FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! The right (& wrong) ways to cleanse, moisturize & exfoliate your skin You probably learned in school that your skin is your body's largest organ. What you probably weren't taught is how to properly care for your skin. The truth is no matter your age or skin type, the minute you start taking care of your skin -- keeping it clean, nourished & pampered -- it will respond in gratitude & you will reap the benefits. Here I show you tips on how to properly care for your skin, from the right way to wash your face, to the best moisturizers & UV protection. Before we start with the proper daily 4-step skincare routine, you'll need to know your skin type. How you carefor your skin is utterly dependent on the type of skin you have: oily, normal/combination, dry, sensitive or sun-damaged. Check out this article to determine what skin type you are. The Basic 4-Step Skincare Regimen Step 1: Cleansing Simple is key here. You need to find a good cleanser that your skin respondswell to, and stick with it. (I list the best cleansers for skin types in this article ). Avoid soap at allcosts. According to Rona Berg, in her book, 'Beauty,'a French cosmetics executive once told her 'soap should only evertouch your skin from the neck down.' Most cleansers contain oil, water & surfactants. The oil dissolves oil on your face,surfactants dissolve dirt & makeup & the water washes it all away. The secret is finding the right mix of oil. Too much onyour skin will clog pores, while too little will dry it out. This is why you need to know your skin type. Most women need only clean their faces at night. In the morning, a splash of lukewarm water is all you need. However, if you apply moisturizer at night, you will need to cleanse in the morning, too. Never wash your face with hot or cold water (both hot & coldwater causes broken capillaries) & never go to bed with makeup on, you run the risk of clogging your pores. Also be careful about over-cleansing your skin . Here's the best way to wash your face: Use warm water to loosen dirt & clogged pores. Use a dime-sized bit of cleanser &gently apply it in a circular motion, then rinse with cool water. Cool water tends to tighten the pores. You'll also wantto take off your makeup with a proper makeup remover. Step 2: Exfoliate 'The most important thing you can do for bright, glowing skin is gentle daily exfoliation,' Katie Rodan, clinical assistant professor at Stanford University, said in Allure's April 2005 issue. 'Not weekly, daily. Do it in the shower every morning, a routine like brushing your teeth.' Every 3 weeks, skin cells are replenished, meaning new skin cells make their way up fromthe lowest level of the epidermis. The secret to exfoliating is to make way for new skin cells by getting rid of deadskin cells. Removing dead skin cells helps give your skin a youthful, fresh appearance not only because new skin cells arefresh & plump, but because getting rid of the dead skin allows your skin to absorb moisturizer more readily. Exfoliation is the step most people skip in their daily skincare routine. But trust me, if you start properly exfoliating your skin, you will notice an almost immediate difference. So how much should you exfoliate? If you have oily or combination skin, you'll need to exfoliate 4 or 5 times a week, after you cleanse. If you have dry skin or sensitive skin, it's recommended that you exfoliate once or twice a week.You'll actually need to exfoliate more in summer & any hot months because sweat acts like glue & will cause your dead skin cells to stick together and coat your skin.Many women with mature or sun-damaged skin (a sure sign: wrinkles) have turned to different types of hydroxies which act as deep exfoliants. According to Berg, one of the reasons men's skin looks more youthful than women's is because mentend to exfoliate daily when they shave. Should you use a toner? Some people swear by toners, but many beauty experts do not. Toners are meant to remove all remaining traces of oil, makeup & dirt, but a good cleanser should do this. So go ahead, skip it & save money. Turns out only copy machines really need toner. Step 3: Moisturize A basic law of beauty is that everyone, no matter her skin type, should moisturize. Even ifyour skin is oily, it will benefit from moisturizers. (The only exception is those with acne). Why? Moisturizers attract moisture & draw it into the skin. They also seal in moisture (Berg calls this the 'Saran Wrap effect') & plump skin cells. So how much should you moisturize? Your skin will tell you. When your skin is tight, it's crying out for moisture. Be carefulnot to overmoisturize -- this can cause pore-clogging. Parke in the 1970s. Renewed interested in this topic in the mid-1980s included the muscle model approach to facial expression of Keith