The FDA today approved Aldara cream (5%), a topical prescription cream for treating precancerous skin lesions that frequently occur on the face and scalp of normal health adults. The rough, red, scaly patches or crust on the skin known as actinic keratosis is caused by prolonged sun exposure and affect about 10 million Americans each year. AK lesions usually measure less than 1/4 inch in diameter and more than 80% of lesions occur on the upper limbs, head, and neck. Fair skin individuals with light hair and light-colored eyes are at greatest risk for AK. Because AK is caused by cumulative sun exposure, it takes years to develop. The condition usually appears first in older people, although it has been reported in people in their 40s. According to the cream's manufacturer, 3M Co., Aldara is the first immune response modifier to be approved to treat actinic keratosis. The cream works by stimulating the body's own immune system to fight off skin cancer. Aldara Helps Prevent Skin Cancer The FDA's approval of Aldara was based on a clinical trial involving 436 people with multiple actinic keratosis skin lesions. Half of them were treated with Aldara and half received a placebo twice a week for 16 weeks. The study showed that the lesions completely cleared up in nearly half of the people treated with Aldara compared with only 3% of those on the placebo. In addition, the majority of those who used Aldara experienced a clearing of at least 75% or more. The most commonly reported side effects included local skin adverse skin reactions, such as flaking, scaling, dryness, scabbing, swelling, and itching or burning at the application site. Other available treatments for actinic keratosis include freezing the lesion, surgically removing them, burning them off, laser treatment, topical chemotherapy, and photodynamic therapy. The company says the FDA is also considering another application for Aldara in treating superficial basal cell carcinoma, a common form of nonmelanoma skin cancer. Follow these easy steps to get great skin in no time! Steps Got pimples? The best thing you can do is wash, tone and moisturise twice a day, everyday. Use either teatree oil or a topical pimple cream on any huge pimples. Don't smother your whole head in it though, just a dot here and there is enough. Use a gentle cream to get rid of any pimple and help preventing n ones to form. Nubian heritage does great stuff. Not easy to find in shops, but search with google for a bit of online retail therapy. If you don't have enough cash to fork out for a professional facial, D.I.Y! Search wikihow for 'How to give a facial.' Don't use cheap make-up on your face. Pick a foundation that doesn't clog your pores, even if it is a bit more expensive. Cheap make-up is also hard to match to your skin tone. Always wash your make-up before you go to bed, unless you want to wake up to a face full of pimples and panda eyes in the morning! Tips If it's hard to match foundation to your skin tone, try mixing two colours together. Don't touch your face with hands too much. It just transfers the dirt from your fingers to your face clogging pores, and that's right, it causes pimples. Warnings Don't use products that are too harsh for your face. If your face feels tight and tingly after you use it's too harsh. We have the menu tweaks to make, starting today. The best get-flawless-skin regimen? It's not a trendy spa treatment. It's a way of eating. Yeah, yeah, we know that for years, experts said greasy foods and chocolate don't cause pimples and that, overall, what you eat has no effect on your skin. But new research proves otherwise. So follow these four rules on how to feed your face. Lay Off the White Stuff Turns out french fries do cause breakouts. But it's not the grease that's the culprit, it's the potatoes. In a recent study, researchers looked at 1,200 natives of an island near Papua New Guinea and 115 hunter-gatherers in Paraguay and couldn't find a single zit in the lot. What's their secret? "A diet that consists almost exclusively of protein, fruits and veggies," says Loren Cordain, Ph.D., professor of health and exercise science at Colorado State University and lead author of the study. Absent from their meals: the simple carbohydrates -- such as white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and sweets -- that are the basis of our modern diet. These carbs send our insulin levels soaring, and researchers speculate that this sets off a series of reactions that leads to breakouts. Simple food switch: Instead of refined white carbs, go for moderate amounts of complex ones like whole-grain bread, brown rice and whole-wheat pasta (they're digested more slowly and don't lead to that skin-sabotaging insulin spike).
