PV affects both women and men equally. The painful blisters found in PV are irregularly shaped, elevated skin lesions, usually more than one-half inch across. The blisters can form on either normal skin or reddened skin. Lesions usually start in the mouth and may be found on the lips, tongue, throat, and the inside of the cheeks. Painful blisters in the mouth make drinking and eating difficult. Blisters then spread to the head, face, and armpits, before moving on to the rest of the body. As they form, blisters are initially tense and filled with clear fluid. If you press on the skin next to a blister, the blister will either extend or a new blister will form. After 2-3 days, the blisters become loose, and the fluid within the blister becomes cloudy. At this stage, the blisters break easily, leaving a very painful area of raw skin underneath that quickly crusts over. These open sores are very susceptible to infection. Because the blisters can cover a large portion of the body surface, infection can be severe and easily spread into the blood. If not treated, these severe infections may lead to death. Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) SJS occurs in all age groups but is more common among those aged 20-40 years. SJS affects men twice as often as women. The early symptoms include fever, muscle and joint pains, generalized fatigue, and itching or burning sensations in the skin. The SJS rash starts in the mucous membranes, usually of the mouth and eyes, and may involve other mucous membranes in severe cases. Then the skin lesions common to SJS develop. These lesions are often called "target lesions" because they have a bluish or purple center surrounded by a circle of red. These lesions start as reddened spots about 1 inch around and usually appear in clusters. Although the rash may start anywhere on the body, it typically involves the feet, hands, and the front of the legs and arms more frequently than the chest, abdomen, or back. The rash usually occurs on both sides of the body. Within 1-2 days, the rash develops into the typical target lesion. The centers of the lesions may become bluish or purple with a surrounding halo of redness. Blisters then form in the centers of the lesions and may itch or be painful. Target lesions usually appear in successive crops over the body and may run together, forming one large lesion. Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) TEN occurs in all age groups but normally affects adults. TEN occurs twice as often in women as men. TEN is thought to be a more severe form of SJS. Early symptoms of fever, fatigue, joint and muscle pains, cough, nasal congestion, and runny nose may be present along with general skin tenderness up to a week before the onset of skin rash. Mouth lesions and conjunctivitis , or red eyes, may be present 1-2 days before the skin rash occurs. The skin rash usually starts on the face or genitals and rapidly moves to the rest of the body. The skin becomes reddened and is painful to touch. Large blisters can run together, and large sheets of skin peel from the body. Eye involvement is serious, usually leads to pus drainage from the eyes, and may result in blindness. On average in TEN, up to 50% of the body surface is affected. The loss of skin leads to large amounts of fluid loss through exposed surfaces and increased risk for infection. The rash may also be found in the linings of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Without medical attention, TEN may result in death. Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) TSS occurs in teens to young adults aged 15-34 years. Two-thirds of people with TSS are younger than 25 years. Four out of 5 are female. Symptoms begin up to 2 days before the onset of skin rash and include fever greater than 102°F, sore throat, headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. TSS may involve the mucous membranes with red, irritated eyes, and a beefy-red tongue. Dizziness or a light-headed feeling when standing up is also common. Joints and eyelids also may swell. A diffuse red rash then rapidly appears that may cover most or all of the body. If you press on the red areas of skin, the skin will blanch, or turn white. Releasing pressure will cause the redness to return. The skin remains flat with no raised areas, bumps, or blisters. Other organ systems also are affected by TSS, and TSS may lead to kidney, liver, respiratory, and heart failure. The brain may also be involved leading to confusion or disorientation. Shock occurs when the cardiovascular system is unable to maintain blood pressure, leading to dizziness or lightheadedness when standing. The rash will usually disappear in about 3-5 days. During recovery, after the rash is gone, skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet begins to flake and peel off. In severe cases, fingernails, toenails, and hair may fall out. Other areas of skin may also begin to flake and peel. Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSS) SSS is a disease found in children, typically aged 6 months to 6 years. Initial symptoms include fever and irritability, and areas of skin may be tender before the rash breaks out. The rash in SSS comes on suddenly and begins in places where your skin has creases: armpits, groin, neck, and around the mouth and eyes. It then quickly spreads to cover most or all of the body. The skin is red, warm, tender to touch, and has a sandpaper texture. The rash is similar to that found in scarlet fever, a less harmful disorder. The difference between scarlet fever and SSS is that in SSS the rash is painful to touch. About 1 day after the onset of the rash, the skin begins to wrinkle and form large, irregular, loose blisters. The blisters break open easily, and the outer layer of skin peels off in sheets over the next 3-5 days. As the skin blisters and peels, it looks as if it has been scalded, which led to the name of the disorder. Raw skin underneath the blisters dries out quickly after