BOTOX > Consumer Connection > Approved Uses > Hyperhidrosis home | find | contact | help Hyperhidrosis" BOTOX is indicated for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (severe underarm sweating) that is inadequately managed with topical agents. Severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, or severe underarm sweating, is a medical condition that involves hyperactive sweat glands. Sweat is your body's temperature regulator. In severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, sweating significantly exceeds the body's normal requirements. Severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis often goes undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, and untreated due to lack of awareness. Only a medical professional can diagnose severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (severe underarm sweating) that is not being effectively managed with topical agents. Be prepared to tell your doctor about your medical history, family history, and when you first noticed your severe underarm sweating. You may be asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding the extent to which severe underarm sweating affects your daily activities. This is known as the Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS). Once a diagnosis has been made, your doctor will discuss the appropriate treatment options with you. BOTOX treatment is very effective. One clinical study involved 322 patients with severe underarm sweating. Responders were defined as patients who showed greater than or equal to 2-grade HDSS improvement from baseline value 4 weeks after both of the first 2 treatment sessions or had a sustained response after treatment 1 and did not receive re-treatment during the study. 57 out of 104 BOTOX treated patients (55%) achieved an effective response compared to only 6 out of 108 treated without BOTOX (6%) 84 out of 104 BOTOX treated patients (81%) achieved a greater than 50% reduction in sweatingcompared to only 44 out of 108 treated without BOTOX (41%) BOTOX treatment helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. In a recent clinical study, the median duration of response in BOTOX patients was 201 days or 6.7 months (e.g. 1/2 of the patients had a treatment duration of at least 201 days or 6.7 months). BOTOX is not a cure; your symptoms will return gradually, and you will know when the time is right for another treatment. Your healthcare provider will recommend a treatment strategy to ensure that you receive the best possible results with BOTOX treatment. BOTOX injections can be performed in your doctor's office. The most frequently reported side effects (3% to 10% of patients) following BOTOX injection were injection-site pain and bleeding, non-underarm sweating, infection, inflammation of the throat, flu syndrome, headache, fever, neck or back pain, itching, and anxiety.
