itching, or makes your skin feel uncomfortable or sore, don't use it and instead try a product designed for sensitive skin types. When putting on a fake tan, first prepare the skin by removing any makeup, dead skin and unwanted hair, and then moisturise before applying the tanning lotion. Don't forget that a fake tan will not protect you from the sun. You'll need to continue applying a sunscreen of factor 15 or more and take other sun protection methods when you're going out and about in the sun. In order to go out safely in the sun, you should apply a screenscreen of factor 15 or more 15-30 minutes before going outside. It will work fine over a fake tan and won't affect the fake tan at all. The UK Department of Health's Sun Safe campaign recommends putting it on generously and applying it to all areas of skin that are exposed, including the easily forgettable areas, such as the neck, back of the hands, feet and ears. It's also important to try and opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen, as these block both UVA and UVB rays. You should also take other sun protection measures, such as making use of shady areas wherever possible and wearing loose clothing, a hat and sunglasses. Summary Fake tanning products offer the ideal way of gaining a sun-kissed look without harming yourself in the process. They're easily accessible, there are plenty of options on offer for all types of skin and most are relatively easy to apply. But a fake tan does not provide protection from the sun and you will still need to take sun protection measures when going out in the sun. It isn't something that bothers my skin but the peppermint in it could be an irritant to some people. Perhaps, it doesnt bother me because I don't use this exclusively, I'm not sure, but I can see this being an issue for some people with sensitive skin. The texture is a mixed-bag for me. While it feels nice once it's on, I find it a bit *pulling* to get it on. I think that it melts a bit at body temp so once its on, it feels good. I find a bit *stiff* in the tube. I like the tube form as lip balms in a tin are a bit messy to get on and this is easy to carry with you. I haven't had any issues with the cap coming off in pocket or purse. For example, lymphatic drainage massage can assist in reducing fluid retention and cellulite; aromatherapy massage can alleviate stress and assist in rebalancing the skin, depending on which essential oils are used. At home Clearly, you won't have a professional massage therapist at home, but there is nothing stopping you from enlisting a friend or partner to spoil you with heavenly massage oil. If alone, simply take some time to massage the oil into your skin, and relax for the evening. You will still reap the rewards. Manicures and pedicures At a salon Manicures and pedicures smooth and soften skin, eliminate ingrown nails or hangnails around the bed of the fingernail. The essential oil combination, along with the neroli hydrosol and virgin coconut oil give this a tropical aroma. But even if you just use distilled water instead of hydrosol and leave out the essential oils, it feels so fantastic on your skin, you'll make it again and again!! Blending Procedure: Combine the shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, stearic acid and emulsifying wax in a large heat proof (I use Pyrex) glass measuring cup with a pour spout. Place the mixture in a hot water bath until the waxes are completely melted. Remove from heat. In a separate Pyrex cup, combine the hydrosol and glycerin. Place the mixture in a hot water bath for about 10 minutes to warm, then stir until the glycerin dissolves completely. Remove from heat. Stir the oils/waxes together to make sure they are evenly combined. In the separate container, stir the water ingredients to make sure they are evenly combined. Begin stirring the oil/wax mixture with an electric mixer on medium speed and add the water mixture as you stir. You will see the mixture begin to thicken as you blend it. Continue mixing until until Whipped Body Cream is thick and rich. I have found that blending for anything less than 10 minutes or so does not allow enough time for this mixture to become stable. Mixing for less time than this could resulting separation. Pour into clean jars. If a jar, I like to use a cosmetic spatula to dispense this so I don't add bacteria from your hands to the product. If you want, you can add whatever preservative you prefer to extend shelf life. You can add the preservative of your choice to the cream by following the preservative manufacturer's instructions for use. (For more information about preservatives, visit our FAQ page.) If you do not use a preservative, your cream should last up to 2 weeks if you have used fresh ingredients and if you dispense it with a clean utensil (like a cosmetic spatula) and store it in a cool, dry place.
