Dry Skin (xerosis) <<Back to Index Dry Skin (xerosis) Dry skin, also called xerosis, is a common problem. Your skin needs moisture to stay smooth and supple, and retaining moisture is especially difficult in winter. Central heating of home and other buildings is very drying to the skin. Simple daily routines, such as bathing and towel drying, may actually remove moisture from the skin. Modifying your bathing routine will help preserve your skin's moisture. Bathing provides the skin will moisturize temporarily, but it removes the skin's oily lipid layer and in the long run causes more moisture loss than gain. The wrong moisturizing lotion can have the same effect. Generally, water-based lotions (Lubriderm, Keri lotion, others) are best cosmetically but oil-based creams are more effective in trapping moisture. Instructions: Each day when you take your bath or shower, try to use lukewarm water. Hot water dries out the skin. Try to limit your time to fifteen minutes or less in the bath or shower. Bathing should be done no more than once a day. If you bathe too frequently you will remove the natural oils from the skin causing dryness. Avoid using harsh soaps that dry the skin. Recommended soaps are Dove, Olay and Basis. Even better than soap are skin cleansers such as Cetaphil Lotion, Oilatum-AD and Aquanil. Deodorant soaps are often very harsh and drying. If you need them, limit their use to areas that develop an odor such as the armpits, genital area, and feet. Avoid vigorous use of a washcloth in cleansing. When toweling dry, do not rub the skin. Blot or pat dry so there is still some moisture left on the skin. Next apply a moisturizer to the skin. The best time to do this is immediately after a bath or shower so that the moisturizer holds in the moisture from the shower. Choose either Cetaphil Cream, Moisturel Cream, or Eucerin Cream. If you have severely dry skin, apply an oil to the still moist skin such as Neutrogena Light Sesame Oil, Hermal Body Oil, Alpha-Keri Oil or Robathol, then apply a moisturizing cream and also apply the moisturizer at bedtime. All areas that are exposed to the sun, such as the face, ears, hands, and back of the neck should have a moisturizer containing sun block or a sunscreen of SPF 15 or greater applied daily. For laundry, use "All-free", "Tide-free" or "Cheer-free" detergents. Avoid using fabric softeners, especially in the dryer. Keep irritating fabrics away from your skin. Don't wear clothing made of wool or other "scratchy" fabrics. Use cotton percale sheets on your bed. Use a humidifier in your home during the central heating season. If sweating causes itching, modify your activity and surroundings to minimize sweating. Work and sleep in a fairly constant temperature (68-75o F) and humidity (45-55%). Remember to keep drinking plenty of water and other liquids to keep your skin moist from the inside, too. If you are like we used to be, you probably do not read the labels considering that if you buy a productfrom a well-known company that it is OK. WRONG! Following are several basic ingredients we think one should be aware of as most of these(as well as many others) can be deadly to the Human body: Petro-chemicals are derived from petroleum which produce what are called xeno-oestrogens. While we all havenatural estrogens it is the bad estrogens that are produced from ingredients such as petrochemicals thataffect our reproductive genes. Xeno-Oestrogens are synthetic esstrogens which stimulate hormonal imbalances, those ingredients ending inline, lene and others include propyl. BHA is as a preservative and anti-oxodant in personal care products. Chlorine most commonly known as bleach destroys living organisms required to bio-degrade - break down cleaners in our soil and water. Harmful to the respirtory system many household cleaners contain high concentrationsof chlorine. The World Health Organization has called for a phase-out and ban on chlorine in domesticproducts world-wide. Sodium Laurel Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate are ingredients common in facial cleaners, shampoos,bubble bath, bady wassh, and toothpaste. Health hazards regarding these and others have been knownsince 1983 as stated in the American College of Toxicology. these hazards include tissue damage thatcould result in brain, liver, heart and lung damage in the long term, eye damage (especially children),degradation of the immune system, severe skin irritation, hair loss and ezcema. These (and others)when absorbed through the skin maintain residual body levels in the heart, liver and lungs and brain. DEA (Diethanolamine is used as a lathering agent in shampoos, body cleansers, etc. and is readily absorbed through the skin and accumulates in the brain and is s skin and eye irritant. Diazolidinyl Urea is a formaldehyde releasing agent often used in personal and baby careproducts. Coal Tar often used in psoriasis treatments, shampoos, dyes and cosmetics. Exposure can leadto increased risks of lung, scrotum and skin cancer. Glycol is used in many cosmetic preparations as an antifreeze and brake fluid in motor vehicles.A petrochemical and lubricant. No value to the skin but it used as a gliding agent to ensure the creamor lotin glides onto the skin easily. also used in rinse products in dishwashing machines. Vinigar isa better substitute. DMDM Hydantoin is a formaldehyde releasing agent. Formaldehyde Chemical name formalin is used as a preservative in shampoos, baby washes, mascara,creams, bubble baths and anti-dandruff shampoos and some deodorants. Also a common ingredient in fabricsoftners, glue preparations used in building (especially panel boards such as those used in caravansand melamine). It is known to cause eye, nose and throat irriation, coughing, asthma attacks, shortnessof breath, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, nose bleeds, headaches, dizziness and is a suspected humancarcinogen. It is known to cause serious weakening of the immune system. Propylene Glycol is used as a skin conditioning agent, a solventand a humectant. It is readily absorbed through the skin and scalp and affects the levir and kidneys,where it is suspected of causing abnormalities. Caustics irritates skin and are still used in most soaps tobreak down tallow (animal fats). Phosphates are used in many different foods and are animportant ingredient in fertilizers. When phosphates are used in excess and leach into waterwaays thenutrients feed alge growth causing eutrophication (algal bloom). Fluoride an ingredient often found in toothpaster, it ispoison to humans when ingested over long periods as it accumulates in body tissues. "Fluoride is aknown carcinogen and teratogen, decreases fertility in women and is not approved by the FDA in theUnited States". Fluoride has beeen removed from various animal feeds because it was causing birthdefects in the offspring. Doctors first used botulinum toxin for health conditions and as a muscle relaxant to treat many muscle disorders (E.g. lazy eye and uncontrolled blinking) before realizing its cosmetic potential. The BOTOX® Procedure Botox® is the trade name of botulinum toxin ‘type a’. Botox® rejuvenation is a simple procedure in which cosmetic surgeons carefully inject a low dose of toxin into an individual’s facial muscles, causing temporary relaxation of the injected muscles. Cosmetic uses for Botox® include treating common signs of aging, such as, the horizontal lines on the forehead, vertical lines between the eyebrows and on the bridge of the nose, fine lines or crows feet at the corners of the eyes and the muscle bands often visible on the neck – otherwise known as “turkey neck”.