Waters. Parke and Waters have written the definitive text on Computer Facial Animation . A website (see below) provides an overview of the book. The late 1980s also saw the first attempts at visual speech synthesis, including the work of Dominic Massaro and Michael Cohen (who are both at the UCSC Perceptual Science Laboratory ), and number of other researchers (see the bibliography ). Massaro has recently published a book, Perceiving Talking Faces , that summarizes the issues in visual speech synthesis and shows how computational auditory-visual models can be used to explore issues in speech perception and pattern recognition. Computer-generated Ananova is programmed to deliver news 24 hours a day. Here are some newspaper reports . digital CRL Facial Animation Project (Keith Waters) "CRL's talking synthetic face is essentially the visual complement of the speech synthesizer DECtalk. Where DECtalk provides synthesised speech, CRL's Face provides a synthetic face. By combining the audio functionality of a speech synthesiser with the graphical functionality of a computer-generated face, a variety of new applications can be developed. For example, a synthetic character can give a multimedia presentation, or a synthetic character can monitor a system and report anomalies as a feedback agent. One of the more intriguing possibilities is the construction of an interactive face agent capable of assisting and conversing with the user." We also have tested a general fuzzy logical model ofperception in a variety of domains, including perception and understanding of language,memory, object, shape and depth perception, learning, and decision making. Research is alsobeing carried out in reading." Speech: A Sight to Behold An online article by Barbra Rodriguez for science notes: summer 1996 . Focuses on Baldy: the UCSC PSL 3D computerized talking head model. "When someone talks, you pick up clues about what they're saying from their facial maneuvers. Scientists are using a computerized talking image of a human head to learn about their visual language clues. Such talking heads will also allow new ways of communicating in the future." ICP Visual Speech Synthesis "Three-dimensional modelisation of the different organs involved in speech production: lips, jaw, tongue for thevocal tract and skin. The animation of the different parts of the face model can be done, either by video analysis of a speaker's face,or from text by means of a rule-based system." FaceView (Alex Pentland, MediaLab, MIT) "The FaceView project is concerned with observing, understanding, and synthesizing actions of the face andhead. The current work on this project is focused on the areas of head-tracking, facial expression recognition,and non-rigid deformation of head models for animation." MikeTalk ( Tony Ezzat and Tomaso Poggio , MIT Center for Biological and Computational Learning ) "The goal of this project is to create a videorealistic text-to-audiovisual speech synthesizer. The system should take as input any typedsentence, and produce as output an audio-visual movie of a face enunciating that sentence. By videorealistic we mean that the finalaudiovisual output should look like it was a videocamera recording of a talking human subject. " Multimodal Speech Synthesis (KTH) "Our approach to audio-visual speech synthesisis based on parametric descriptions of both the acoustic and visual speechmodalities, in a text-to-speech framework. The visual speech synthesisuses 3D polygon models, that are parametrically articulated and deformed.Currently, we are working with two different parametric models for visualsynthesis : "Holger", which is an extended version of a facemodel developed by F. Parke (1982), and "Olga", which was developed inthe Olga-project. The auditory synthesis is based on a source-filter formant-basedgeneration model. Parameter trajectories for both modalities are calculatedby a text-to-speech rule system. Sosovec, RN, MS, CNAA Increased glove usage and associated behaviors may result in some individuals experiencing an increase in skin irritations or even contact dermatitis. By undertaking a consistent, effective hand care regime, health-care professionals will maintain the integrity of their skin and their first line of defense against bloodborne pathogens and other infectious material. A hand care protocol should address the following: Hand washing Use of lotions/moisturizers Appropriate glove usage Hand Washing. The purpose of hand washing is to remove soil and transient microorganisms. After glove removal, hand washing rids the hands of powder and other debris. Wash hands thoroughly with an appropriate hand soap or antiseptic. Rinse hands thoroughly to remove residual soap. Dry hands appropriately with single-use towels or warm-air dryers. Concerns Frequent hand washing may dry skin. Some hand soaps may