Dry Skin Dry Skin H ome Announcements After Hours Care Contact Us General Information Health Insurance Immunizations Medical Services Patient ' s Rights Patient Handouts Pharmacy Preventive Medicine Service Charges S HS Forms SHAC STUDENT AFFAIRS LINKS Dry skin and its treatment is important because it is a common denominator ofnumerous dermatologic conditions: eczema, ichthyosis, and hand dermatitis, to name a few.Dryness results from the evaporation of water and natural oils from the skin.Consequently, the goal of all therapies is to reduce moisture evaporation and restore skinwater, and to a lesser extent, oil content. Lifestyle and occupational habits which clearly contribute to dry skin include the useof detergent soaps, frequent washing or bathing in hot water, and solvent use. The use oflined protective rubber gloves can eliminate many hand rashes. Review your choice of soap and consider a switch to something mild. Dry, windy, coldclimates (like ours in SF) are considerably tougher on dry skin disorders than warm moistareas like Hawaii. Despite the fact that the cosmetic industry has not produced the ideal moisturizer, studies have shown that most moisturizers will work if used frequently . For those with dishpan hands I frequently recommend transferring your moisturizer to asmall container you can conveniently carry with you so that it can be used after each handwashing throughout the day. Products work best if used immediately after skin is hydrated. The following are comments (but not endorsements) regarding several products: Vaseline (generic: petrolatum)--This is thick greasy stuff but is considered one of the best agents for dry skin. The tackiness makes it unacceptable to many. Aquaphor--Similar to Vaseline but a little thinner and more miscible with water, and comes in a convenient tube which you can carry with you. Eucerin emollient cream--Less greasy but still feels like Crisco (which works surprisingly well itself) Keri, Eucerin, DML, Lubriderm lotions--Each goes on easily but they are not usually as effective as cream formulations. Nivea, Complex 15 creams--Good medium-consistency products Alpha hydroxy acid (numerous brands) and urea (Aquacare/HP) preparations may be preferred if one of the goals is to remove dead scales, making skin smoother.
