She is followed not by a male partner, but by a robotic arm manipulator that seems to sense her every move. For NASA Goddard technologist Vladimir Lumelsky, the performance captured on the videotape neatly shows the future of robotics. Image right: High-Tech Robot Skin: Goddard technologist Vladimir Lumelsky believes the future of robotics lies with the development of a high-tech, sensor-embedded covering that would be able to sense the environment, much like human skin. Credit: Vladimir Lumelsky, NASA GSFC It also demonstrates an advanced technology that Lumelsky hopes to develop as part of the push from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. to develop niche robotics capabilities critical for carrying out the Vision for Space Exploration . New Laboratory Under Development Lumelsky, until recently a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has begun setting up a laboratory at Goddard to develop a high-tech covering that would enable robots to sense their environment and react to it, much like humans respond when something or someone touches their skin. Such a technology, which he refers to as a "High-Tech Skin," is essential for carrying out the Vision for Space Exploration because the Vision depends heavily on humans and robots working together under a variety of working conditions, many of them highly unstructured, Lumelsky said. "Robots should be able to react, but today's robots can't. That’s the difference and that's got to change for exploration." -- Vladimir Lumelsky, NASA "Robots move well on their own, especially when nothing is in the way," Lumelsky explained. However, change the environment and a different picture emerges. "Robots should be able to react, but today's robots can't," he said. "That's the difference and that's got to change for exploration." Touch Sensing Remains Key Although great headway is being made in the area of computer vision, vision isn’t enough, he said. "Humans can survive without sight, but they can’t survive without tactile sensing. The skin is the biggest organ in our body. It's nothing more than a huge sensor." Use of Infrared Sensors Image left: Collisions: Wrapped in  High-Tech Robot Skin, the robot's movements demonstrate the feasibility of a human safely sharing space with a powerful heavy robot. Here the robot was instructed to move from its prior position in the left top corner of the frame all the way to the right, next to the large colorful loop. If no obstacles were to appear on the robot's way, it would have moved along the most economical simple curve. But obstacles do appear, and so the robot carefully moves around two "working" people, while at the same time proceeding toward its destination.  Click on image to view animation (no narration). Credit: Vladimir Lumelsky, NASA GSFC The idea is to develop a "sensitive skin" that technicians could use to cover a robot. This skin will include more than 1,000 infrared sensors that would detect an object, and send the information to the robot's "brain." The brain would digest the information, apply reasoning and react within milliseconds by directing the robot to move. Future skin prototypes likely will have a higher density of sensors on the skin, which will provide the robots with even greater dexterity. Challenges Ahead The flexible plastic modules that will house the skin’s electronics will have to undergo a lot of testing to assure that they’re space qualified and able to withstand radiation and extreme changes in light and temperature, such as those that occur on other planets. In addition, embedding the electronics on a large surface material, or printing the skin like wallpaper, presents another major hurdle. Work also is needed in the area of motion-planning development and intelligence, he added. Since moving to Goddard, Lumelsky began identifying resources needed to create his laboratory. The sensitive skin was identified as a key technology to develop at Goddard. It would prove vital in situations where humans and robots work side-by-side in the construction of large telescopes and in the operation of both in-space and extraterrestrial equipment. FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! The right (& wrong) ways to cleanse, moisturize & exfoliate your skin You probably learned in school that your skin is your body's largest organ. What you probably weren't taught is how to properly care for your skin. The truth is no matter your age or skin type, the minute you start taking care of your skin -- keeping it clean, nourished & pampered -- it will respond in gratitude & you will reap the benefits. Here I show you tips on how to properly care for your skin, from the right way to wash your face, to the best moisturizers & UV protection. Before we start with the proper daily 4-step skincare routine, you'll need to know your skin type. How you carefor your skin is utterly dependent on the type of skin you have: oily, normal/combination, dry, sensitive or sun-damaged. Check out this article to determine what skin type you are. The Basic 4-Step Skincare Regimen Step 1: Cleansing Simple is key here. You need to find a good cleanser that your skin respondswell to, and stick with it. (I list the best cleansers for skin types in this article ). Avoid soap at allcosts. According to Rona Berg, in her book, 'Beauty,'a French cosmetics executive once told her 'soap should only evertouch your skin from the neck down.' Most cleansers contain oil, water & surfactants. The oil dissolves oil on your face, surfactants dissolve dirt & makeup & the water washes it all