How to make your own face mask Make your own facial mask With all the wonderful cosmetic masks available these days, you'll never want for an exotic concoction to 'feed your face'. But why not give yourself one of the simplest, quickest DIY beauty treats and create your own? You may not think your kitchen is particularly well stocked, but chances are you have enough ingredients on hand to make a fabulous face mask. The only equipment you'll need is a mixing bowl, a fork, a wooden spoon and a few fresh ingredients. A blender or food processor will also be helpful if you want to save preparation time, but it isn't essential. Below are some basic masks for different skin types, but feel free to use your imagination when making your own. The advantage of homemade masks, of course, is that because they use fresh ingredients, they're free of additives and preservatives. You can even make yours 100 per cent organic if you choose. Enjoy these facial indulgences, which will help moisturise and exfoliate skin, leaving it with a healthy glow: Nourishing face mask for dry skin You will need: 2 oz/60g ripe avocado flesh 1 oz/25g orange juice 1 tsp/5g pure acacia honey 1 tsp/5g molasses 5 drops chamomile essential oil Put all the ingredients in a blender, or mash by hand in a bowl. Add extra orange juice if the mixture is too thick. Use your fingers to spread the mask over your face and neck and leave it on for at least 30 minutes, preferably longer, before removing. Use a warm flannel to rinse off the mask - this will help gently exfoliate skin as well as clean your face. This mask will keep for a day or two in the fridge if you don't use it all. Honey face mask for sensitive skin Warm a small pot of honey in a double boiler, then test a small amount on your hand to make sure it's not too hot. When warm, apply the honey generously over your entire face. Leave the mask on for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm, then cool water. Egg white mask for oily skin You will need: 1 egg white 6 drops witch hazel 6 drops lemon juice Whisk the egg white until it's stiff, and then add the remaining ingredients. Gently apply the mixture to your face, avoiding your eyes. Leave to dry for 15 minutes or so. Rinse well with warm water. Marie Antoinette's face mask This wife of King Louis XVI of France was a legendary beauty. Many believe that this mixture was the secret of her clear and glowing skin - so much so that it's still used as a popular facial treatment in France. This mask is suitable for all skin types, but the witch hazel and lemon can be harsh on dry skin. If you indulge, be sure to use your regular moisturiser afterwards. You will need: 1 egg Juice of one lemon 4 tbsp cup non-fat dry milk powder 1 tbsp witch hazel Put all the ingredients in a blender or food processor and mix well. Alternatively, you can blend them together by using a fork or a wire whisk. Apply the mixture to your face, neck and chest and allow it to dry for around 15 minutes. Use the remaining cream as a cleanser to remove the mask. Then, rinse your face thoroughly with warm water and pat dry. Butter face mask You will need: 1 tbsp unsalted butter, softened 1 large strawberry, mashed Or 1 2.5-cm (1 inch) slice of cucumber, chopped and rubbed through a sieve (for normal to dry skin) Or 1 tbsp lemon juice (for oily skin) Or 1 egg yolk (for dry skin) Beat the butter in a bowl, then beat in your chosen ingredient. Apply mask immediately and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove with a wet, warm washcloth. Butter is a good source of vitamin A, so it makes a perfect mask for sensitive, sunburned or damaged skin.

Possible pathogenesis: After a primary infection, herpes simplex virus became latent in the cranial and spinal sensory ganglia. Reactivation of the virus leads to replication of virus within the ganglion cells. Virus travels up and down the axons, induces an inflammatory response. Results in segmental demyelination presented as nerve paralysis. Incidence: between 15 - 40 / 100,000 population per year No evidence of racial predilection Incidence of Bell's palsy increases with age. Sexual predilection: Age 10 - 19 years, twice as common in women Age 40, 1.5 times more common in men. Pregnant women have 3.3 times more risk than nonpregnant women in the same age group. Diabetic patients: 4.5 times more likely to develop Bell's palsy. In 10% of the patients, a positive family history of Bell's palsy is present. Clinical features Sudden onset Full extent of the paralysis is usually reached in 1 to 14 days. Early phase: retroauricular pain, facial numbness, epiphora, parageusia, decreased tearing, and hyperacusis. Physical findings: Peripheral Facial paresis Hypoesthesia or dysesthesia of cranial nerves V and IX Motor paresis of cranial nerves IX and X Papillitis of the tongue. When severe retroauricular pain is present, Ramsay Hunt syndrome has to be considered. Differential diagnosis of VII weakness Bells' palsy, usually unilateral, 10% bilateral Differential of Unilateral Facial weakness Sarcoid Lyme's disease Neoplasm or mass Otitis media Trauma: skull fracture, facial injury Differential for bilateral VII palsy Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome Recurrent facial palsy with facial edema, Unilateral or bilateral Lingua plicata (Scrotal tongue) Mbius syndrome: Facial paresis with ophthalmoplegia Guillain-Barr Syndrome Myasthenia gravis Motor neuron disease Prognosis Complete recovery in 60 to 80% Prognostic factors: Age: younger patient has better prognosis. Incomplete paralysis tends to recover completely. If recovery begins between days 10 and 21, a satisfactory result is obtained. Presence of systemic diseases, such as diabetes, increases chance of unsatisfactory recovery. Treatment Acyclovir and prednisone produce better results than prednisone and placebo. Steroid: There is debate about the efficacy of steroids Seems to have strong support in the literature for the use of steroid. Steroids relieve pain and reduce denervation. Dosage: Prednisone is 1 mg/ kg of body weight daily for 15 days, tapering to 0 during the next 5 days. Acyclovir (Zovirax): Reduces pain and degree of denervation. Dosage: 200 mg five times per day for 10 days. Not FDA approved for this indication. Eye Care: artificial tears five times per day and to tape the eye closed during sleep. Surgical Decompression: probably not beneficial.
