The Anti-Aging Plan Research / Books / Diet Planner / Recipes / Nutrition / Orders / Biosphere 2 / Art Acitvities / Links Getting Started On The Anti-Aging Diet The Anti-Aging diet is based upon many years of animal experimentation at the U.C.L.A. Medical School and in other laboratories in other major universities in the United States. The diet consists of food combinations and menus arrived at by computer techniques so that the Recommended Daily Allowances of all important nutrients are approximated with minimal caloric intake . The program calls for gradual weight loss until you reach and remain at a new weight substantially below your "set point." Your set point is the weight toward which you naturally gravitate if you neither over- nor undereat. Your new weight point, if you are on the proper nutritive program, is your point of maximum metabolic efficiency, maximum health, and maximum life span. There are two methods for starting the diet. Some people are comfortable with sudden change, others with gradual change. The two different methods for starting the Anti-Aging Plan are geared to these two categories. The first, sudden method we call Rapid Reorientation; the second, slower method we call Gradual Reorientation. Briefly, with the Rapid Orientation method, we suggest that you eat only nutrient-rich low calorie meals for the first four weeks. This may be quite a radical change in your diet depending on your life style. All "empty" calories, virtually any food that is not nutrient dense should be eliminated. You will also need to monitor the nutritional value and calories of your meals with something like our THE DIET PLANNER software program. Limit your daily intake of calories to 1800, and make sure that all of your Recommended Daily Allowances are included. This will get you off to a good start, change your eating habits, and, unless you are quite a small person, induce substantial weight loss. The Gradual Orientation method eases you into this life-style change slowly. Rather than diving in and following the Plan rigourously every day; eat a nutrient-dense meal one day the first week, two days the second week, and so on. The rest of the day choose low calorie, healthy foods, but do not limit your intake. You may find that you lose weight by simply changing the quality of the foods you eat. In any case, by the end of two months you will be on a nutritient-dense diet. At this point, having transformed the quality of your diet, you may choose to begin to limit calories. Whether to limit your calories, and by how much initially, is a personal decision. Going for longevity on the Anti-Aging Plan requires caloric limitation. We advise, however, that you view this as a life-style change, and not a quick-fix program or a diet. With the Gradual Orientation method, test out your estimated daily calorie allowance. Over the two month period, weigh yourself once a week. You may need to adjust your calorie intake if you lose weight too quickly. More than 1% of weight loss from your set point per month could be too much. Your body needs time to adapt for maximum benefits. Once you are launched on a nutrient-dense low calorie diet, you may chose to begin to limit your calorie intake. Any person can physiologically adapt to this level of limitation and experience no physical hunger provided that nearly every calorie eaten is a nutrient-rich calorie. And what calorie level should you aim for eventually? Many people want exact guidelines, especially when it is a question of amounts and possible limitation of amounts. But there is no exactitude in the realm of human nutrition. Programs that identify you by your size, weight, exersise level, sex, etc, and then recommend a calorie level are misleading. The truth is, your personal body weight is not an average of a lot of bodies. Great individual variation exists, relating, for example, to metabolic efficiency. To reach your set point, with the Gradual Orientation method, take a year to reach your new weight. With the Rapid Orientation Method, you will lose weight quickly during the first month. The toxin is called Botulinum toxin, because it was first found in a sausage, and the Latin for sausage is "botulus". It goes under various names such as Botox, Dysport and Myobloc. We started using it only a few decades ago, but it's really caught on only in the last few years - so we haven't had it long enough to work out the side effects. There are hundreds of medical uses. For example, some people have difficulty in swallowing because the sphincter muscle at the bottom of their oesophagus (where it joins into the stomach) won't relax. The toxin can relax this muscle for a few months. Back in the old days, botulinum toxin's only claim to fame was causing food poisoning. But today, the poison that causes fatal food poisoning can help the food go down. The cosmetic use is to paralyse muscles in the face and stop you making wrinkles. All medications, including herbal ones, have side effects. The side effects of botulinum toxin tend to be local, and depend on where they are injected. They include difficulty in swallowing, headache, neck pain, drooping of the eyelids, nausea, and bruising or soreness of the injection site. Surprisingly, botulinum injections could sometimes make you grow wrinkles in untreated parts of the face where you didn't have wrinkles before. We don't know how this happens, but here's one theory. You take the botulinum injection, and temporarily paralyse some muscles. Your brain soon realises that a conditioned or programmed activity (e.g., frowning in annoyance, or lifting your forehead in surprise) is being blocked. This prabably activates other muscle groups, which try to maintain the conditioned activity. And so you lose wrinkles in one part of your face - but the untreated area grows new wrinkles that it never had before. Botulinum toxin can remove wrinkles - if they're caused by uptight muscles. But it will do absolutely nothing for wrinkles caused by the skin losing its elasticity. This happens naturally with ageing, smoking or sun exposure. In these cases, the sausage poison does no good - and can only do harm. When botulinum toxin was used to treat neck muscle spasm, the side effects included difficulty in swallowing (9-90%) and excessive muscle weakness (3-31%). In one case, the practitioner shoved the needle too deeply into the neck. The patient lost the ability to swallow, so she had to spend three weeks in the hospital being fed through a needle in her arm. In another case, a soap opera actress lost her voice for three months. The scriptwriters had to creatively write her out of the series until she recovered her voice. The toxin is applied by many small injections, rather than a few big ones. So in your forehead or brow, one tiny muscle above the right eye might get more juice than the corresponding tiny muscle above the left eye. For the next three months, one eyebrow could be up, while the other eyebrow could be down. Pain is another side effect. I got an email from a woman who had hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) on the hands and in the armpits. She wrote me: "I received 20 needles in each hand and 10 under each armpit - the pain was indescribable. The end result is that for me it decreased the sweating by about 70% for the hands and 95% for the underarms." So the treatment worked - but the pain of the injections was horrendous. 4.3% of people with hyperhydrosis who get the injections to reduce the sweating in the armpits get increased sweating in other areas. But they were so pleased with the drop in sweating in the armpits, that they continued with the treatments. Another problem is that botulinum toxin stops you from revealing your emotions. It freezes your face. Your face can no longer express its full and subtle range of emotions. You can no longer show love and hate, or grudging approval or wry amusement. How can you tell what a person's reaction is when they have frozen smiles, unfurrowable brows and paralysed cheek muscles? Some men have difficulty in trying to understand women. What difference will sausage poison make? Itwill make it even harder to read a woman's face, by destroying her ability to express many of her emotions. The film director, Baz Lurhmann, said about many female actors who use this poison, "... their faces really can't move properly." His fellow director, Martin Scorsese, agrees. Paul de Freitas, a London-based casting director, says that one third of the actors he sees have had botox injections. He said, "We waste a great deal of time weeding them out of auditions." Jeremy Zimmerman, another London casting agent says that men are also taking Botox, "I had to veto Mickey Rourke for the leading role in a British film. I had to explain to his agent that we wouldn't be using him because his face looked so frozen." Even so, its use is very common. Alex Kuczynski wrote in the New York Times, "the television industry depends on Botox as much as it does on pancake makeup and forgiving lighting."
