They’re photochromic. So, like my sunglasses, this lotion has a photochromic dye mixed in. As you lie in the sun, whatever lotion that's directly in the sun gets dark, but the lotion that isn't, doesn't. See? So, it gives you a self-leveling tan. Andsome neat effects, too. Put your hand on your stomach for a minute, and get a cool afterimage. Lie in the shadow of a picket fence, and you'll get stripes. As with the sunglasses, the afterimages are good for about ten minutes of walking around before they fade. pluterday , Sep 12 2003 [ link ] make it in camoflage colors too ...reactive to the amount of light hitting the surface of the surface applied to ... all reptile-like ... sounds like somehting DeathNinja might dig (?). However, repeated stimuli can compromise the skins ability to act as a barrier, leading to what many would term sensitive skin. The common perception of sensitive skin is that it is skin that is easily irritated. Although not clearly defined medically, sensitive skin tends to become more irritated or react more (e.g. redness, itching) than normal skin. For some people, their skin always seems sensitive. Whilst for others, the amount of sensitivity will vary. If you believe you have sensitive skin, some of the things that can trigger a reaction include: sudden emotional / psychological stress exposure to common irritants at home or at work (e.g. nickel, insecticides, perfumes) a new pet at home drying effects of cold air, wind or the sun certain flowers and plants (e.g. chrysanthemums, pine trees, geraniums) pollen and mould spores wearing wool next to the skin Below is a checklist prepared by toxicologist Dr. John Lister, of possible causes to consider if you suddenly develop sensitive skin. As there are so many potential causes, it may help to go through this list with your GP or Practice Nurse to help try and identify what may be causing the sensitivity. Dr. John Lister Dr. John Lister is an Independent Consultant in the science of skin biology and dermatology. He has over 25 years experience in this field and is the author of many publications in medical and technical literature. Potential causes of sensitive skin Sensitive skin can be caused by any number of reasons. The most common things that may cause sensitive skin are listed below. Sudden stress in life is often overlooked and can be a potential trigger for sensitive skin, even promoting a bout of eczema in some people. Exposing the skin to common allergens or irritants such as nickel (in coins and jewellery), chemicals such as insecticides and pesticides in the home and garden, fragrances and preservatives in beauty products, wood resin or rubber among many other things. A change in the weather and climate. Dry winter weather and even over-exposure to the drying effects of the sun can lead to loss of skin moisture, making the skin dry and so more prone to reactions to certain substances. A new pet in the house, or an animal that is shedding more hair than usual. Pet hair and skin scales can be a problem for many people who have sensitive skin. Have you changed your favourite brand of soap, shampoo, bath foam, washing powder, skin cream or lotion? A new ingredient may be irritating the skin. Some foods can trigger an allergic reaction, which sometimes results in rashes. Among the most common, although only in a small number of people, are eggs, shell-fish, strawberries, nuts, nut oils and milk products. Sometimes new woollen clothing, especially coarser wool, can irritate the skin, leading to sensitivity. Breathing in pollen, especially from grass and trees, can not only result in an asthma attack, but also skin rashes in some people. Similarly moulds in a damp and musty room can release millions of spores that can make the skin sensitive, itchy and irritated. New medications whether taken by mouth or applied to the skin can trigger sensitivity and rashes in some people. Many flowers and plants in the garden, such as chrysanthemums, figs, geraniums, pine needles and others that can irritate sensitive skin. Clear Up Skin Care Check out the Clear Skin Regimen for a free, non-commercial acne treatment program. Clear Skin Regimen Medications Acne scars Success stories Frequently Asked Questions Adult acne Message boards My acne treatment history Back acne Picture gallery Product/treatment ratings Links Acne.org is teaming up with Clear Up Skin Care, the country's first non-profit outreach program to promote clear skin and self-esteem among adolescents. Volunteer teachers from Clear Up Skin Care visit middle school health classes in the Los Angeles area to talk about acne, acne treatments, and positive coping skills. Acne.org donates a proven step-by-step regimen to clear the skin, and I am personally donating hundreds of sample tubes of Clear Skin Regimen Gel . Recently, due to strong Clear Skin Regimen Gel sales I was also able to donate another $1000. Together, Acne.org and Clear Up Skin Care aim to relieve the shame of acne by offering an open, comfortable environment for teens to learn about and discuss acne with volunteer