One of the most popular of varieties is the peel-off mask, which can be removed in one piece after drying. These masks have the added bonus of removing all dead skin cells on the surface, thereby revealing a glowing complexion. Unfortunately, too few of us experience the pleasures of peel-off facial masks on a regular basis because they seem like a frivolous expense. If you want to pamper your skin despite a tight budget, you can make a homemade version of this cosmetic delight using only a few simple ingredients. How Peel-Off Masks Work The peel-off facial masks available in stores and those you can make yourself work in identical ways. They are applied to the skin in liquid form, allowed to dry, and then peeled off. As they dry, they bond with dulling dead skin, dirt, and oil. Thus, when the mask comes off, these substances are lifted off with it. A peel-off mask even has the power to unclog pores, as it can grab oily blockages like a magnet. (To get this effect, simply place warm wet washcloths on your skin for fifteen minutes prior to applying the mask.) To put it simply, using a peel-off facial mask is a quick and easy way to bring your most beautiful skin to the surface. Ingredients The basic peel-off mask looks like a gooey mess thanks to its combination of ingredients. In fact, it is virtually identical to the recipe for Jell-O since all you need is some plain gelatin and your fruit (or vegetable) juice of choice. For this reason, you will probably only wish to make enough for one serving at a time. The remaining mask, although it will make a fine snack, will not be usable again for cosmetic purposes. For this recipe, you will need plain gelatin, which is available at almost every grocery store. As for the juice, it should be chosen based upon your skin type and facial needs. Later in this article, you will find detailed information on the best choices for dry and oily skin types. If your skin is normal, you can choose any one that you like. Recipe Once you have assembled your ingredients, you can prepare to make your facial mask. There is no need to choose a storage container because any leftovers need to be discarded. If you are having a party, you can double this recipe to share with a friend. To begin, sprinkle a tablespoon of plain gelatin into a half-cup of juice. Place the mixture, which should be in a heat-resistant bowl, in the microwave and heat it until the gelatin disperses completely into the juice. Transfer your mask to the fridge until it starts to become firmer, a process, which usually takes twenty minutes to a half-hour. You are looking for a thick consistency, but not one that is completely set up. At this point, your gel mask is ready to use. Dry Skin Additives Now that you know how to make a basic mask, it is time to discuss additives for specific skin types. Some fruit juices are specifically suited to dry skin types. This is because their acidity helps to eat away dry skin without leaching moisture from living cells. Most beginners suffering from dry skin prefer apple juice, both because it is easy to buy and because the excess can always be used for consumption. However, if you have a juicer or food processor, you can experiment with other fruit juices. To do this, Place a cup of your chosen fruit in the machine, puree it until it is a fine pulp, and strain off the liquid to add to the mask recipe. Lemon juice is also wonderful in this mask, especially for skin that falls in the "normal to dry" range, but be sure to cut it with another juice or water because it is too powerful by itself. Raspberry, papaya, pear, and peach juices are also highly beneficial for dry skin. Oily Skin Additives If you have oily skin, you will appreciate the effects of a fruit juice capable of restoring the skin's natural acid mantle and getting rid of excess sebum. The most effective fruit juice for these benefits is lemon juice. It will decrease oily skin's shine and will make the pores appear smaller. Other citrus fruits like orange juice, grapefruit juice, and lime juice also have this power. If you choose one of these, be extremely careful to avoid the delicate eye area when applying your mask. Finally, if you have a carton of carrot juice in the fridge, try adding a bit of it to your mask. While it may smell strange, this astringent juice will decrease surface oils on your skin. Usage Recommendations When you are ready to start using your gelatin creations, keep these usage recommendations in mind. Unless you have extremely oily skin, do not use your masks more than once every three days. Otherwise, you run the risk of over-exfoliating, which can cause stress to the facial skin. Apply only a sheer layer to your face so that it will not take all day to dry. Avoid the eyes, eyebrows, hairline, and any other areas where it will be hard to remove the mask. Now, sit down and relax for twenty minutes while the mask dries. You will know it is ready when it does not feel tacky any longer. Finally, simply peel off the mask and discard it. You can also splash your face with cool water to tighten the pores and remove any lingering residue. Using a peel-off facial mask is a wonderful way to keep your face glowing and smooth. Since the ingredients are probably already in your cabinets, you can whip one up any time you like for an instant facial pick-me-up.
