The series profiles the 48 most accomplished, cutting-edge, and controversial scientists in the field of aging research. "Trading cards are a fun and easy way to introduce the public to the people who are shaping aging science, research, and policy," says Daniel Perry, Exectuive Director, Alliance for Aging Research. "They highlight the important work that these experts are doing and show the diversity of projects underway around the world." The cards are available on-line at www.SAGECrossroads.net and will soon be available in print. Visitors to the website can email a favorite card to a friend or colleague or nominate experts for inclusion on future cards. Each trading card includes information about a featured scientist, such as research specialties and goals, key findings, publications, and predictions. Some of the most popular trading cards in the series feature experts like -- Aubrey de Grey, a "prophet of longevity" who believes that aging is curable, -- Rudy Tanzi, a Boston researcher who is breaking ground in the study of Alzheimer's disease, and -- Richard Miller, a geneticist working to breed research mice with physiology more similar to humans' in order to better understand the mechanisms of aging. SAGE Crossroads is the premier online resource for emerging issues related to human aging. Its aim is to bring together viewpoints from the entire spectrum of aging and health communities and provide a forum for interaction and elevated discussion. Launched in 2003 by the Alliance for Aging Research and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (publishers of Science Magazine), www.SAGECrossroads.net provides an opportunity for policy makers, journalists, scientists and the public to get together and explore the rapidly developing field of aging research. One of the VERY BEST Posted by redmaple on 01/17/2006 I have been fortunate to travel to many places, stay at fine hotels and resorts, most of which cater to the "spa" customer. I can honestly say Breathe is one of the best of the best spas anyplace. Thier professionalism and attention to detail is awesome. I felt just as pampered and relaxed here as I did in the finest spas outside of SLC. Breathe rivals my experience with a spas that feature private beachfront cabanas for treatment. I didn't think I could find anything more relaxing and pampering than spa treatments in a cabana, right on the beach, with the ocean waves gently lapping on the shore in front of me--I was wrong...Breathe is one of the best anywhere! The aim of this retrospective study was toevaluate the possible occurrence of PAH as a complication of SAS inpatients without COPD. METHODS Right heartcatheterisation was performed in 44 patients with SAS and without COPDconfirmed by polysomnography (apnoea index >5/h) admitted for theadministration of nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). RESULTS PrecapillaryPAH, defined as mean pulmonary arterial pressure of >20 mm Hg withpulmonary capillary wedge pressure <15 mm Hg, was observed in 12/44(27%) patients with SAS. There were no significant differences inapnoea index between patients with (PAH+) and those without PAH (PAH-)(42.6 (26.3) versus 35.8 (21.7) apnoeas/h). The PAH+ group differedsignificantly from the PAH- group in the following respects: lowerdaytime arterial oxygen tension (Pa O 2 ) (9.6 (1.1) versus 11.3 (1.5) kPa, p=0.0006); higher daytime arterial carbondioxide tension (Pa CO 2 ) (5.8 (0.5) versus 5.3 (0.5) kPa, p=0.002); more severe nocturnal hypoxaemia with a higherpercentage of total sleep time spent at Sa O 2 <80% (32.2 (28.5)% versus 10.7 (18.8)%, p=0.005); and higher bodymass index (BMI) (37.4 (6) versus 30.3 (6.7) kg/m 2 ,p=0.002). The PAH+ patients had significantly lower values of vitalcapacity (VC) (87 (14)% predicted versus 105 (20)% predicted, p=0.005), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV 1 ) (82 (14)% predicted versus 101 (17)% predicted, p=0.001), expiratoryreserve volume (40 (16)% predicted versus 77 (41)% predicted,p=0.003), and total lung capacity (87 (13)% predicted versus 98 (18)%predicted, p=0.04). Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed thatmean pulmonary artery pressure (PAPm) was positively correlated with BMI and negatively with Pa O 2 . CONCLUSION Pulmonaryarterial hypertension is frequently observed in patients with SAS, evenwhen COPD is absent, and appears to be related to the severity ofobesity and its respiratory mechanical consequences. Here's a few you can dismiss for all time. Drinking eight glasses of water will hydrate your skin. Don't get us wrong - drinking water is a great health tip and good for your whole body - inside. However, your skin becomes dry from external aggressors - cold, sun, wind, pollution, even room heaters and air conditioners, so it needs something that works from the outside in, i.e., moisturizer. The Real Deal. Right after you wash your face or shower, massage in your moisturizer while skin is still damp to get the benefits of the water and the moisturizer. Smoking and caffeine cause dry skin. Tests show that caffeine has no direct effect on your skin, but it does deplete water from the body. Smoking only works indirectly to make your skin old before its time, by decreasing circulation so the skin doesn't get as much oxygen - which is essential in creating and maintaining healthy skin cells. In addition, the repetitive eye squinting and pursing of the lips while you smoke can cause premature wrinkling around the eyes and the mouth. Baby oil or petroleum jelly heals dry, chapped skin better than moisturizer. Baby Oil and Petroleum Jelly are good barriers to help prevent further moisture loss - but they don't put anything back in the bank. Moisturize dry, chapped areas - then, if you want, seal the added hydration in, with a thin layer of baby oil or petroleum jelly. You can scrub acne away. Coarse, heavy-grained exfoliators are often recommended for acne-prone, oily skin. But used too often and too vigorously they can actually aggravate acne by opening the cysts and by encouraging the skin to produce even more oil to compensate for what's being ruthlessly stripped away. Instead, use a medium strength exfoliator, suspended in a gel or paste, and don't overdo it. Beauty Solutions HomePage ! Professional Beauty Tips Series ! | You And The Sun Series !
