Beta. Acids, vitamins and derivatives. All these words sound more like stuff in a science experiment than lotions or creams for your skin. But never fear: This simple guide will help you understand the latest ingredients in skin care products that may benefit your skin. Use this information to sort through various skin care products on the market. If you're still unsure which skin care products are right for you, ask your dermatologist or consult with a skin esthetician at your local salon or beauty counter. Alpha-hydroxy Acids (AHAs) Over-the-counter skin care products containing alpha-hydroxy acids (glycolic, lactic, tartaric and citric acids) have become increasingly popular over the last five years. In the U.S. alone, there are over 200 manufacturers of skin care products containing alpha-hydroxy acids. Creams and lotions with alpha-hydroxy acids may help with fine lines, irregular pigmentation and age spots, and may help decrease enlarged pores. Side effects of alpha-hydroxy acids include mild irritation and sun sensitivity. For that reason, sunscreen also should be used every morning. To help avoid skin irritation with alpha-hydroxy acids, it is advisable to start with a product with concentrations of AHA (10-15 percent) Also, make sure you ease into it. You want to get your skin used to alpha-hydroxy acids, so you should only initially apply the skin care product every other day, gradually working up to daily application. Beta-hydroxy Acid (Salicylic Acid) Salicylic acid also has been studied for its effect on skin that has aged prematurely due to exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun. It exfoliates skin, and can improve the texture and color of the skin. It penetrates oil-laden hair follicle openings and, as a result, also helps with acne . There are many skin care products available that contain salicylic acid. Some are available over-the-counter and others require a doctor's prescription. Studies have shown that salicylic acid is less irritating than skin care products containing alpha-hydroxy acids, while providing similar improvement in skin texture and color. Hydroquinone Skin care products containing hydroquinone are popularly referred to as bleaching creams or lightening agents. These skin care products are used to lighten hyperpigmentation , such as age spots and dark spots related to pregnancy or hormone therapy ( melasma or chloasma). Some over-the-counter skin care products contain hydroquinone, but your doctor can also prescribe a solution with a higher concentration of hydroquinone if your skin doesn't respond to over- the-counter treatments. If you are allergic to hydroquinones, you can use products containing kojic acid instead. Kojic Acid Kojic acid is a more recent remedy for the treatment of pigment problems and age spots. Discovered in 1989, kojic acid has a similar effect as hydroquinone. Kojic acid is derived from a fungus , and studies have shown that it is effective as a lightening agent, inhibiting production of melanin (brown pigment). Retinol This is a derivative of vitamin A , and you will see that a lot of skin care products contain retinol. Retinol's stronger counterpart is tretinoin, which is the active ingredient in Retin-A and Renova. If your skin is too sensitive to use Retin-A, retinol is an excellent alternative. Here's why skin responds to skin care products with retinol: vitamin A has a molecular structure that's tiny enough to get into the lower layers of skin, where it finds collagen and elastin . Retinol is proven to improve mottled pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles , skin texture, skin tone and color, and your skin's hydration levels. You may also hear about retinyl palmitate . This falls into the same family as retinol, but if the skin care product you choose contains retinyl palmitate, you will need to use more of this product than one that contains retinol to get the same effect. L-Ascorbic Acid This is the only form of vitamin C that you should look for in your skin care products. There are many skin care products on the market today that boast vitamin C derivatives as an ingredient (magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or ascorbyl palmitate, for example), but L-ascorbic acid is the only useful form of vitamin C in skin care products. Vitamin C is the only antioxidant that is proven to stimulate the synthesis of collagen as well, which is essential since your body's natural collagen production decreases as you age. Sun exposure will also accelerate the decrease in collagen. Studies have shown that vitamin C helps to minimize fine lines, scars, and wrinkles. 1 2 | Next Printer-Friendly Format | Email to a Friend Last Editorial Review: 1/31/2005 6:16:09 AM Visit The Skin Home Page Allergies Alzheimer's Arthritis Asthma BloodPressure Cancer Cholesterol Chronic Pain Cold & Flu Crohn'sDisease Depression Diabetes Dictionary Digestion Eyesight Feet &Fitness First Aid Healthy Kids HealthyLiving Hearing & Ear Heart Hepatitis C HIV/AIDS Liver Lung Cond. Col. Jeffrey Bady, USA Special to American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON, June 3, 2003 - "Supporting Our Troops in Afghanistan" has developed into more than a service-learning project for a group of middle-schoolers in Maryland. Students at Westland Middle School in Bethesda, Md., started off with the theme and a project to create care packages for U.S. service members in Afghanistan. But it grew from there: They linked up with real-world troops to give added realism to their project. School principal Ursula Hermann suggested having service members talk to the students about their experiences while serving in Afghanistan. Someone contacted the 249th Engineer Battalion from Fort Belvoir, Va., a unit that has recently returned from Afghanistan. Maj. Steven Cade, executive officer, expressed an interest in taking part in the students' learning process. On May 22, 2003, Cade brought not only a multimedia presentation, but also four unit members with him: Chief Warrant Officer Jason Carlo, Sgt. 1st Class Kevin McCrea, Staff Sgt. Nicholas Mapp and Spc. Martin Brown. Together, they briefed students on the culture, customs and uniqueness of Afghanistan. Then the soldiers displayed some equipment they used while in Afghanistan. School staff members said the students were excited about meeting soldiers with real life experiences. Students' questions were mostly about the climate, Afghan children's activities and the lifestyle of the Afghan people. After the presentation, the students constructed the care packages, containing baby wipes, disposable razors and cameras, candy, computer game software, and other personal items. The 249th Engineer Battalion provides utility power wherever needed around the globe. They have deployed to the Middle East, Asia, Africa and South America. They also support the Federal Emergency Management Agency during disaster relief