The goal of the therapy is to reduce muscle spasm and pain. This potent neurotoxin is produced by Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that causes food poisoning (botulism). There are seven known types of C. botulinum toxin, but only types A (BOTOX Cosmetic) and B (Myobloc) are used as medical treatments. Physical or occupational therapy usually is undertaken to stretch and restore normal muscle function. Some patients develop antibodies to the toxin over time, rendering the treatment ineffective. Side Effects Botulinum toxin therapy is a safe and effective treatment when given in very small amounts by a qualified neurologist. Some patients experience temporary weakness in the group of muscles being treated. For example, ptosis (drooping eyelid) can develop after treating blepharospasm. Flu-like symptoms develop in some, but rarely. Holly says she uses Botox as a preventative method rather than to remove facial lines and wrinkles. She has been seeing Dr Margo Campion for her Botox and Restylane for the past 2 years. She is heading into the clinic for another round of injections that can cost up to $1,000 in less than an hour. Dr Campion needs to ascertain how much Holly needs to be injected with, so asks her to squint, and smile and lift her brows as much as she can. She needs to mark Holly with a coloured pen, to make sure she places the Botox in the right areas on her face. Botox is a trade name for Botulinim Toxin A, which is a form of Botulism, a food poison what causes paralysis in large doses. It was first used medically to control eye spasms and facial tics, but quickly spread to the cosmetic industry. Botox blocks the signals that tell the muscle to contract, thereby smoothing out wrinkles and frown lines. Each treatment can last up to 6 months but fades naturally over time. Anaesthetic injections are given before Restylane is injected into Holly’s lips. Restylane has replaced Collagen as the dermal filler of choice. It’s a biodegradable gel based on hyaluronic acid, a natural occurring substance which plumps up the lips for up to 12 months. After Dr Campion has finished injecting, the Botox in her forehead, crowsfeet and smile lines have given an instant result that Holly is very happy with. Her lips however are red and swollen with the Restylane, but Holly knows this will subside over a few days. After a facial to help re-hydrate her skin, Holly is back to work after a few days feeling confident with her looks. She makes a guest appearance on the Footy Show, followed by a shoot for FHM magazine. The average range for treatments however is 30-55 years. Botox comes in a vial, which has been reconstituted with Saline and one vial can last several patients. Restylane is pre-packaged in sterile syringes and it comes in 0.4ml costing up to $360 +GST and 0.7ml costing up to $550 +GST. Bruising and swelling are the most common side effects but the average healing time for Botox is 12 hours and for Restylane is 24 hours.