contain harsh detergents. Residual soap may become an irritant. Aggressive use of paper or other single-use towels may be irritating. Recommendations Wash hands prior to donning and immediately after removing gloves. Use a good-quality soap or antiseptic that is not harsh or caustic. Thoroughly rinse hands. Gently dry hands, pat dry or air dry. Use of Lotions/Moisturizers. Hand lotions will prevent dry skin and reduce the risk of developing skin irritations and contact dermatitis. Frequent and consistent use of an appropriate lotion is an integral component of a hand care regime. Concerns Not all lotions are compatible with antiseptic products. Hydrocarbon-based products are NOT compatible with latex gloves. Products containing mineral oil, petroleum or lanolin should not be used when wearing latex gloves. Recommendations Frequently apply appropriate hand lotion. Water-based lotions, such as Amino+Derm lotion, are preferred when wearing latex gloves. Appropriate Glove Usage. Some individuals may be sensitive to either the chemicals used in the manufacturing of gloves or the protein allergen in natural rubber latex. These sensitivities may be manifested as irritations, contact dermatitis or allergic reactions defined as either Type IV or Type I hypersensitivity. Most skin reactions are irritations, and most irritations can be managed by improved hand care and appropriate gloving practices. Dermal Reactions Irritations (Non-Allergic) Signs & Symptoms : Acute: Redness, burning, itching, pain. Chronic: Dry, crusty, hard bumps, sores, fissures, cracks. Signs and symptoms typically stop at the wrist where glove contact ceases. Potential Causes: Hand soaps, antiseptics, scrub solutions, glove chemicals. Glove powder, if not thoroughly washed off hands Climate cold, windy, or hot and arid. Emotional stress. Inappropriate hand care. Inappropriate glove usage. Management: Identify and remove causative agent. Allow hands to heal. Undertake a consistent hand care regime. Recommendations: Do not assume that the glove is the causative agent. Consider changing hand soaps. If the glove is determined to be the irritant, do not conduct a trial with another brand or glove type until hands are completely healed. Glove liners may be beneficial. Use of water-based hand lotions is encouraged. With powder-related irritations, powder- free gloves may be considered. Synthetic gloves may be indicated since they do not contain the same chemicals as latex gloves. Chemical Allergy - Type IV Hypersensitivity Signs & Symptoms: Itching, drying, redness, crusting, thickening of skin, hard bumps, sores, papules, vesicles. Signs and symptoms may spread up the arm beyond the border of the glove. Potential Causes or Predisposers: Glove chemicals: accelerators, preservatives, colorants, other additives. Poison ivy, poison oak. Soaps, detergents, disinfectants Individuals with chronic eczema Individuals who have other allergies. Management: Identify and remove causative agent. Allow hands to heal. May seek intervention from a dermatologist or an allergist. Glove selection: Nitrile, synthetic or one that is designed to reduce concentrations of chemical accelerators. NOTE: A chemical allergy, Type IV hypersensitivity will not progress systemically or to anaphylaxis. Protein Allergy - Type I Hypersensitivity Signs & Symptoms: Local: Moist, pink, raised hives, or urticaria, often blanched in center. Systemic: May produce swollen eyelids or face or respiratory distress; rarely progresses to anaphylaxis. Potential Causes or Predisposers: Natural rubber latex protein allergen. Individuals who are atopic or have a history of allergy or clinical reactivity. Possible cross-reactivity to certain food allergies: avocado, banana, chestnut, kiwi and other fruits and vegetables. Management: Identify and remove causative agent. Seek medical management from a physician. Glove selection: Synthetic or nitrile exam gloves; synthetic surgical gloves, such as neoprene or polyisoprene. Recommendations: If you suspect that you may be sensitive to latex protein allergen, seek medical advice from your physician or employee/occupational health department. If you have been assessed as allergic to the protein allergen in latex and are currently wearing gloves labeled hypoallergenic, take note. Most gloves in the market today labeled hypoallergenic DO CONTAIN natural rubber latex and are specifically formulated for chemical allergies, not latex allergies. Hand Care Plan Hand washing: Routine hand washing should not exceed 15 seconds. Hand washing for procedural aspects of patient care should not exceed 30 seconds. Use tepid water Use a mild hand soap or antimicrobial agent Rinse hands thoroughly Dry gently Liberally apply a water-based lotion or moisturizer NOTE: Do not use over-the-counter hand care products in the clinical environment.
