Bailey - English Cocker Spaniel - July 1, 2002 July 1, 2002 Name: Bailey Age: Seven and a half years old Gender: Male Breed: English Cocker Spaniel Home: Borlänge, Sweden W e adopted Bailey from Sevilla, Spain from a rescue organizationcalled Animales de Andelucia. His family was going through a divorceand could not keep him, so they took him to ADA to be adopted out. Isaw him at the site and it was love at first sight! I always wanted aCocker Spaniel, especially the English type! And his color is agorgeous mahogany red! We renamed him from Bady to Bailey because Ididn't care for his old name. He moved in on January 28th, 2001 andhas been spoiled and well cared for by us. He's our pride and joy! Bailey's got a great personality. He's very sensitive, affectionate,loving, comical and protective of his owners (my husband and I) andanyone he knows. He's timid around children under eight or nine years old,and strangers. But once he gets to know you, he's okay! He reallydislikes cats, other male dogs and people who are skiiing or skating(inline). In the ten months that we've had him, he's learned tricksand commands in both English and Swedish. He can do: sit, stay, downstay, roll over, high five, shake paw, fetch, speak, catch treats inthe air. We are teaching him new tricks every so often. He loves tofetch things, such as twigs, frisbees and balls. As I said, he'sextremely affectionate and loves being around people. His previousfamily must've not paid attention to him! The toxin is called Botulinum toxin, because it was first found in a sausage, and the Latin for sausage is "botulus". It goes under various names such as Botox, Dysport and Myobloc. We started using it only a few decades ago, but it's really caught on only in the last few years - so we haven't had it long enough to work out the side effects. There are hundreds of medical uses. For example, some people have difficulty in swallowing because the sphincter muscle at the bottom of their oesophagus (where it joins into the stomach) won't relax. The toxin can relax this muscle for a few months. Back in the old days, botulinum toxin's only claim to fame was causing food poisoning. But today, the poison that causes fatal food poisoning can help the food go down. The cosmetic use is to paralyse muscles in the face and stop you making wrinkles. All medications, including herbal ones, have side effects. The side effects of botulinum toxin tend to be local, and depend on where they are injected. They include difficulty in swallowing, headache, neck pain, drooping of the eyelids, nausea, and bruising or soreness of the injection site. Surprisingly, botulinum injections could sometimes make you grow wrinkles in untreated parts of the face where you didn't have wrinkles before. We don't know how this happens, but here's one theory. You take the botulinum injection, and temporarily paralyse some muscles. Your brain soon realises that a conditioned or programmed activity (e.g., frowning in annoyance, or lifting your forehead in surprise) is being blocked. This prabably activates other muscle groups, which try to maintain the conditioned activity. And so you lose wrinkles in one part of your face - but the untreated area grows new wrinkles that it never had before. Botulinum toxin can remove wrinkles - if they're caused by uptight muscles. But it will do absolutely nothing for wrinkles caused by the skin losing its elasticity. This happens naturally with ageing, smoking or sun exposure. In these cases, the sausage poison does no good - and can only do harm. When botulinum toxin was used to treat neck muscle spasm, the side effects included difficulty in swallowing (9-90%) and excessive muscle weakness (3-31%). In one case, the practitioner shoved the needle too deeply into the neck. The patient lost the ability to swallow, so she had to spend three weeks in the hospital being fed through a needle in her arm. In another case, a soap opera actress lost her voice for three months. The scriptwriters had to creatively write her out of the series until she recovered her voice. The toxin is applied by many small injections, rather than a few big ones. So in your forehead or brow, one tiny muscle above the right eye might get more juice than the corresponding tiny muscle above the left eye. For the next three months, one eyebrow could be up, while the other eyebrow could be down. Pain is another side effect. I got an email from a woman who had hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) on the hands and in the armpits. She wrote me: "I received 20 needles in each hand and 10 under each armpit - the pain was indescribable. The end result is that for me it decreased the sweating by about 70% for the hands and 95% for the underarms." So the treatment worked - but the pain of the injections was horrendous. 4.3% of people with hyperhydrosis who get the injections to reduce the sweating in the armpits get increased sweating in other areas. But they were so pleased with the drop in sweating in the armpits, that they continued with the treatments. Another problem is that botulinum toxin stops you from revealing your emotions. It freezes your face. Your face can no longer express its full and subtle range of emotions. You can no longer show love and hate, or grudging approval or wry amusement. How can you tell what a person's reaction is when they have frozen smiles, unfurrowable brows and paralysed cheek muscles? Some men have difficulty in trying to understand women. What difference will sausage poison make? Itwill make it even harder to read a woman's face, by destroying her ability to express many of her emotions. The film director, Baz Lurhmann, said about many female actors who use this poison, "... their faces really can't move properly." His fellow director, Martin Scorsese, agrees. Paul de Freitas, a London-based casting director, says that one third of the actors he sees have had botox injections. He said, "We waste a great deal of time weeding them out of auditions." Jeremy Zimmerman, another London casting agent says that men are also taking Botox, "I had to veto Mickey Rourke for the leading role in a British film. I had to explain to his agent that we wouldn't be using him because his face looked so frozen." Even so, its use is very common. Alex Kuczynski wrote in the New York Times, "the television industry depends on Botox as much as it does on pancake makeup and forgiving lighting."