the skin peels off and heals in the next 10-14 days. < Life-Threatening Skin Rashes Causes Life-Threatening Skin Rashes, When to Seek Medical Care > Sections - Life-Threatening Skin Rashes Overview - Life-Threatening Skin Rashes Causes - Life-Threatening Skin Rashes Symptoms - When to Seek Medical Care - Exams and Tests - Life-Threatening Skin Rashes Treatment - Next Steps - Synonyms and Keywords - Authors and Editors Are you sad, bored, fatigued, irritable, unable to concentrate, pessimistic? Dang (Westminster, California United States)- See all my reviews I'm a guy, and tried this out of boredom.. I've hit my 30's and am doing whatever I can to stay looking young. Nothing wrong with that, right? ;) Anyway, I tried it the first week and felt my skin was noticeably softer and smoother. It also appeared a bit pinker than before I started. I assume it is because there is more circulation of blood to my skin then before. I will expect the improvements to continue, as others have mentioned on the internet. As for the equipment, the applicating tool is very good quality. Solid design, easy hold, and very quiet. When you put it against your face the vibrations will take getting used to. I use a cybersonic toothbrush and am used to the vibrations and humming you'll experience throughout your head. Perhaps that is what the person was talking about who said this unit is loud.. But realistically, it is relatively quiet, not loud by any means.. For you homophobes, you can use it in the closet and not be scared of your girlfriend walking in on you ;) LOL... Anyway, the lotion is gritty like fine sandpaper, but doesn't feel at all harsh on the skin when using it. I enough is provided to get the results you're looking for. The unit comes with two sponge heads, the applicator, the applicator stand, the microdermabrasion lotion, and two AA batteries. A fine product. I bet if black and decker makes one guys will buy it ;P Was this review helpful to you? Smith "janemarks" (Michigan)- See all my reviews I was doubtful about this product as well, but wanted to give it a try. At first let me say that just the facial massage is pleasant and then the feel of your skin after just the first couple times is so soft and smooth. I've let my face rest a week and now am into the 2-3 times a week mode. My pores are smaller, my face is smoother and I do notice that my skin is glowing. I am anxious to see if continued use helps small lines go away. I am 47 and have never used anything on my skin that I felt worked like this. I was using the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle cream before this and liked it. The cream contains retinol and they suggest not to use a retinol product with the microdermabrasion system, but I hated to stop using the cream and so I have continued to do so, luckily for me with no skin irritation. I find that using the system at night before bed for about 5 minutes is all I need. Also let me add that this doesn't have a strong smell, it is almost scentless. I tried another brand of microdermabrasion previous to this and the smell of the product stayed on my face all day and became sickening. I would endorse this product, it's great. But use it for yourself and how it makes your skin and face feel. We all notice the minor flaws we have but other people don't, and they probably won't notice the difference in the improvement of your skin as you do either. Was this review helpful to you? It ranges from mild to moderate depending on the climate. I've tried Proactive (which doesn't work for me or any family members). However I guess proper exfoliation is the key because not only has my face completely cleared up but my overall skin tone is glowing and amazing. Skin I had previously thought was unattainable to me. I've also seen definate fading of the scars from years and years of breakouts. So while it doesn't advertise that it could help treat acne, if you think about it, acne is due to pores clogged with sebum and dead skin cells so proper GENTLE exfoliation is critical. I have *very* sensitive skin and find that this does not irritate my skin at all. And I can rarely buy anything right off the shelf and not break out from it. I am also steaming my face and using clay masks alternately on days that I don't microderm. It's also easy to clean and will be much cheaper to maintain than it's similar as-seen-on-TV counter part. So five big fat shiny stars. Try it. Get it from a place with a good return policy so you can get your money back if it doesn't agree with you. :) Was this review helpful to you? Park "skintelligence" (New York, New York)- See all my reviews This is truly an amazing product. It cleans and revitalizes my face like nothing out there. First, it gets rid of all the gunk in my pores including blackheads. Never before have had such clean, clear pores. Second, it helps with sun damage and overall look of your complexion. My face really looks younger and more glowing every time I use it. Finally, it only takes 5 minutes or so. The directions say to do this 2 minutes on each area of the face. So I do it for about 5 minutes and cover all of my face. There's no need to overdo it - in fact, I've read it's bad to overexfoliate so just limit to 5-10 minutes on your whole face and you're on your way to a new you!