educators. We hope that the program will spread throughout the country. If you would like to learn more about Clear Up Skin Care, visit their web site or write DebiByrnes@clearupskincare.org . The organization is looking for volunteer educators as well as monetary support. Clear Up Skin Care is a non-profit organization and depends on donations to keep it going strong. Please consider donating to the organization through the paypal link below. All donations are fully tax deductible. Clear Up Skin Care's program description and mission are below: Program Description The Clear Up Skin Care program develops and disseminates information about acne, how it affects teens both physically and emotionally, and teaches methods through which teenagers can build their self-esteem and increase their feelings of self-worth. We became a non-profit in 2002. We are starting off slowly, at Madison Middle School in North Hollywood, CA, where we give a series of three presentations to 7th and 8th grade students during their health class. The first presentation provides students an opportunity to learn about the causes and treatment of acne. The second and third presentations explore the connection between physical appearance and self-esteem. Currently there is a total lack of information available to youth about skin care and acne prevention in the public school health curriculum. Ms. Venus Lindo, a counselor at Madison Middle School states, “The Clear Up Skin Care program is a beneficial experience for early adolescents. They are able to obtain information they would not get any other way." The presentations offer free, informative, and accurate information about acne and building self-esteem. The program empowers teens to understand that they can control how they take care of themselves, which will help them feel positive about how they look, how they feel, and what they are able to achieve. Clear Up Skin Care is beginning to fulfill an important need as demonstrated by a 7 th grader’s comments about the program, “I learned a lot about skin care and self-esteem. Thank you – you really helped me.” Mission Being a teenager is not easy; it is a phase we endure during which everything seems to be in a continual state of flux – emotions, friendships, and self-esteem. If acne is added to the mix, the life of an adolescent can seem almost unbearable. We developed Clear Up Skin Care to help teenagers learn more about acne and how to care for their skin. But more importantly, we help them realize that everyone has aspects about themselves that they wish they could improve. As we grow and mature, these aspects can also come and go. What is most important is that we like who we are inside. When we are able to accomplish this, we are able to accomplish almost anything we desire. Try Aveda Daily Light Guard SPF 15 (PHOTO: KENNETH WILLARDT) Your personal plan for getting gorgeous skin and hair this season Smart Sun Protection Find your skin type below and learn how to save your face from harmful UV rays. Normal Skin Choose a sunscreen that's oil-free, yet hydrating enough that it can also work as your moisturizer. Try Bain de Soleil Oil-Free Protecteur Faces Sunscreen SPF 30. Oily/Combination Skin Use a formula that's oil-free and contains zinc oxide, which, in addition to blocking UV rays, has oil-absorbing properties, says Arielle Kauvar, M.D., a clinical associate professor of dermatology at the New York University School of Medicine. Try Skin Ceuticals Daily Sun Defense SPF 20. Dry Skin Layer an emollient sunscreen under or over your regular moisturizer. Try Estée Lauder SunBlock for Face SPF 30. Sensitive Skin Check labels for a formula that's PABA- and fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic and also contains a physical blocker (like micronized zinc oxide or titanium dioxide), which is less apt to cause irritation than a chemical one. Try Clarins Sun Care Cream Ultra Protection for Children SPF 30. The Best Sunscreen Advice No matter what your skin type is, ward off skin cancer and sun damage by following these top tips: Apply Yourself The American Cancer Society suggests spreading about a palmful of sunscreen on your body and a squirt the size of a silver dollar on your face. Reapply every 40 to 80 minutes if you're outdoors. Most of us apply less sunscreen than we should (and never reapply), which can render an SPF 30 only as effective as an SPF 7. Dry Off After Swimming The sun's rays penetrate wet skin more than dry skin, says Min-Wei Christine Lee, M.D., a dermatologic surgeon and director of the East Bay Laser & Skin Care Center in Walnut Creek, CA. Go Undercover Slather on sunscreen -- under your swimsuit. UV rays can get through most fabrics. Aim High If you're exercising outdoors, go for a sunscreen with an SPF of 45 or higher. In general, higher SPFs stay put best, says Dr. Lee. Do Your Research Check the labels of any oral drugs you're taking for warnings of photosensitivity. Some antibiotics, diabetes treatments and diuretics make you more prone to sun damage -- even while wearing sunscreen.
