Bady CareScarification: My favorite form of bady art Scarification: My favorite form of bady art At A Glance Author Outsider Contact jackhell@hotmail.com Artist Myself Studio Kitchen Location Ashland, Oregon Scarification: I started out doing scarification on myself doing stylizedRunes on my arm and my stomach and my calves. It took some experimenting tofind a depth that wasn't too deep or too shallow. I found that a 1/8-inch isthe best depth and began marking the scalpel to help guide it until I becamecomfortable with the cutting. The Second problem I came across is that Ihave fair skin and don't scar heavily due to the small amount of keloids. Tomake up for that I researched scarification practices and found that ash is agood way to agitate the skin into a scar, I use sage ash. I suppose getting atan would probably also work. And yet a third problem, I found out thelame way that if you have 2 cuts too close together then the scars might mergeand ruin the piece, which I managed to "fix" by cutting off the skin where Ididn't want it to be and applying Neosporin. Let me get startedexplaining the scar on my stomach. Its of the rune Teiwaz which is asymbol of warrior. It is about three years old, and has only had a fewproblems. It was also the third scar I did on myself. The process I used tokeep it sterile was to first get a brand new scalpel (that can be a painsometimes), I than proceeded to sterilize it by boiling the blade for justover an hour because I don't have an autoclave. Then used rubbing alcohol tosterilize the skin in the area I planned to do the scar and let it dry (thatalso tightens the skin a bit, which makes the cutting easier). I alsoremembered the latex gloves and went through about three pairs during thesterilization process (I wanted to stay away from cross contamination). I hada hard time cutting deep enough at first, I think that comes from theself-preservation instinct, so I had to go over the scar again to cut it deepenough to leave a good scar. I also recommend having something on hand to swabthe blood; I used a paper towel, which probably undid my attempts atsterilization. I had about a 1/4 pound of sage ash that I had been saving forawhile for scars and rubbed it into the cuts, I used up a good portion of theash (mostly on the surrounding skin) and was left with a black scabafterwards. Most of the ash came out due to bleeding and picking the scab afew times a day to irritate the cut into a thick scar. I'd say it was boutthree weeks before I considered it healed although I still took care of itjust to keep on the safe side After I became comfortable with theprocess and felt I was competent, through a combination of practicing onmyself and on leather, I started doing work for friends who thought I wasdoing a good job. The one problem they had was remembering to pick the scabs.I ended up doing some intricate Celtic knots and some Japanese symbols withpretty good results. The first scar I ever did on anyone else was aCeltic cross that took up a decent area on the back. I used the samesterilization process again except I had access to an autoclave this time so Iautoclaved instead of boiled. The person who got the cuts drew the design ofthe Celtic knot. It took up a lot of space on the back and was filled withvarious other designs; I suppose maybe it was more of a frame for everythingthat was inside. I used freshly cleaned terry cloths to swab the blood until Iwas done and used a towel and got a nice design on the towel from it. Thesubject had a mixture of marijuana ash and sage ash to rub in. Apparently someTHC was left in the ash and leeched into the blood because the subject claimedto have gotten high, I think that it more likely endorphins, because I had asimilar experience. That scar turned out pretty decent I'm thinking it wasbecause the person had a decent tan. I'm glad I had learned from my previousexperience with the scars merging so I had remembered to cut shallower in someplaces where the detail was high. And in the end I think it was probably thebest piece I had ever done. I still do scarification on myself andperform the art on others. Scarification almost landed me a job but thebusiness went under before I was hired. The Scarification got me interested inbranding and body piercing neither of which I am comfortable doing onothers. As a last note I would recommend that a better environment beused than a kitchen. Return to Scarification experiences Botox Crows Feet FrownBotox to Treat Wrinkles Many of uswould love to improve our appearance, but dont have either the time or the inclinationto have cosmetic surgery. Fortunately, there are things that we can do to make amazing changes without surgeryor a recovery period. In this section I will explain treatment ofwrinkles and creases of the upper face and then wrinkles and creases ofthe lower face. The two areas aretreated differently. Botox Crows Feet Frown Lines Forehead Wrinkles Theseproblems can make you look look like you are frowning, angry, tired, sad or generally older. Originallyused by ophthalmologists to treat nervous twitching of the eyelid, BOTOX has been used successfully for wrinkling since 1982. Botox isactually a very tiny amount of botulism that is placed into the wrinkled area toflatten it. Some people wonder about using Botox. The best analogy I can thinkof is the story of Foxglove. TheFoxglove Story F oxglove is a plant found throughout Europe and, because of its beauty, was brought to North America. The extract of Foxglove is highly poisonous. This extract was the poison used in Medieval Times for the ritual known as Trial By Ordeal! In 1775 Scottish doctor William Withering, who had written a book on botany, had a very sick patient. After telling him he was going to die, the patient went to a local gypsy, who gave him an herbal remedy. Foxglove He immediately got