This document willXML-RPC vs. SOAP XML-RPC vs. SOAP by kate rhodes masukomi@masukomi.org A simple guide to choosing the best protocol for your XML Remote Procedure Call needs. Within the world of XML there are two main ways to implement a Remote Procedure Call (RPC). XML-RPC and SOAP. This document will explore the differences between these two methods in order to help you decide which is best suited to your needs. General information XML-RPC http://www.xmlrpc.com XML-RPC is "...a spec ( http://www.xmlrpc.com/spec ) and a set of implementations that allow software running on disparate operating systems, running in different environments to make procedure calls over the Internet. It's remote procedure calling using HTTP as the transport and XML as the encoding. XML-RPC is designed to be as simple as possible, while allowing complex data structures to be transmitted, processed and returned." - xmlrpc.com XML-RPC's Goals XML-RPC is very humble in its goals. It doesn't set out to be the solution to every problem. Instead it seeks to be a simple and effective means to request and receive information. "We wanted a clean, extensible format that's very simple. It should be possible for an HTML coder to be able to look at a file containing an XML-RPC procedure call, understand what it's doing, and be able to modify it and have it work on the first or second try... We also wanted it to be an easy to implement protocol that could quickly be adapted to run in other environments or on other operating systems." - xmlrpc.com Comments The spec itself is roughly seven pages long, including examples and a FAQ, and is extremely easy to understand. Any competent programmer should find no difficulty whatsoever in implementing XML-RPC in their software after reading its spec. SOAP 1.1 http://www.w3.org/TR/SOAP/ "SOAP is a lightweight protocol for exchange of information in a decentralized, distributed environment. It is an XML based protocol that consists of three parts: an envelope that defines a framework for describing what is in a message and how to process it, a set of encoding rules for expressing instances of application-defined datatypes, and a convention for representing remote procedure calls and responses." - the SOAP spec. SOAP makes extensive use of namespacing and attribute specification tags in almost every element of a message. For example when mixing data types within an array you have to set the SOAP-ENC:arrayType to indicate mixed data types within the array in addition to specifying the type of each element of the array. SOAP's Goals SOAP tries to pick up where XML-RPC left off by implementing user defined data types, the ability to specify the recipient, message specific processing control, and other features. Comments Weighing in at 40 pages the SOAP spec is complex and filled with little gems like, "Using SOAP for RPC is orthogonal to the SOAP protocol binding." If you ask me, it isn't even remotely something I would call "lightweight" and they threw out the most important feature of XML-RPC, its ease of use. Contrary to popular belief, SOAP has not been ratified by the W3C. As of this writing it is just a submission, which, essentially, means they thought it was nifty enough to start a discussion about it. Features & Benefits XML-RPC Datatypes Scalars: Type Example 32-bit signed integer -12 boolean 0 or 1 ASCII string hello world double-precision signed floating point number -12.214 date/time (iso 8601) 19980717T14:08:55 base64-encoded binary eW91IGNhbid0IHJlYWQgdGhpcyE= Structs: In XML-RPC structs define an anonymous set of name value pairs. "A <struct> contains <member>s and each <member> contains a <name> and a <value>. "The value(s) can be of any data type Arrays: XML-RPC arrays define an anonymous grouping of elements with no limitation mixing data types like integers and strings within the same array. "An <array> contains a single <data> element, which can contain any number of <value>s." Stability XML-RPC has been around for a while and, while it isn't maintained by a standards committee, it is stable and open to community input. Simplicity XML-RPC's simplicity is its greatest feature. It is extremely easy to understand, implement, and debug. The syntax is so uncomplicated that it is very easy to find, and avoid, mistakes. SOAP Datatypes Scalars: Type Example 32-bit signed integer -12 boolean 0 or 1 ASCII string hello world signed floating point number -12.214 date/time 2001-03-27T00:00:01-08:00 base64-encoded binary eW91IGNhbid0IHJlYWQgdGhpcyE= Structs: SOAP structs define a set of name value pairs. Structs can be named. Arrays: SOAP arrays define a grouping of elements with no limitation mixing data types like integers and strings within the same array. Arrays can be named. Array of Bytes: An array of bytes MAY be encoded as a single-reference or a multi-reference value. The rules for an array of bytes are similar to those for a string. In particular, the containing element of the array of bytes value MAY have an "id" attribute. Additional accessor elements MAY then have matching "href" attributes." Polymorphic Accessors: An accessor "...that can polymorphically access values of several types, each type being available at run time. A polymorphic accessor instance MUST contain an "xsi:type" attribute that describes the type of the actual value." Ex. <cost xsi:type="xsd:float">29.95</cost> Enumerations: Based on the "XML Schema Part 2: Datatypes" ( http://www.w3.org/TR/xmlschema-2/ ), which is still just a recommendation, a