Do you want smooth silky skin? Try this! (Boy I sound like a commercial.) Full Review I love coconuts. I go crazy when I hear about coconut smoothies, coconut lotions and creams. When I see coconuts at the supermarket, I stick 2-3 in our basket and tell my parents I'll eat every single piece of it. I never really go into The Body Shop because everything is expensive and I don't have a lot of money. (Does everyone see how I'm writing a lot more on this thing?) They were having a sale on "Body Butters." I have VERY dry skin, especially in the winter and summer. The winter my skin gets all dry from not moisturizing enough and the summer I am usually in the sun and it dries out my skin. I use sugar scrubs in the winter but I hate scraping my sunburn in the summer. I like using creams that will make my gross flaky skin turn as smooth as a baby's bottom. I like smelly coconut ones too. :o) But I don't want to feel like a total greaseball after I put it on. At The Body Shop I looked at the trial size body butters but I figured I should just get the big one because it was a better value. I wound up buying a 6.9 oz for $15 instead of a whopping $20. (I'm THE BEST bargain hunter.) I asked a worker what I can get for dry skin and she handed me a pair of $2 exfoliating gloves. (I guess she figured I was a teenager and didn't have cash - I had $40 on me.) I was like No, no hunny I would like a cream. So then she gave me a trial size $7 coconut cream body butter. Lets see - spend $8 more and get 6.9 oz? So that is what I did. It is a brown circular "tub" looking thing. (Don't you love the way I describe things?) You twist on and off the cap. I wish it was in a bottle, but it's like "butter" so I guess that's why is ISN'T in a bottle. The Coconut Cream In three words it is : WHITE - THICK - CREAMY. After a shower I open this stuff up, sit on my bed, put some into my hands and rub it on my legs, arms, chest, stomach, etc. It DOES NOT have a greasy, oily feeling. That is a good thing. Who wants to walk around looking like they are satuarated in oil. (Looks like me when I come home from the gym!) The cream goes right on and your skin feels so hydrated and sexy. No more flakes for me! The coconut scent is long-lasting. (It reminds me of the coconut rum Malibu.) You can put it on at 9:00 a.m and still smell it at 2:00 p.m.(It's like a little perfume!) Your skin feels silky smooth the next day. This is perfect for dates, just slap some on your hands and elbows and WHOOLAH - you have soft, silky, sexy skin. (I would know!) I don't have to use my sugar scrub as much. (Which is great because it's a crapload of money.) Another thing, it is GREAT on sunburn. I went to the beach and got sunburn all over my feet. I put on the coconut cream and sprayed Solarcaine on top of it. The next day my feet aren't RED and don't bother me when I wear shoes. The ingredients are on the bottom on the tub. water, coconut oil, cyclomethicone, shea butter, glycerin, cocoa butter, glyceryl stearate, peg-100 stearate, cetearyl alcohol, lanolin alcohol, phenoxyethanol, fragrance, methylparaben, propylparaben, xanthan gum, benzyl alcohol, disodium EDTA, sodium hydroxide, caramel. Pros A. Smells great and lasts long. B. Thick & Creamy C. 6.9 oz - will last me awhile. D. Not greasy/oily. E. Makes my skin feel hydrated, sexy, and not flaky. Cons Okay, $15 is a LITTLE steep. But I'm cheap. Last Comments This stuff is my favorite. I love everything about it. If you don't like coconuts, it's really simple, don't buy this. If you've read our article How Sun Tans and Sunburns Work , you know that skin is made up of two main layers: the epidermis on the outside and the dermis on the inside. Whether you are talking about sun tanning or self-tanning, the epidermis is where the action occurs. The epidermis is also made up of layers. The deepest layer of the epidermis, called the stratum basale ( basal layer ), is affected during sun tanning. The stratum corneum ( horny layer ) is the outermost layer of the epidermis -- it is this layer that is affected by most sunless-tanning products. There are several different kinds of sunless-tanning products available today. People have been able to pour on a tan since 1960, when Coppertone came out with the first sunless-tanning product -- QT or Quick Tanning Lotion. If you are old enough to remember this, then you are probably thinking of the incredibly orange hue this lotion produced. Since then, there have been several advancements made on the sunless-tanning front. These days, you can find tanning pills, sunless- or self-tanners and bronzers. You can smooth, swipe or spray on a light bronze glow or a deep, dark tan. Many of these products take 45 minutes to one hour to start taking effect, and once you factor in drying time, you could be looking at about three hours spent achieving that sun-free tan. According to the American Academy of Dermatology , the most effective products available are sunless- or self-tanning lotions that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA is a colorless sugar that interacts with the dead cells located in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. As the sugar interacts with the dead skin cells , a color change occurs. This change usually lasts about five to seven days from the initial application. Every day, millions of dead skin cells are sloughed off or worn away from the surface of your skin. In fact, every 35 to 45 days, you have an entirely new epidermis. This is why tans from sunless- or self-tanning lotions will gradually fade -- as the dead cells are worn away, so is your tan. For this reason, most of these products suggest that you reapply the sunless- or self-tanner about every three days to maintain your "tan." Although gels, lotions or sprays that contain DHA are said to be the most reliable and useful, there are dozens of other types of products on the market. Tanning accelerators -- lotions or pills that usually contain the amino acid tyrosine -- claim that they stimulate and increase melanin formation, thereby accelerating the tanning process. At this time, there is no scientific data available to support these claims. Another sunless-tanning product is a tanning pill that contains canthaxanthin , which is most commonly used as a color additive in certain foods. Although the FDA has approved the use of canthaxanthin in food, it does not approve its use as a tanning agent. When used as a color additive, only very small amounts of canthaxanthin are necessary. As a tanning agent, however, much larger quantities are used. After canthaxanthin is consumed, it is deposited all over your body, including in your skin, which turns an orange-brown color. These types of tanning pills have been linked to various side effects, including hepatitis and canthaxanthin retinopathy, a condition in which yellow deposits form in the retina of the eye. Another popular form of sunless tanning is the bronzer . These powders and moisturizers, once applied, create a tan that can easily be removed with soap and water. More like make-up, these products tint or stain your skin only until they are washed off. It's important to remember that most of these products, unless they contain an added sunscreen, will not protect you from the sun's UVA and UVB rays . Even products that do contain a sunscreen won't be of much help, since they lose their efficacy within hours of application. So, if you're planning to head outside to show off your new glow, be sure to apply some extra sunscreen. It converted me from a soap-only girl. Full Review I've never been one for specific body products. I've always been of the opinion that soap is soap, and specific cleansers were just fancy marketing. I have fairly sensitive skin on my face, and a lot of exfoliators leave my face burning in pain. You can imagine my surprise, then, when I borrowed my roommate's St. Ives Apricot Scrub Gentle Formula on a whim. The scrub itself has the familiar gritty feel of any scrub, but doesn't leave that burning feeling of non-gentle formulas. The granules actually feel like they're getting your face clean, and the whole product washes away with a fair amount of ease. I say a fair amount because the scrub is an almost soft clay thickness, and if you have fine hair it has a tendency to catch and stick. The scent is gentle, not overpowering or overly sweet, and doesn't linger after rinsing. Your skin feels very soft after one use, and remains soft throughout the day. Unlike some exfoliating products, there's no strange oily layer on your skin after rinsing. I found this for $3.49 at a local grocery store, and it can also be found at drugstores such as Walgreens and big box stores like Target. I've also seen it at listed at drugstore.com. Overall, I'm very happy with my experience with this St. Ives product. My skin is softer and healthier looking since I've used it. I guess facial cleansers do serve a purpose!