away. The secret is finding the right mix of oil. Too much onyour skin will clog pores, while too little will dry it out. This is why you need to know your skin type. Most women need only clean their faces at night. In the morning, a splash of lukewarm water is all you need. However, if you apply moisturizer at night, you will need to cleanse in the morning, too. Never wash your face with hot or cold water (both hot & coldwater causes broken capillaries) & never go to bed with makeup on, you run the risk of clogging your pores. Also be careful about over-cleansing your skin . Here's the best way to wash your face: Use warm water to loosen dirt & clogged pores. Use a dime-sized bit of cleanser &gently apply it in a circular motion, then rinse with cool water. Cool water tends to tighten the pores. You'll also wantto take off your makeup with a proper makeup remover. Step 2: Exfoliate 'The most important thing you can do for bright, glowing skin is gentle daily exfoliation,' Katie Rodan, clinical assistant professor at Stanford University, said in Allure's April 2005 issue. 'Not weekly, daily. Do it in the shower every morning, a routine like brushing your teeth.' Every 3 weeks, skin cells are replenished, meaning new skin cells make their way up fromthe lowest level of the epidermis. The secret to exfoliating is to make way for new skin cells by getting rid of deadskin cells. Removing dead skin cells helps give your skin a youthful, fresh appearance not only because new skin cells arefresh & plump, but because getting rid of the dead skin allows your skin to absorb moisturizer more readily. Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their daily skincare routine. But trust me, if you start properly exfoliating your skin, you will notice an almost immediate difference. So how much should you exfoliate? If you have oily or combination skin, you'll need to exfoliate 4 or 5 times a week, after you cleanse. If you have dry skin or sensitive skin, it's recommended that you exfoliate once or twice a week. You'll actually need to exfoliate more in summer & any hot months because sweat acts like glue & will cause your dead skin cells to stick together and coat your skin. Many women with mature or sun-damaged skin (a sure sign: wrinkles) have turned to different types of hydroxies which act as deep exfoliants. According to Berg, one of the reasons men's skin looks more youthful than women's is because mentend to exfoliate daily when they shave. Should you use a toner? Some people swear by toners, but many beauty experts do not. Toners are meant to remove all remaining traces of oil, makeup & dirt, but a good cleanser should do this. So go ahead, skip it & save money. Turns out only copy machines really need toner. Step 3: Moisturize A basic law of beauty is that everyone, no matter her skin type, should moisturize. Even ifyour skin is oily, it will benefit from moisturizers. (The only exception is those with acne). Why? Moisturizers attract moisture & draw it into the skin. They also seal in moisture (Berg calls this the 'Saran Wrap effect') & plump skin cells. So how much should you moisturize? Your skin will tell you. When your skin is tight, it's crying out for moisture. Be carefulnot to overmoisturize -- this can cause pore-clogging. For the skinny on great moisturizers for your skin type, check out this article . 1 2 Next   Topic Index | Email to a Friend Our Story | Be a Guide | Advertising Info | Work at About | Site Map | Icons | Help User Agreement | Ethics Policy | Patent Info. | Privacy Policy | Kids' Privacy Policy ©2006 About, Inc., A part of The New York Times Company . FACIAL EXPRESSION Visual attention

Sociable machines - Facial expressions Facial expressions Kismet home Overview The robot THE FRAMEWORK Socializing Ongoing research Broader questions People Video Publications Media FACIAL EXPRESSION Visual attention Ocular-motor control Low-level features Expressive speech Affective intent Regulation Behavior Emotions Facial Behaviors Watch clip: Readable expressions (get viewer) The human face is the most complex and versatile of all species. For humans, the face is a rich and versatile instrument serving many different functions. It serves as a window to display one's own motivational state. This makes one's behavior more predictable and understandable to others and improves communication. The face can be used to supplement verbal communication. A quick facial display can reveal the speaker's attitude about the information being conveyed. Alternatively, the face can be used to complement verbal communication, such as lifting of the eyebrows to lend additional emphasis to a stressed word. Facial gestures can communicate information on their own, such as a facial shrug to express "I don't know" to another's query. The face can serve a regulatory function to modulate the pace of verbal exchange by providing turn-taking cues. The face serves biological functions as well -- closing one's eyes to protect them from a threatening stimulus, and on a longer time scale to sleep. Kismet doesn't engage in adult-level discourse, but its face serves many of these functions at a simpler, pre-linguistic level. Consequently, the robot's facial behavior is fairly complex. The above schematic shows the facial motor control system. Kismet's face currently supports four different functions, and must do so in a timely, coherent, and appropriate manner. It reflects the state of the robot's emotion system. We call these emotive expressions. It conveys social cues during social interactions with people. We