better! Dr. Withering demanded that the gypsy show him the remedy and was surprised to discover it to be Foxglove, a plant he thought was poisonous! After working on this remedy for 8 years, Dr. Withering brought Foxglove to the world of medicine only the name was of the medicine was changed. Instead of Foxglove, a name known as a poison, this extract became known as Digitalis, one of the most important heart medicines of today! Botox has asimilar story. This medicine relaxes muscles. Creases and wrinkles are often caused by hyperactive facial muscles. A common misconception is that thedoctor should inject every wrinkle. In fact, Botox is used to treat the musclescausing the wrinkles. Relaxing the surrounding muscles takes the"crunch" off and allows the skin to smooth. Botox is injected with a very tiny needle. AfterBotox injection, themuscles will relax and the skin will smooth out over about 5 days. The effectusually lasts about six months, and can be repeated when needed. There are very few sideeffects to this procedure. While allergy to any medicine is possible, it is rarewith Botox . While a small amount of browor lid droop ispossible, it is unusual and can usually be avoided by not treating the areajust above the outer portion of the brow. If it does happen, it goes away byitself. Originallyused for treating nervous twitch of the eyelid muscles, it was discovered thatthe crows feet, frown lines and forehead creases can be flatteneddramatically. Neck Bands can sometimes be helped also. Botox isone of the most popular cosmetic mini-treatments today. This procedure canbe done on a lunch break and requires no anesthesia or recovery. Overall, thevast majority of patients love this "quick fix" and return for a Botox boost as soon as the wrinkles begin to reappear! Collagen Weakening the muscle action of the forehead creases, crow's feet and frownlines with BOTOX is tremendously successful. This can not be done aroundthe mouth or cheeks. If these muscles were weakened, the smile and the expressionsof the face would be changed. Fortunately, collagen can be used here. Creases from below the eyelids to the chin are best treated by fillingthem. Even a facelift can not flatten deep nasolabial grooves. The most popular choicesfor filling them are Fat and COLLAGEN . For large amounts, Fat can be harvested with a small suction procedure and reinjected. This fat, likecollagen, will mostly dissolve over several months. For smaller amounts COLLAGEN is quicker, easier and requires no donor site. COLLAGEN is a Bovine (Cow) protein. Somepeople can be allergic to it and therefore a small skin test and a four week wait aremandatory. If no reaction occurs, a short office visit can result in fuller lips, smoothernasolabial folds, filled wrinkles and scars, reduced smokers' lines and a reduction inmany other skin defects. While sometimes patients feel that their COLLAGEN did not last, we have found that the cause of this is almost always under-treatment tostart with. If a patient says that he or she would like 1cc of COLLAGEN and would like to treat their lips and nasolabial folds, they will unquestionably complainthat the effect lasted for only a few weeks. In fact, the "effect" they saw wasslight swelling from the injection, not adequate correction with COLLAGEN . We find that to treat the lips usually requires 1-1.5cc and each deepnasolabial fold requires 1.5cc. If treated properly, the results can be dramatic and lastseveral months. Subsequent treatments require less because some of the initial treatmentusually remains. This procedure can be done on a lunch break and requires no anesthesia orrecovery. Contact Information Joel R. Dry Skin Moira FordyceFHA : The Patient Education Forum : Dry Skin Text Size: decrease - increase Search: -- Search: Patient Education Forum Dry Skin Moira Fordyce MB ChB, MD, FRCPE, AGSF, Stanford University School of Medicine, San Francisco, CA Content Expert: Solomon Liao MD, University of California, Irvine, CA As we get older, our skin becomes dryer, thinner, and less elastic, with fewer sweat and oil glands to moisten and protect it. It tears and bruises more easily, and scaling, itching and cracks can be troublesome. Oily skinned elders do better with aging changes than those with normal and dry skin. Here is information about dry skin, and what you can do about it. Provide Feedback Download in PDF format What causes dry skin? Aging itself. The medical term for dry skin is xerosis. Some people suffer life-long dry skin due to a condition that runs in families called ichthyosis (fish-scale skin). Dry, itchy skin can be a symptom of disease, for example, thyroid disorder, diabetes mellitus, or kidney disease. Longstanding skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis can cause dry, itchy skin. Some medicines, both prescription and non-prescription, can make dryness and itching worse. Where does dry skin occur commonly on the body? Dry skin can affect any part of the body, particularly exposed areas. Legs, elbows, hands and forearms often develop it. Mid back between the shoulder blades What makes dry skin worse? Hot, or cold, dry, windy weather Air conditioning in summer and heating in winter - moisture is removed from the air Sitting too close to a fire or a fan heater Swimming, especially in strongly chlorinated water Not drinking enough water or other liquids. However, check with your health care provider before increasing your fluids if you are on medicines for blood pressure or to get rid of fluid (diuretics). Too much sun Smoking Long, hot, frequent showers or baths can remove natural oils from the skin Deodorant soaps, bath salts, bubble baths or any preparation containing a detergent can irritate the skin and make dry skin worse. Any preparation with a strong perfume is best avoided if you have dry skin. Preparations containing lanolin can