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! Was this review helpful to you? If you take off the sponge top you notice there is nothing that moves or can turn to actually make the sponge exfoliate well. After my "session" I only felt the effect in my hand from the vibration but my face felt the same maybe a bit softer but from the cream it comes with due to when I tried washing it; it is was much more heavy "creme" than "crystals". I gave it two stars to see if it might has any effect if I continue to use it (I hope, for what it costs) but NO WAY does it compare to the real thing. I'm thinking of going with a sauna steamer which I hear comes with a microderm brush included and works pretty well. Was this review helpful to you? Mcintire "kmcintire" (SC)- See all my reviews I thought this would be another waste of money, but I saw and felt results after the very first use. I can't even explain how wonderful my skin felt. I am more than pleased with this item and will continue using it faithfully. I have dark patches on my face and they are gradually disappearing. Nothing else I have ever tried even came close to fading them. I would recommend this to anyone looking for better facial appearance. Was this review helpful to you? I've never been trendy. I was a late passenger on the capri pants bandwagon. I've never worn horn-rimmed glasses or Steve Madden shoes. I have yet to buy Pepsi Twist or try fondue. But, this spring I found myself taking part in the trendiest fad of the millennium thus far, satirized by the likes of The Onion and Saturday Night Live: I got Botox-ed. "And what does a 22-year-old college student with no trace of crow's feet need Botox for?" many asked, right before they asked me to furrow my brow. Now, I may be vain about certain aspects of my appearance, but premature wrinkles were the last of my worries. No, my reasons for using Botox were far less trivial. For me, Botox offered another un-tapped treatment for my chronic migraines. After years of experimenting with medications and hospitalizations, as well as trying other alternative treatments like acupuncture, Botox seemed to be the next logical step. Yes, I was to become a human pincushion. Numerous Internet searches as well as articles in the Wall Street Journal revealed the effectiveness of Botox in treating migraines. Essentially, Botox is a weak form of the poisonous botulinum toxin responsible for causing botulism. Before its cosmetic benefits were discovered, Botox was originally created to treat conditions like droopy eyelids and muscle spasms, by paralyzing the muscle in which it is injected. Headache doctors and neurologists use Botox for that reason. If some people's migraines are caused by muscle spasms in their forehead, neck, temple and scalp, then paralyzing those muscles with Botox should, in theory, prevent the headaches. The paralysis is temporary and typically lasts three to four months. Before I made the appointment for the Botox treatments, I did a little research on Botox. It's not FDA approved for migraine treatment, causing it to not be covered by insurance companies when a typical treatment costs $900 to $1,300. At the time of my appointment, it was just a few weeks away from being FDA approved for cosmetic reasons. Also the treatments tended not to work as well for intractable, or chronic daily migraines like mine. In the end, I knew I felt that I had to give it a shot anyway. My monthly pharmacy bills were costing around that of a Botox treatment. My doctor at the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago happened to be the doctor who was conducting the clinic's own Botox trials, so he warned me that I wasn't the best candidate for a success story. But, the prospect of a possible three to four months without migraines looked too appealing. With both of my parents at the doctor's appointment, we agreed to go for it. Because it's still in the trial stages and because of the expense, I was asked to sign a waiver explaining the expenses, side-effects and potential risks. I asked the doctor how many injections the treatment included. I was expecting something around 10-12 injections. He replied that the treatment required a whopping 23 injections! My stomach instantly knotted and my jaw hit the floor. My parents' eyes bugged out. My dad excused himself from the office, choosing to do some window shopping rather than watching the procedure, while I begged my mom, a nurse, to stay with me in case I needed a hand to squeeze. I had survived acupuncture needles, IVs, and giving myself shots, but I shuddered at the thought of 23 injections to my face, neck, and shoulders. In sheer panic, I made the sign of the cross, said several quick prayers and signed the waiver with shaking hands. The needles used for Botox injections are small, subcutaneous, insulin needles, not the long intra-muscular needles used for injecting pain medications and vaccinations. My doctor told me there would be 12 facial injections, six injections on the back of my head, and two on each shoulder. I was told to lie down on an exam table as he started the facial injections where he injected the Botox into my forehead from temple to temple, between my eyebrows, and above my eyebrows. Now, in reading up on Botox, most of the descriptions of the procedure said that the injections hurt as much as a bug bite. This isn't a very accurate description. For me it was more of a very sharp pinch, followed by the feeling of the solution being swished through my skin. My mom, who was sitting a few feet away thought it looked far more painful than I said it did. Each injection swelled to the size of a very swollen bee sting, resulting in 12 welts on my forehead. "Don't worry, you look like the wreck of Hesperus now, but you'll look fine very soon," said my doctor before he proceeded to the injections on the back of my head, for which I then sat down and leaned my head on the table. I thought that the injections hurt the worst on my head. After six sticks on my head, he finished with two injections on the top of each shoulder. Then I breathed a huge sigh of relief. Not as bad as I expected; no screaming, swearing or crying, and I was done. I didn't experience any adverse reactions to the treatment. My forehead could still wrinkle up when I frowned or furrowed my brows, or as my mom said, I could still shoot her a dirty look. Unfortunately, the treatments did nothing for my migraines, which progressed as usual. But I had to I try it, I still reason to myself. But more importantly, I now have something in common with Botox fanatics like Carrie Fisher, Madonna and Danny Bonaducci. Now that's something to be proud of.