call these expressive facial displays. It participates in behavioral responses (such as closing its eyes to protect them from a dangerous stimulus). It also synchronizes with the robot's speech. The face system must be quite versatile as the manner in which these four functions are manifest changes dynamically with motivational state and environmental factors. However, people seem to be the most captivated by Kismet's emotive facial expressions. Consequently, we will focus on Kismet's expressive abilities here. Emotive Facial Expressions Watch clip: Examples of expressions (get viewer) When designing the expressive abilities of a robot face, it is important to consider both the believability and readability of the facial behavior. Believability refers to how life-like the behavior appears. Readability refers to how well the observer can correctly interpret the intended expression. Kismet's face is always in motion, which greatly enhances its life-like quality. Great attention has been paid not only to how the face is configured to express a particular ``emotional" state, but also to the transitions between these states. Move mouse over points in affect space (above) to see Kismet's corresponding expressions. Kismet's facial expressions are generated using an interpolation-based technique over a three dimensional space. The three dimensions correspond to arousal, valence, and stance. These same three attributes are used to affectively assess the myriad of environmental and internal factors that contribute to Kismet's "emotional" state. We call the space defined by the [A, V, S] trio the affect space. The current affective state occupies a single point in this space at a time. As the robot's affective state changes, this point moves about within this space. Note that this space not only maps to emotional states (i.e., anger, fear, sadness, etc.) but also to the level of arousal as well (i.e., excitement and fatigue). A range of expressions generated with this technique is shown above. The procedure runs in real-time, which is critical for social interaction. click for enlarged view There are nine basis (or prototype) postures that collectively span this space of emotive expressions. Although some of these postures adjust specific facial features more strongly than the others, each prototype influences most if not all of the facial features to some degree. For instance, the valence prototypes have the strongest influence on lip curvature, but can also adjust the positions of the ears, eyelids, eyebrows, and jaw. The basis set of facial postures has been designed so that a specific location in affect space specifies the relative contributions of the prototype postures in order to produce a net facial expression that faithfully corresponds to the active "emotion". With this scheme, Kismet displays expressions that intuitively map to the emotions of anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sorrow, and surprise. Different levels of arousal can be expressed as well from interest, to calm, to weariness. There are several advantages to generating the robot's facial expression from this affect space. First, this technique allows the robot's facial expression to reflect the nuance of the underlying assessment. Hence, even through there is a discrete number of "emotions", the expressive behavior spans a continuous space. Second, it lends clarity to the facial expression since the robot can only be in a single affective state at a time (by our choice), and hence can only express a single state at a time. Third, the robot's internal dynamics are designed to promote smooth trajectories through affect space. This gives the observer a lot of information as to how the robot's affective state is changing, which makes the robot's facial behavior more interesting. Furthermore, by having the face mirror this trajectory, the observer has immediate feedback as to how their behavior is influencing the robot's internal state. It is almost as delicious as the Lemon Poppy Seed Facial Cleanser, also by Burts Bees. This product works really well and keeps your face clear and smooth. Anything from this product line is really excellent and is all natural, which is great for those with sensitive skin. I recommend this or the Lemon Poppy Seed Cleanser. I also like the Garden Tomato facial soap and toner. That is the best for those of you with oily skin. Was this review helpful to you? This Citrus scrub works very good. My skin is sensetive and gets dry quickly when I wash it with other facial scrubs but with Burt's it didn't ...my skin felt soft and clean. another great product from Burt's bees! Was this review helpful to you? ( Report this ) The Best Scrub Ever! , September 13, 2005 Reviewer: Ayutias Darnell - See all my reviews I have sensitive skin, and tend to be dry-normal. This scrub scrubs very good... my face feels very soft like a baby's skin and has a vibrant glow after using it! The smell is a little sweet-spicy, like pumpkin pie. But I don't mind at all, since I like sweet smells. After using it, it does leave some kind of oily feeling (moist) (I think it comes from all the natural oil content of the nuts/ cloves in it), but that makes my face feel healthy. You can also use the lettuce toner after using this, so it will feel less oily and feel even softer! It is a little dry, and it does crumble, but I just mix it up with water. I think I will try mixing it with a little honey, or natural liquid soap sometime to make it easier to use. Overall, I love this scrub. Was this review helpful to you?