SOAP enumeration is "...a list of distinct values appropriate to the base type." It is supported for all simple types except boolean. User Defined Data-Types: Developers can define their own simple, or complex, data types. Customizing SOAP's greatest feature is its ability to step past XML-RPC's limitations and customize every portion of the message. This ability to customize allows developers to describe exactly what they want within their message. The downside of this is that the more you customize a message the more work it will take to make a foreign system do anything beyond simply parsing it. Big Co. Support SOAPs two biggest developers are Microsoft and IBM. Microsoft has incorporated SOAP into it's latest OS and Visual Studio. As usual though, MS has decided that they don't need to adhere to the whole spec. In their SOAP for Java SDK they modify the namespace (which breaks some other implementations), use a limited combination of 1.0 and 1.1 fault codes (and improperly document it), and include many serious bugs. IBM seems to have gotten almost everything right in their implementation. Limitations XML-RPC Method Calls XML-RPC calls methods via its methodName property which "may only contain identifier characters, upper and lower-case A-Z, the numeric characters, 0-9, underscore, dot, colon and slash." For most purposes this is just fine, however it makes it particularly difficult when you need to pass an object as an argument. Named Data Structures The structs (hashes) and arrays are always anonymous. When passing multiple structs or arrays programmers need to rely on the order of the parameters (<param>) they are contained in to differentiate between each struct or array. This isn't a significant problem but there are cases when being able to name your structs and arrays would be nice. Simplicity As noted above, simplicity is also XML-RPC's greatest limitation. Although most all of your RPC needs can be accomplished with it, there are some things that you just can't do without bending over backwards, like passing an object as an argument to a function, or specifying which portion of a receiving application the message is intended for. SOAP Stability Currently SOAP 1.1 is a submission to the W3C ( http://www.w3.org ). This means it is not an official standard and its specifications can, and almost assuredly will, change at any time. There are a lot of cooks in the kitchen right now. Documentation Last updated in May the SOAP spec is filled with mistakes and contradictions and points to other specs which are themselves moving targets. According to Dave Winer, one of the spec's authors, Microsoft and IBM have taken it upon themselves to add in the WSDL ( http://www.w3.org/TR/wsdl ) layer without consulting the other authors. This doesn't bode well for developers who need something they can count on remaining unchanged, or almost unchanged, for the forseeable future. Any current SOAP implementation may be incompatible with future revisions of the spec, although it should be noted that SOAP is far enough along that most of its spec should remain essentially the same. Comparison Feature XML-RPC SOAP basic scalars yes yes structs yes yes arrays yes yes named structs and arrays no yes detailed fault handling yes yes short learning curve yes no Developers specified character set no yes (US-ASCII, UTF-8, UTF-16) Developer defined data types no yes Can specify recipient no yes require client understanding no yes message specific processing instructions no yes When you get right down to it XML-RPC is about simple, easy to understand, requests and responses. It is a lowest common denominator form of communication that allows you to get almost any job done with a minimum amount of complexity. SOAP, on the other hand, is designed for transferring far more complex sets of information. It requires profuse attribute specification tags, namespaces, and other complexities, to describe exactly what is being sent. This has its advantages and disadvantages. SOAP involves significantly more overhead but adds much more information about what is being sent. If you require complex user defined data types and the ability to have each message define how it should be processed then SOAP is a better solution than XML-RPC (be sure to check out language specific solutions to this problem like java's RMI ( http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/rmi/ )). But, if standard data types and simple method calls are all you need then XML-RPC will give you a faster app with far fewer headaches. Review Summary About the Author "What are the sprinkles for?" he asked. Hello? I'm a cupcake, remember? Nov 28 '05 (Updated Nov 29 '05) Author's Product Rating Pros Smells and tastes great, light, airy, on sale at some sites for a low price Cons Doesn't moisturize the skin well, expensive if you get it at regular price (Don't!) The Bottom Line It's so frivolous, I can't believe it but I actually like it. Creamy smells sexy, not matronly, and tastes just sweet enough without being sickeningly so. Doesn't moisturize well though. Full Review I have been curious about Jessica Simpsons Dessert Beauty line of tasty body and lip stuff for a long time. I think, because I love tasty lip butters and glosses, that I naturally want to try other body items that not only have great scent but taste too. Of course, the Dessert Beauty Line wasnt made for the wearer to taste but for others to enjoy. I refused, however, to spend the incredibly inflated prices