However, repeated stimuli can compromise the skins ability to act as a barrier, leading to what many would term sensitive skin. The common perception of sensitive skin is that it is skin that is easily irritated. Although not clearly defined medically, sensitive skin tends to become more irritated or react more (e.g. redness, itching) than normal skin. For some people, their skin always seems sensitive. Whilst for others, the amount of sensitivity will vary. If you believe you have sensitive skin, some of the things that can trigger a reaction include: sudden emotional / psychological stress exposure to common irritants at home or at work (e.g. nickel, insecticides, perfumes) a new pet at home drying effects of cold air, wind or the sun certain flowers and plants (e.g. chrysanthemums, pine trees, geraniums) pollen and mould spores wearing wool next to the skin Below is a checklist prepared by toxicologist Dr. John Lister, of possible causes to consider if you suddenly develop sensitive skin. As there are so many potential causes, it may help to go through this list with your GP or Practice Nurse to help try and identify what may be causing the sensitivity. Potential causes of sensitive skin Sensitive skin can be caused by any number of reasons. The most common things that may cause sensitive skin are listed below. Sudden stress in life is often overlooked and can be a potential trigger for sensitive skin, even promoting a bout of eczema in some people. Exposing the skin to common allergens or irritants such as nickel (in coins and jewellery), chemicals such as insecticides and pesticides in the home and garden, fragrances and preservatives in beauty products, wood resin or rubber among many other things. A change in the weather and climate. Dry winter weather and even over-exposure to the drying effects of the sun can lead to loss of skin moisture, making the skin dry and so more prone to reactions to certain substances. A new pet in the house, or an animal that is shedding more hair than usual. Pet hair and skin scales can be a problem for many people who have sensitive skin. Have you changed your favourite brand of soap, shampoo, bath foam, washing powder, skin cream or lotion? A new ingredient may be irritating the skin. Some foods can trigger an allergic reaction, which sometimes results in rashes. Among the most common, although only in a small number of people, are eggs, shell-fish, strawberries, nuts, nut oils and milk products. Sometimes new woollen clothing, especially coarser wool, can irritate the skin, leading to sensitivity. Breathing in pollen, especially from grass and trees, can not only result in an asthma attack, but also skin rashes in some people. Similarly moulds in a damp and musty room can release millions of spores that can make the skin sensitive, itchy and irritated. New medications whether taken by mouth or applied to the skin can trigger sensitivity and rashes in some people. Many flowers and plants in the garden, such as chrysanthemums, figs, geraniums, pine needles and others that can irritate sensitive skin.