irritate the skin - many people become allergic to this substance, so you might have to avoid it. How can I protect my skin from getting dry? Bathing Techniques Avoid bathing in very hot or very cold water Daily bathing or showering is not necessary in cooler climates. In hot weather if you do sweat, you can freshen up with warm water alone. Limit your bath or shower to 5-10 minutes Avoid vigorous rubbing with a washcloth when cleansing Rinse your skin thoroughly with warm (not hot) water After your bath or shower, pat the skin dry; don't rub it. Wrapping yourself in a thick toweling bathrobe then proceeding to the next step may even be better for the skin than using a towel. Skin Applications After you bathe, soothe your skin by applying moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp - this traps more surface moisture than applying it to totally dry skin. You might need to apply moisturizer several times a day If you have severely dry skin, after you bathe apply oil to the still moist skin first, then apply a moisturizing cream on top of it. Repeat this process at bedtime. Avoid steam baths and saunas - sweating can leach out natural skin oils Avoid liquid soap - it is more drying to the skin than a bar of the same soap. A mild bar soap like Dove or Olay is gentle to the skin. Avoid shower gels and deodorant soaps - they are hard on dry skin. If your skin is very dry it is better not to use any kind of soap. An unscented, emollient preparation such as Cetaphil, or a generic version of this, cleanses and soothes dry skin. Avoid skin preparations with alcohol in them Don't rub your skin when applying cream or lotion - rubbing can trigger itching. Sun Exposure Avoid direct sun, especially between 12 noon and 3 pm Apply sunscreen liberally to all exposed areas 30 minutes before every sun exposure, and even on foggy or cloudy days. (Don't forget your ears, hands, the back of your neck.) Reapply the sunscreen often. Look for a UVA/UVB sunscreen with Parsol 1789, titanium oxide, or zinc oxide, and with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher Since sunscreen cuts down formation of vitamin D-like substances in the skin, make sure you have enough vitamin D in your diet (or take a multivitamin with vitamin D) to keep your bones strong. Cover up, wear a shady hat or carry a parasol when you're in the sun. Healthy Lifestyle Don't smoke! Smoking damages the skin. Nicotine constricts blood vessels, including the tiny capillaries that feed the skin. This deprives the skin of the oxygen and nutrients it needs for good health. Get enough sleep - skin cells renew themselves best during sleep. Exercise! This boosts circulation and encourages blood flow to all parts of the body. Skin, heart, lungs, bones and brain all benefit from regular exercise, and it nourishes the skin from within. Increase the moisture in the air of your home or workplace by placing a bowl of water on a heater in winter, or by using a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier. Drink lots of water (unless your health care provider has told you not to) Eat oily fish such as tuna and salmon every week. Other Hints Wear cotton gloves inside waterproof gloves to protect your hands for all household tasks involving water, detergents or chemicals. For laundry, use environmentally friendly detergents Rinse all clothes and bedclothes thoroughly. Avoid fabric softeners, especially in the dryer. Keep irritating fabrics away from your skin. Don't wear clothing made of wool or other "scratchy" fabrics Use cotton sheets on your bed. I am on a limited budget. How can I find a good, low cost moisturizer? Read labels and compare ingredients. Most name brand cleansers, moisturizers and sunscreens have less expensive generic copies. Learn the difference between ointments, creams, lotions and humectants. They all moisturize. Look for the following ingredients when you read labels: Ointments have an oily base, so are greasy and best used at bedtime. Creams contain more oil than lotions so are more effective for dry skin Lotions feel lighter, but have more water than oil so are less effective than creams or ointments, and need to be applied more often Humectants are a class of moisturizer that does not contain oil and may be labeled oil-free. They contain glycerin, propylene glycol, urea, hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, and lactic acid. Humectants are effective and, some, such as alpha hydroxy acids, actually improve the skin's ability to retain moisture. Avoid lanolin (which may cause an allergic reaction), vitamins, essential fatty acids, collagen, elastin, and keratin, as they have little benefit to the skin, but add to the cost of the moisturizer. Baby oil is an effective, low cost skin treatment, applied to the skin during or after showering or bathing, or layered under moisturizer. Be sure not to slip if you are using any oily preparation in the bath or shower. White petroleum jelly (the base of many ointments) in a thin layer can soothe dry skin. A layer on hands in bed at night under thin cotton gloves can be effective. Similar treatment works for dry skin on feet, under fine cotton socks. Plain white Crisco is an effective remedy for dry skin. Put some in a pretty jar, use it as above, and pretend it is an expensive cream When should I see my health care provider? If you itch all over your body but there is no obvious cause. If your dry skin does not respond to the suggestions above, or gets worse. Special ointments or creams by prescription might be needed to treat it. If your skin is badly broken or you have sores from scratching If dryness, itching or other skin discomfort keeps you from sleeping If, when you examine your skin, you discover a new growth or discoloration that lasts longer than 2 weeks, or if an existing mole or discoloration changes in any way.
