Given its mildness, the Gentle formula isn't the best choice for removing make-up. However, Cetaphil's regular Daily Cleanser (*est. $6.75/8 ounces) is also good for all skin types and is strong enough to remove makeup without scrubbing. The difference between the two formulations is that the stronger one lacks the word "Gentle" in its description. • Neutrogena Deep Clean Facial Cleanser (*est. $6/6.7 ounces) >> Where to buy If you don't have sensitive skin and you prefer something even stronger to remove makeup and dirt, Neutrogena's Deep Clean Facial Cleanser contains hydroxy acid, which is claimed to penetrate deep into pores. Reviews warn that it might be too strong for sensitive skin; however, some consumers say that it clears up blemishes and doesn't dry skin out. Deep Clean comes in gel, cream, or cloth form. Cetaphil, however, costs less, doesn't dry-out skin and doesn't contain potential irritants like menthol, found in Neutrogena Deep Clean. • Mary Kay Timewise 3-in-1 Cleanser (*est. $18/4.5 ounces) >> Where to buy If you wonder how your neighborhood beauty consultant's products compare with store-bought cleansers, May Kay's Timewise 3-in-1 Cleanser is well-liked by consumers for leaving skin soft and feeling fresh. The anti-aging formula has vitamin E, retinyl palmitate for firming, and microbeads to smooth skin. However, reviews say that anti-aging claims for cleansers are suspect, since the necessary ingredients are washed down the drain before they have a chance to work. Cetaphil cleans as well, say reviews, and costs less. • Olay Daily Facials (*est. $4.50/30-pack) >> Where to buy Experts and consumers have long favored Olay products. The Daily Facials, which come as individual cloths, are certainly convenient, removing makeup and cleaning the face with one swipe of a disposable towelette. Numerous varieties are available for different skin types and conditions. Convenience is the selling feature here, since other options are less expensive and just as effective. • Proactive Renewing Cleanser (*est. $40/4 ounces with toner and lotion) >> Where to buy Although reviews say a gentle, water-soluble cleanser like the Cetaphil is just as good for acne-prone skin as more expensive products, Proactive is a popular option for those with acne. Proponents say it clears up blemishes within a few days. The secret ingredient is benzoyl peroxide, which some users say can be very irritating to sensitive skin. A gentle formula with salicylic acid is also available upon request from the company. However, you have to buy Proactive's products in a three-piece system, including toner and lotion, and you have to agree to subsequent automatic shipments of the same products every two months. What are the green links? Updated November 2004 There are hundreds of facial cleansers on the market that claim to do everything from clear up acne to erase wrinkles. But do they really work? We turned to the highly rated book, "Don't Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me," by Paula Begoun, as well as reviews by Makeup Diva, Makeup 101, Better Homes & Gardens, and numerous consumer opinion sites to find out which cleansers are worth their weightand price. Consumer Reports magazine has not covered facial cleansers. In the mid 1990s, Serious Skin Care was sold only through the Home Shopping Network (products are now available online as well). The Federal Trade Commission got involved when it turned out that some of the Home Shopping Network's claims about Serious Skin Care's anti-acne products "didn't reflect the typical or ordinary experience of product users." In addition, many dermatologists and other physicians have started their own skin care lines for profit, but it's wise to not assume these products are any better than the cleansers at your local drugstore. Paula Begoun, in her very revealing book "Don't Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me," cites one such physician who was quoted in the New York Times as saying, "Promise them an unlined face, and you can sell them anything." The American Medical Association has issued guidelines advising physicians not to sell health-related products for profit, recognizing the conflict of interest this creates. Begoun also points out that the phrases "Dermatologist Tested" and "Dermatologist Approved" are meaningless, since there's no standard for what these meanthey often only indicate that one or two dermatologists tried a product at the manufacturer's request and liked it how it felt. Along with a cleaner, you also need a daily facial moisturizer.
