In turn, we take their question to an expert and try to help out. Got a beauty question? Ask Ivana This week's beauty question comes from Simon. Simon asks: How often should one exfoliate their face? Is moisturizer necessary after exfoliation? To help answer Simon's question, we asked Ella Henderson, Manager at the elmspa in Toronto her expert opinion Dear Reader, The frequency of exfoliation of one's face is dependent upon the specific skin type of each individual. Exfoliation is an essential component of the facial cleansing routine. By removing dry, dead skin cells and loosening surface blackheads, the skin's natural oils are allowed to flow freely to the surface and promote proper oxygenation of the pores leading to improved skin health and radiance. The type of exfoliant used should be tailored to the skin type. For example, an individual with oily skin should include exfoliation in their facial cleansing routine two to three times each week. Combination and oily skins benefit from a slightly more potent exfoliating product that is infused with raw ingredients, such as Lemon Myrtle, known for its powerful enzymatic action that provides antibacterial and anti-viral properties, that aid to control sebum levels. Combination skin can be treated to an exfoliant approximately twice a week. Dry skins require exfoliation less frequently so once a week is all that is recommended. For individuals with combination or normal to dry skin it is important to use a gentle and hydrating exfoliant such as Li'Tya Herbal Kelp Intensive Hydrating Polish. After exfoliation, it is vital to restore natural moisture levels. A high quality organic moisturizer should be used morning and evening to protect the skin against free radicals while improving elasticity, slowing down the aging process and keeping the skin firm. Organic ingredients are more easily absorbed into the skin enhancing the properties of the active ingredients. A moisturizing mask applied weekly to the face and neck boosts the skin's hydration levels and helps to improve the tone and even out the skin's texture. The delicate skin tissue surrounding the eye's contour also needs special attention and protection. Applying a serum to regenerate the cells to damp skin can counteract the aging effects.
