Return to home page Help with sensitive skin After having a shower I feel very hot and clammy and my skin feels itchy and tight. I also get very sweaty. The symptoms normally last for around half-an-hour. The severity of the symptoms varies, although they are worse when I wash my hair or when I use shower gel. I also get the same problems with having a bath, but to a lesser degree. I know that increased skin sensitivity can be a symptom of ME due to the nervous system nor working correctly. Is there anything that could be done to help my symptoms? Or is there anything I could do to help alleviate my symptoms myself? Im male and in my late teens. Dr Betty Dowsett, retired Microbiologist who has worked in the field of ME for over 20 years, replies: This symptom is common and is also well-described in multiple sclerosis where nerve endings are commonly stripped of their insulation (myelin sheath). This results in a remarkable sensitivity to heat. Demyelination also occurs in ME but almost always repairs itself. This means that many people with ME complain of the temporary after-effects of a shower or bath. A risk of only 0.5% in temperature is enough to cause this unpleasant skin reaction. My advice is that a bath is better than a shower (as you have noticed) and to not have the water too hot. Also, buy toiletries that are pH balanced, 100% perfume and colour free (such as the Simple range) and contain no animal ingredients. Alcohol-free deodorants are best. Aqueous cream can be helpful for inflamed skin. Ginger Orange Cayenne Warming Foot Scrub smells great, feels great on the skin and really warms your feet on a cold night! Yield: 1 application (for both feet) Prep Time: 10 minutes Price Category: 1 Difficulty Level: 1 Shelf Life: 3 months Rating: Add your rating! Ingredients: 1/4 cup sugar (white or brown) 1/4 cup sweet almond oil 6 drops orange essential oil 1 drop ginger essential oil 1 level teaspoon powdered cayenne pepper Buy Ingredients! Blending Procedure: In a plastic bowl, mix together the sugar and oil. Add the essential oil and stir. Add the cayenne pepper last and stir well to mix. To use, sit comfortably in the tub or over a pan of water and/or a large towel to catch the sugar scrub as it is applied. Scoop up a handful of the scrub for each foot and massage vigorously yet with care over heels, ankles, toes, arches and the balls of your feet. Be sure to scrub any rough areas especially well. Rinse the tub well and discard any excess. Take a warm bath if you''d like but you don''t want to bathe in cayenne pepper so be sure to rinse the tub thoroughly before getting in. The freshness of this product is extended if it is packaged in an airtight glass container. Enjoy! Comments: "this foot scrub is so easy to make and leaves your feet silky smooth, almost as if they shed into new skin." Submitted by: sweet child Add a comment Only registered users may rate recipes. Skin Care

Winter Skin Care Guidelines Winter Skin Care Guidelines The low humidity common in many parts of the United States during winter can cause dry, irritated skin. When skin becomes dry and irritated, eczema can flare. Here are some tips to help skin feel more comfortable during winter or anytime the air is dry: 1. Use a humidifier . With the heat on and the windows closed, the air inside can become very dry in the winter, making the dryness and itching of eczema even worse. Use a humidifier to place moisture in the air. If you dont want to invest in an expensive humidifying system, smaller, relatively inexpensive humidifiers can be obtained at a local drug store. Placing two or three of these around your home will help to humidify the dry air. This can keep skin from drying and becoming cracked and itchy. 2. Switch to an oil-based moisturizer and moisturize frequently . The more oil a moisturizer contains the more effectively it protects against moisture loss. Moisturizers that come in ointment form contain the most oil because an ointment, by definition, consists of 80% oil and 20% water. This water-in-oil emulsion forms a protective layer on the skin and makes it more moisturizing than creams and lotions. Ointments are especially beneficial when humidity is low. Ointments should not be used on areas of the body that tend to get hot and sweaty. 3. Before Going Outside in Winter: Apply a heavy layer of moisturizing broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to the face, hands, and any other skin that may be exposed. This will act as a barrier to help protect against the harsh elements and is especially important if you will be outside for any length of time. Sunscreen is important in winter as the suns reflective powers are great year round - 17% on the sand and 80% on the snow. Today, several products are available that combine oily, moisturizing cream with sunscreen. If you are unsure of which product to use, ask a dermatologist. Grab those gloves. Protecting hands from the cold air and low humidity plays an important role in preventing flare-ups. Make sure the gloves are made from material that does not irritate your skin. Some patients find that wearing a cotton mitten next to the skin and a woolen mitten over the cotton one, keeps hands warm and dry. 4. Dress in layers. The most common triggers of the scratch/itch cycle are sweating and overheating. Wearing layers allows you to remove clothing as needed to prevent overheating. Be sure to wear loose-fitting cotton fabrics next to your skin. 5. Shed wet clothes and shoes immediately . These can irritate the skin and cause a flare-up. Alternative Names: Skin redness or inflammation; Skin lesion; Rubor; Skin rash; Erythema Considerations: Often, the cause of a rash can be determined from its visible characteristics and other symptoms. Common Causes: A simple rash is called dermatitis, meaning inflammation of the skin. Contact dermatitis is caused by things your skin touches, such as: Dyes and other chemicals in clothing Chemicals in elastic, latex, and rubber products Cosmetics, soaps, and detergents Poison ivy, oak, or sumac Seborrheic dermatitis is a rash that appears in patches of redness and scaling around the eyebrows, eyelids, mouth, nose, the trunk, and behind the ears. If it happens on your scalp, it is called dandruff in adults and cradle cap in infants. Age, stress, fatigue, weather extremes, oily skin, infrequent shampooing, and alcohol-based lotions aggravate this harmless but bothersome condition. Other common causes of a rash include: Eczema (atopic dermatitis) -- tends to happen in people with allergies or asthma. The rash is generally red, itchy, and scaly. Psoriasis -- tends to occur as red, scaly, itchy patches over joints and along the scalp. Fingernails may be affected. Impetigo -- common in children, this infection is from bacteria that live in the top layers of the skin. Appears as red sores that turn into blisters, ooze, then crust over. Shingles -- a painful blistered skin condition caused by the same virus as chickenpox. The virus can lie dormant in your body for many years and re-emerge as shingles. Childhood illnesses like chicken pox , measles , roseola , rubella , hand-foot-mouth disease , fifth disease , and scarlet fever . Medications and insect bites or stings . Many medical conditions can cause a rash as well. For example: Lupus erythematosus Rheumatoid arthritis , especially the juvenile type Kawasaki disease References: Auerback PS, ed.