efforts. The unit has the capability to supply enough power for a small city. (Lt. Col. Search Customer Reviews 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful: Overall, a good upgrade , March 28, 2005 Reviewer: Dr Beth T Cholette "doctor_beth" (Upstate NY USA)- See all my reviews I recently updated from my very old Schick Silk Effects razor to their newest product, Schick Intuition, and overall, I have been pleased with the upgrade. At first, I was a bit skeptical about their claim that no shaving cream/gel would be necessary, especially since my skin tends to nick easily. However, once I wet the razor and began to shave my legs, I was completely amazed: the Intuition razor glided smoothly and evenly over my skin, no shaving gel needed! I could even shave potential trouble spots, such as my knees and outer ankles, with complete ease and totally nick-free. Although the razor is fairly large, it is so light and fits into the hand so nicely that it is very easy to use; it also comes with a nice suction cup hanger to affix to your shower wall. Finally, as an added bonus, after using the Intuition razor for just a few days, I noticed that my hair seemed to be growing back in more slowing, requiring me to simply touch up my legs rather than give them a full shave, which is a real time-saver. Unfortunately, this razor is not without some problems, many of which other reviewers have mentioned. First of all, the large size of the razor made it hard to maneuver around my bikini line area, and I also found that I did get quite a few nicks in this area. I've been unable to figure out exactly why this is--perhaps it has to do with upgrading from a double blade to a triple blade (and it definitely IS a triple blade, not a double as a previous reviewer suggested)?--but I've found that using just a bit of shaving gel in this area only was helpful. Secondly, the great coating around the blade does wear unevenly, with the bottom section getting used up much more quickly than the top. I found that the coating was at its best for about three weeks, could be used adequately for another week or two, but then required switching to a new cartridge, meaning that the coating wears out well before the razor itself does. Also, the replacement cartridges are fairly expensive--a pack of three costs about the same as I paid for a pack of six Silk Effects refills. A final issue is that this razor can ONLY be used in the shower, as both your legs and the razor itself must be wet in order for it to work effectively. Despite the above flaws, I have been pleased with the performance of this razor, and I think that the money I paid to upgrade was worth it. I would recommend this product with some reservations. Great concept, so-so execution , August 22, 2005 Reviewer: Morgan's Mom - See all my reviews After years of cutting my legs with dollar-store razors, I finally decided to treat myself to a decent razor. I picked the Intuition because I really liked the idea of having the soap and shaver in one. The main "pro" of this razor is that, in my opinion, it gives a good, close shave. I haven't had any of the problems with it not shaving closely enough that other reviewers have mentioned; maybe it's just a matter of personal preference. I also like that it glides along the leg very smoothly. I've nicked myself occasionally at the ankle and knee, though - go carefully in those spots. It's convenient to be able to hang the razor right in the shower from the suction-cup hook. Since I only shave in the shower, it doesn't bother me that both your legs and the razor need to be wet for it to work. Now for the cons. The soap wears down very quickly. I've even had one soap bar pop off the razor completely after only a couple of uses, and there was no way to reattach it - there went one very expensive refill! And yes, the refills are EXPENSIVE! Way overpriced, if you ask me, especially since they don't last very long. I find that the average refill lasts in good condition (with soap on the sharp side of the blades) for maybe 6 uses; after that, the only soap is left on the dull side of the blades, where it doesn't do any good (what genius is responsible for that bit of designing??). I usually use the razor anyway until all the soap is gone - maybe a dozen shaves total, only half of which are as they should be. Poor value for the money there. I'll keep using the Intuition for now; however, when I run out of refills next time I might just go back to a plain ol' razor and shave gel. This product deserves an honest 2.5 stars - it's a great idea that's been hamstrung by a poor finished design and overexuberant pricing. Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) Inconvinient! , July 21, 2005 Reviewer: A. Heeren "Acalya Heeren" (Norfolk, VA)- See all my reviews As soon as I used it I noticed that this is the worst razor I've ever used. It is not good for the curves on your legs, armpits or bikini area etc. because of the soap head which stands there clumsily. Plus, because of the soap head, you can't shave as close as you want. I didn't like it at all, waste of money and time. The first thing next day was to go to market again and to buy a new razor.(nowadays I adore Wilkinson Quattro for women) Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) Marginally worse than the song! , June 9, 2005 Reviewer: Jacqueline Hahn "teech 'n song" (Southern Maryland, USA)- See all my reviews This is probably the most ill-conceived product out there. First of all, as it has been pointed out in another review, this is a VERY poor quality razor. Without it's soaper, it's a dollar store item. Secondly, the soaper goes all the way around the blade. I don't know about you but I generally shave using the sharp edge of the blade only ... so, after the soap wears out on the leading edge [in about 3 legs-worth of shaving!], it is necessary to give a swipe of the razor in the opposite direction before actually shaving, in order to get any soaping action. This seemed to double my shaving time rather than shorten it. I wish I could express more effectively just how much I hate this product. I also wish I could get that darn song out of my head ... I mean, come on Jewel, it sounded like a jingle the first time I heard it! Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) Horrible idea.... , April 10, 2005 Reviewer: Christine Kottemann (Evansville, IN)- See all my reviews As a college student, I was really excited about this at first. I thought, WOW, I don't need to spend extra money on shaving cream/gel and it would be a quick shave. However, my excitement over this razor quickly diminished. The moisturizor around the blades wore down unevenly leaving a need to actually use gel/cream. Also, the shave itself is not very close. I am just overall disappointed with this porduct and went back to my Venus razor as soon as I used up the Intuition blades. Was this review helpful to you?