being asked for the line so I steadfastly resisted my urge to indulge. When I saw a number of Dessert Treat products at very reasonable prices at www.scentiments.com and www.sephora.com, I patted myself on the back for waiting out the honeymoon period and then started ordering. At last, I could afford to be frivolous! The first item I got was Dessert Beauty Whipped Body Cream With Candy Sprinkles in Creamy along with the body scrub and lip gloss. I also snagged a couple body butters from the line and even a blush. Hey, my frivolity knows no bounds. The Official Word This is from www.sephora.com: Kissable Whipped Body Cream With Candy Sprinkles Rich and creamy, super-whipped body cream is full of the things your skin loves. This delicious body smoother tastes as good as it smells - fresh, juicy and sweet (Juicy), like a fresh baked cake-y indulgence flavored with French vanilla and smooth caramel (Creamy), or a silky, sinfully rich milk chocolate and coconut confection (Dreamy). Slather it on yourself or a friend to be completely smoochable and delectable. And the sprinkles? Well, they're just for fun! Simply decorate and dig in ... As I said, I got the Creamy flavor/scent which is vanilla and caramel. The Packaging The cream comes in an eight-ounce can with a plastic pull off cap. In the top of the cap are red candy sprinkles. The can is nicely decorated in bronze and black. The top is exactly like a hair mousse top and the consistency of the cream is that of hair mousse. The cap pulls off just like it does with hair mousse. Picture a pretty can of mousse and you have this creams look in your mind. The candy sprinkles shake out of the top after you remove the protective sticker covering the shaker holes. My Experience I love caramel (My first experience with sweet, tasty caramel powder didnt really pan out) and vanilla so it was a no brainer that I would go with Creamy. I decided against getting Juicy items since I figured I have loads of fruity scented butters and lotions and didn't need more even if it tasted great. I obviously am going to get the Juicy line soon (Its that gotta have it all mentality I am stuck with.). I am not a chocolate person so I wouldnt want to smell or taste like it so Dreamy wasnt a problem passing up. The can was encased in plastic and I tore that off and popped the lid. I shook up the can and squirted some of the mousse/cream out. The smell was nice. It wasnt exactly like caramel and French vanilla but very close. It smelled like a cake with butter frosting or like a sinful candy treat. The cream is white and is very light and airy. Obviously this stuff isnt to be taken as a serious skin moisturizer and I wasnt expecting great things from it in that way. It did absorb fast and leave my skin feeling almost exactly like it did before I used the cream. But thats OK because I tasted like a cupcake and everyone knows its better to taste good than to Well, lets just say that this cream is made to share and I forced my I want to watch the news husband to try some. Off me of course. He said it was nice smelling and tasting and liked it much better than the Urban Decay Caramel Flavored Body Powder I tried not long ago. He asked me what the sprinkles were for. I told him he needed to stop being practical for a change. Sheesh. The scent lingers quite a while. It isnt not overpowering by any means; it is subtle and warm. I like it. I bought the Creamy Sugar Scrub too (love it) and together, these make me smell like a bakery. Or a baker. Or, well, a walking cupcake. As far as moisturizing goes, nahhh. This isnt a good moisturizer. It is far too light and airy to be emollient. It is fine for nights out or nights in (if you know what I mean, wink wink) but, as an everyday moisturizer, it would never cut it. Plus, why would you want to waste it on work or running errands when its begging to tasted? The taste also lasts quite a while. Its sweet and sugary but not so much so that its overpowering. The scent and taste seem to be just right as far as how strong they should be to make a statement without coming off sickeningly sweet. I got my can for $14.00. It sells for $34.00 on the official Dessert Beauty website. There are a lot of good deals on this line because a new line of more playful scents and products has come out so you can get some of the original Creamy, Dreamy, or Juicy scents/flavors for a substantial discount now. I would never have considered paying $34.00 for something that I knew was just for fun and not a serious skin care product, but $14.00 well thats not so bad. Ingredients The cream: Deionized Water, Glycerine, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Polyethylene, Glycol 400 Monostearate, Sodium Stearate, Sucralose, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Postassium Sorbate (As a Preservative), Monoammonium Glycyrrhizinate, Citric Acid Candy Sprinkles: Sugar, Corn Starch, Confectioners Glaze, FD& C Red #40. Candy weight: Nt Wt 2 oz (56g) Buying Info As I mentioned, the Dessert Beauty line is moving over for the newer Dessert Treats line. However, all the original Dessert Beauty products are being sold at full price on the official website as well as many other sites so comparison shop! I was shocked that I was able to get this product at just $14.00, the scrub for $10.00, the Buttercream Body Butter for $10.00, the blush for $5.00, Lip Gloss for $12.00, and more. At those prices, you can afford to indulge and have some fun. The links below this review may lead you to