Dry skin is a very common skin condition, usually characterized by irritated skin and itchiness. Dry skin often worsens in the winter, when the air is cold and dry. In addition, frequent bathing can aggravate dry skin. Dry skin may become flaky or scaly. However, dry skin symptoms may resemble other skin conditions or result from other disorders such as an underactive thyroid or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Always consult your physician for a diagnosis. Treatment for dry skin: Treating dry skin may be as simple as keeping the skin moist - by taking fewer baths and using ointments or creams that keep the moisture in. Treatment may also include: avoiding harsh soaps, detergents, and perfumes, which tend to dry the skin avoiding rubbing or scratching the skin, which can aggravate the symptoms and cause infection applying a salicylic acid solution or cream (which removes the top layer of skin) - if the skin is scaly Click here to view the Online Resources page of this Web Site. Skin rashes may appear with too much sun or heat exposure, contact with certain plants, or insect bites. Keep in mind, rashes are not always the result of an allergic reaction. Sun/Heat Rash Fair skinned individuals are more prone to develop sun rash. Small reddish blisters or small or large spots appear on areas of the skin that have been exposed to sunlight. This rash, which can appear immediately or within a few hours, is extremely itchy. The best way to prevent this rash is to wear a high sun protection factor sun screen while in the sun. Photoallergic Dermatitis Exposure to the sun can sometimes cause adverse reactions for some people. These reactions are often caused by the action of the sun on skin exposed to the chemicals found in cosmetics, perfumes, soaps, topical medications or sun tan lotions. Drug-Induced Photosensitivity Also some medications may make an individual sun sensitive. This is known as drug-induced photosensitivity. A skin rash may develop for people who take birth control pills, blood pressure medicine, antihistamines, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and some antibiotics. Prickly Heat A common rash caused by perspiration retention is miliaria, commonly known as prickly heat. Heat and humidity play a big role in causing prickly heat. When the sweat ducts become clogged or plugged by prolonged exposure to perspiration, they break open, allowing sweat to escape just below the skin which causes the rash. Plant Rashes Everyone is familiar with the rash caused by poison oak, poison ivy, or poison sumac. Did you know there are other plants that can also cause skin irritation? To name a few: Alyssum Daffodils Ginkgo tree fruit Hyacinths Ivy Japonese Boxwood Lady Slipper Orchid Lantana Pencil Trees Poinsettias Primrose Stinging Nettles Biting Insects A small, painless swelling or an intense itching rash may form at the site of the bite of an insect, such as a mosquito or horsefly. How to Treat a Rash The first step in treating an itchy rash is not to scratch. Scratching can lead to an infection which might need antibiotics to clear. Most rashes go away without treatment. Sun tan lotion - time out and need for dialogue Updated 01/06/01 Sun tan lotion - time out and need for dialogue The current issue about suntan lotion is important because we can expect more situations of this type; situations where new and worrying knowledge indicates that some chemicals can be rather problematic. By Danish EPA Director General Steen Gade (Editorial in the Danish EPA magazine "MiljDanmark", June 1, 2001) Perhaps the sun is shining when you read this. Perhaps you have doubts about whether or not to use suntan lotion because you have heard somewhere that there is a risk that suntan lotion contains substances that cause hormonal imbalances. The Danish EPA does not say and has never said that people should stop using suntan lotion. Unfortunately, a number of media have presented the issue in this way, and this has caused a lot of people concern about using suntan lotion at all. Obviously this is a problem. The risk of developing skin cancer is so great that the Danish EPA fully and completely supports the sun advice from the National Board of Health, including the advice on the use of suntan lotion. When a Swiss study showed that three UV screens have hormone-like effects, we were very worried, and when the media wanted to know whether Danes could safely use suntan lotion we told the truth: We are concerned, and we need time out before we can provide an answer. In the meantime, there should be no uncertainty as to whether there is any problematic suntan lotion in the shops, and therefore we recommend that retailers voluntarily take the potentially unsafe lotions off the shelves. At the same time, we made a list showing that there were lots of suntan lotions without the three sun-screens that are under suspicion. We did this precisely to create confidence in the use of suntan lotions. Incidentally, I am certain that the turbulence would have been greater if we had said that people should just continue to use lotions while we were checking if they were dangerous. On 30 April the Danish EPA announced that with our current knowledge we did not feel that there was any reason to take further steps in connection with two of the substances. At the time of writing, the risk is still being assessed for the third substance, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, which several studies have shown to be problematic. This issue is also important because we can expect more situations of this type; where new and worrying knowledge indicates that some chemicals can be rather problematic. This is not because we have been inattentive to what is going on around us, but because we are surrounded by thousands of chemicals that give us many benefits; chemicals which we do not, however, know much about. In the EU, Denmark is fighting for better studies of chemicals and to make industry more responsible for assessing substances and the way they are used in products. A long road still lies ahead, though. We will probably see more cases where authorities and politicians have to handle risks on a basis of limited knowledge. The paradox is that the cases arise partly because in Denmark and in the EU we are currently working more intensively in this field than ever before. It would be professionally inappropriate for us to claim that we will always be able to give quick, precise and correct answers on how to act on new, worrying knowledge. Whether we like it or not, we will sometimes need time out, as in the case of the three problematic UV screens in suntan lotion. Here comes the dilemma. What are we going to say and do in situations where we feel things look problematic while knowledge is being gathered? I am glad that, in this particular case, we issued a prompt and honest statement. However, I am obviously also aware that we have received both positive and negative critique for the way we handled the case, and that the general public have diverse expectations of us that go in different directions. On one hand there is the expectation that we will issue prompt and honest statements on the knowledge and uncertainty that we have. On the other hand there is the expectation that the authorities will not say anything until they have a definite and precise answer. Actually, I think that the same person often has both of these expectations at the same time. In a way this is understandable, even though it puts the authorities in an insoluble dilemma. Since the knowledge we have about the chemicals in our society is limited, we can expect to experience more situations where we find ourselves in this dilemma. Therefore, in the near future we will attempt to open a dialogue about when and how to give information in similar situations; a dialogue about risk management and communication with consumers, retailers, media, manufacturers, politicians, etc. Obviously, we cannot just wave a magic wand and have dilemmas turn into easy issues, but with the help of dialogue, it will hopefully be more clear that we are dealing with difficult problems, with no easy solutions.
