So pull out the lip balms. Set up the humidifier. And start exfoliating. Advertisement "This is the time of year when people get very, very dry," said Anna Porrazzo, owner of Synergy Spa in Raleigh, N.C. The real problem isn't so much the chilly weather, though. Rather, it's the low humidity outside and the extra heat that gets cranked up at home, in the car and at offices to stay warm inside. Together, they work double time to dry out the skin, accentuating fine lines and causing skin to itch. There are plenty of products on the market these days to help combat dryness. The solutions are as simple as putting some Vaseline on the lips to spending big money on specialized creams that work beneath the top layer of skin to keep it hydrated. No matter the cost, the best way to start getting your body ready for winter is with a good round of exfoliation. "Nothing you put on your skin is going to work unless you exfoliate," said Fiquet Bailey, owner of Luxe Apothecary in Raleigh. That means getting out the exfoliating scrubs and gloves and using them in the shower, said Diane Dennis, managing partner of Iatria Day Spa in Raleigh. For those who really want to get off the dead cells, especially on hard-to-reach places like your back, she recommends a full body exfoliation, which most local spas can perform. The face is a little more delicate. Porrazzo recommends using a glycolic acid lotion to help remove the dead skin cells. Even the lips need to be exfoliated. Bailey recommends gently rubbing them with a dry, soft toothbrush to get off any flakes and dead cells. The next step: moisturize. A lot. "You have to stay hydrated," Bailey said. In the shower use a creamy, shea butter-based shower gel or soap to help keep skin from drying out, she says. Watch how hot you run your shower. "As tempting as it may be in the cold months of winter, avoid hot water," Bailey said. "Hot water strips the skin of naturally occurring oils. Opt for lukewarm water instead." As soon as you get out of the shower, put on moisturizers. Warm, damp skin absorbs lotions and oils more easily. You might change to a richer, more hydrating moisturizer. Bailey suggests looking for products with sodium hyaluronate, an ingredient that attracts and holds moisture to the skin. For faces, she recommends an MD Skincare sodium hyaluronate mask. Porrazzo said these harder-working lotions penetrate the skin, helping to repair as well as hydrate. "When your skin gets really dry it usually has to do with the fact that you're having trouble keeping moisture in the skin," Porrazzo said. As for lips, Dennis said most women want to protect their lips but also want color. A good solution: Blistex's Lip Tone, which has an SPF 15 and a hint of color. Or simply put Vaseline under or on top of lipstick for a protective barrier against wind and cold. "It's cheap and inexpensive and it's not something you have to go to a spa to get," she said.