the retailers who are selling the products at reduced rates. Many higher end cosmetic and beauty websites like www.sephora.com and some fragrance sites sell this line. I dont know if it is sold in brick and mortar stores since I am a chronic online impulse shopper. I assume, if it is sold on the Sephora website, it is also sold in the brick and mortar store, though. Conclusion I didnt expect this cream to moisturize well and it doesnt. Its not sticky or problematic. It goes on smooth, dries fast and leaves a tiny hint of moisture behind. The real winners are the scent and flavor. The scent is quite good. It settles into my skin and mixes with my body chemistry and leaves me smelling edible (and who doesnt want to smell edible? Except around grizzly bears, I guess) for hours. The taste is just enough to be sweet and tasty without being sickeningly so. The sprinkles are just an added little thing that you can experiment with or give to your kids. I really expected to hate this stuff. But I like it. I wont use it as a moisturizer but I will use it. I think, along with the scrub, and possibly the mist, it would last for all day or night both in scent and taste. I just went back to Sephora and Scentiments and bought a few more items before theyre gone. These are fun, flirty, and unique. But dont expect your skin to be drenched in moisture or to feel smooth and dewy after applying this particular product. Expect it to feel ever so slightly less dry and to smell and taste yummy. Then go find someone to taste you. I give this 4 stars. When the Buttercream Body Butter comes next week, if it is at least as good as DuWops Buttercream Body Cream and tastes truly like buttercream, I may have to buy a case of it. Yum! RELATED STORIES & LINKS American Society of Plastic Surgeons - Microdermabrasion American Society of Plastic Surgeons - Microdermabrasion A Look At Microdermabrasion NEW YORK, March 3, 2005 (CBS) Everyone seems to be talking about microdermabrasion. More than a million people will get it done this year. But what is it? How does it work? And does it hurt? The Early Show ConsumerWatch correspondent Susan Koeppen finds out. Cover Girl's ad has Rupaul's song in the background telling women, "You better work! Work it, girl!" And for years, women have been working it, doing just about anything to get that youthful glow, all in hopes of ending up with perfect skin. Now, they're even blasting their way to a better complexion. Dr. Heidi Waldorf says, "Microdermabrasion is one of the most popular, non-invasive procedures done in the United States today." Dr. Waldorf is a top dermatologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. She sees patients every day who want microdermabrasion. "The nice thing about it," she says, "is that someone can go in, have it done, and go right back to work." Patients like 42-year-old Adel Teplitz swear by it. She gets it done once a month, and says she looks ten years younger. How has it changed her face? "I would have to say it's smoother," Teplitz says, "More youthful looking in appearance - diminishing of fine lines." Dr. Waldorf says microdermabrasion will brighten your skin, smooth it out; your face will have a fresher look and feel, but you need to have realistic expectations. While it can work on fine lines and wrinkles, "It's not going to get rid of the deep lines," she says, "It's not the equivalent of a face lift." Here's how microdermabrasion works: Dr. Waldorf uses a wand to shoot crystals onto the skin. They remove dead skin cells, which are then sucked away by a vacuum. The procedure only takes about 5 to 10 minutes. But does it hurt? Maryann Protass is about to find out. She's trying microdermabrasion for the very first time. Why now? "I just feel like I'm reaching that age," Protass says. "I'm in my mid-30s now, and I am starting to notice a couple of lines, and my skin's not as youthful as it used to be, and basically to just refresh and renew." Experts say this procedure is perfectly safe when it's done right. But dermatologists like Dr. Douglas Altchek have seen a not-so-pretty side to microdermabrasion. Dr. Altchek says, "The field is not regulated. So anyone who feels like it can call themselves a micodermabrater." And that can lead to trouble. Dr. Altchek has helped several patients fix their skin after a bad experience with microdermabrasion performed by someone who was inexperienced in the procedure. He says, "I've seen a number of complications from microderabrasion ranging from abrasions, contusions, hematomas, black and blue marks, scrapes and burns." But what about those "at-home" microdermabrasion kits? Are they safe? Experts say: Yes, as long as you don't overuse them, and follow the directions closely. Dr. Waldorf says, "I'd recommend an at-home kit be used no more than once a week. Remember, the at-home kits are generally milder than the in-office procedure. But you can still get irritation." Maryann Protass decided to leave it up to a professional, and after her first try, she says she is satisfied. "I feel like I'm glowing," she says. "My skin feels soft, and it's just a fresh feeling. " She also says it did not hurt. And she is coming back for more. The cost: expect to pay $100 to $300 per session. To get the best results, you need 5 to 6 sessions over several months, and then, monthly maintenance. Microdermabrasion is not for people with severe acne, skin infections, or people who want to get rid of deep wrinkles. MMV, CBS Broadcasting Inc. All Rights Reserved.
