Do you know your skin type? Normal: It is ideal to strive for normal skin. Normal skin is well balanced: not too dry or too oily and blemishes are uncommon. Pores are small to medium sized and skin has an even tone. Wash skin twice daily and use a good moisturizer. Dry: This type of skin is sensitive to cold, and can feel tight or have visible flaking -- especially after cleansing. Dry skin has a matte finish, small pores, and tends to become drier and more wrinkled with age compared with other skin types. Washing skin once a day may be enough to get rid of oil and dirt. People with dry skin should use hydrating soaps and cleansers and a good moisturizer to seal in moisture. Drinking plenty of water is also a good idea. Oily: If you have a shiny appearance with large pores, you may have oily skin. People with oily skin have a hard time with acne because their skin overproduces oil that makes it more prone to clogged pores. The good news? People with oily skin are less likely to develop wrinkles as early as people with other skin types. Proper cleansing twice a day is important (though some people with excessively oily skin should do it more often). Look for products made for acne-prone skin that contain benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, or salicylic acid as the active ingredient. Combination: This skin type refers to people who have both dry or normal and oily spots on their face. Typically, the "T-zone" (forehead, nose, and chin) is oily and the cheeks and around the eyes are normal or dry. Wash skin twice daily and use a lighter moisturizer. Use sparingly, if at all, on oily spots. ^ Back to Top Do you still get acne as an adult? You may think to yourself, "Isn't acne supposed to disappear with adolescence?" Ideally yes, but sometimes acne never leaves. Or it rears its ugly head later in adulthood. Plenty of people suffer from adult-onset acne. There are many myths about what causes acne, from diet to stress to bad hygiene. But fluctuating hormones that occur as we age are usually behind adult acne. Pregnancy, for example, can make adult acne better or worse. The same is true of birth control pills. Sometimes lifestyle habits can cause adult acne or make it worse. It's best not to leave oil or dirt on your face, so cleansing at least twice a day is important, sometimes more if you engage in physical activity or have excessively oily skin. Some other tips: Avoid resting your hands or other objects, such as a telephone receiver, on your face. Doing so can leave unwanted dirt and oil behind. Avoid irritants, such as oily cosmetics, sunscreens, and hair-styling products. Avoid picking or squeezing at pimples. This can lead to infection or scarring. Use products containing benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, or salicylic acid as the active ingredient. These over-the-counter products dry excess oil and promote peeling. There are various treatments for different types of acne. Just about every case of acne can be cleared up with the products on the market today. If you have persistent acne, check with a dermatologist to find a treatment plan best for you. ^ Back to Top Do you get red or blotchy skin? If you get red or blotchy skin, you may have sensitive skin. People with sensitive skin need to be particularly careful. If you have this skin type, you should avoid products containing perfumes or dyes and strong soaps -- all can be irritants. Instead, opt for mild or hypoallergenic products and those that are "free" of these irritating agents. Also try gently using your fingers to cleanse your face instead of washcloths, which can be abrasive on the skin. ^ Back to Top Is your skin excessively dry? Many things can cause dry skin. Some people have seasonally dry skin that occurs primarily during cold, dry winter months. Sometimes it's hereditary and occurs year-round. Either way, make sure your body is hydrated by drinking more water. Lather on heavy moisturizers when your skin starts to feel dry, and take shorter, cooler baths and showers. Pat dry when finished bathing and use lotion right away to lock in moisture on your skin. In addition, using a humidifier in your home can give dry skin, hair, and nails an additional charge. Dry skin is also linked to the natural aging process. With age, we lose underlying support from fat padding and connective tissues. This makes the skin less elastic -- and as a result drier and droopier. Each morning, use a good moisturizer with a sunscreen of at least 15 SPF. If you still frequently have dry, flaky skin that may crack, this could indicate a more complex skin condition. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends seeing a dermatologist for further evaluation. ^ Back to Top Have fine lines, spots, or freckles appeared on your face or gotten worse with age? Fine lines, freckling, and age spots all come from one primary source: the sun. The visible effects of aging on our skin begin in our 20s. While you can't stop aging, you can take action to keep yourself looking as young as possible. Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF rating of 15 or higher every day. Also wear hats to guard against sun damage. This applies for people with all skin complexions, though fairer-skinned people need to be even more cautious. Tanning salons are also a no-no. And don't smoke. Sun exposure is also a major risk for skin cancers. The solid stick of lotion (it feels more like a light massage oil than a lotion when on) absorbs quickly and goes on like using a deodorant stick on your hands. The scent of the Hamptons Hideaway is terrific--sea breeze mixed with florals that zing with a pleasant and refreshing wave, yet doesn't compete with any other scent you may be wearing. The product is great for work too--you don't have to wait long for it to absorb before resuming work. My main complaint with this product is the packaging. The "stick" of lotion works not unlike a twist up/push up deodorant stick pillar. After using the product for two weeks without any problems, the pillar of lotion popped out and onto my lap, leaving an oily smear on my clothes. This stain required several spot cleaning attempts to remove. This experience is the equivalent of the "messy lotion spill" this product claims to avoid. After the pillar popped out, I've had to hold it in place each time I want to use it--this is hard to do when you're trying to apply lotion to one of your hands! Despite the irritation and inconvinience of the packaging mishap, this product is really nice--the smell, the texture and the long-lasting effects on my hands is very nice.
