Microdermabrasion is a non-surgical, non-chemical procedure in which our skin care specialist removes the superficial layer of skin, improving irregularities in the skin’s surface. Who is a candidate for microdermabrasion? Return to home page Help with sensitive skin After having a shower I feel very hot and clammy and my skin feels itchy and tight. I also get very sweaty. The symptoms normally last for around half-an-hour. The severity of the symptoms varies, although they are worse when I wash my hair or when I use shower gel. I also get the same problems with having a bath, but to a lesser degree. I know that increased skin sensitivity can be a symptom of ME due to the nervous system nor working correctly. Is there anything that could be done to help my symptoms? Or is there anything I could do to help alleviate my symptoms myself? Im male and in my late teens. Dr Betty Dowsett, retired Microbiologist who has worked in the field of ME for over 20 years, replies: This symptom is common and is also well-described in multiple sclerosis where nerve endings are commonly stripped of their insulation (myelin sheath). This results in a remarkable sensitivity to heat. Demyelination also occurs in ME but almost always repairs itself. This means that many people with ME complain of the temporary after-effects of a shower or bath. A risk of only 0.5% in temperature is enough to cause this unpleasant skin reaction. My advice is that a bath is better than a shower (as you have noticed) and to not have the water too hot. Also, buy toiletries that are pH balanced, 100% perfume and colour free (such as the Simple range) and contain no animal ingredients. Alcohol-free deodorants are best. Aqueous cream can be helpful for inflamed skin. Full Review I recently bought some DuWop items and one purchase I made was a sampler pack with several different DuWop products in travel sizes. I was eager to try their Buttercream Body Cream because I love the smell (and taste) of butter cream frosting and it sounded so delicious. The Official Word This is from several websites that sell Buttercream: A little something just for you. This luscious moisturizer has an irresistible scent of buttercream frosting. Indulge yourself with this tempting treat that has all the fun...and none of the calories. The Packaging The tube I got is 1.7 ounces but the full size one is four ounces. It comes in a plastic see through tube that stands on its cap. The cap screws off and you squeeze the lotion out of a small hole from the top. The top of the tube is round like a roll on antiperspirant with a hole. An odd shape for a body lotion dispenser but it works just fine. The cream itself is the exact color of butter cream frosting. My Experience Like I said, I was eager to try this lotion so it was the first of the five items in the travel pack that I opened. The smell is incredible. It is exactly like the butter cream frosting on cakes and cupcakes. It’s absolutely delicious smelling. Application is easy; just squeeze a bit of the cream – which is quite thin in consistency – onto your body or into your palm and rub. Then inhale. Mmmm. I used the cream on my shoulders and arms and could smell that scent for hours. It made me hungry. I was amused that the packaging said, “Indulge yourself with this tempting treat that has all the fun and none of the calories. Warning: Repeated use may result in a sudden urge to eat your arm.” Amused because I really did get an urge to lick my arm. And so…I did. And no, it doesn’t taste like butter cream frosting. Unfortunately, the taste is sweet but not lickable and was sort of a let down after inhaling butter cream for an hour. Of course, DuWop makes no claims that the product tastes like anything but with a smell like that, how can it not? As far as moisturizing goes, Buttercream does a fair job. It’s much lighter than body butters and balms. It’s a nice light lotion that gives you a hint of moisture and a lot of scent. The Problem Here is the problem with Buttercream. While I love the smell of frosting and I could inhale it all day long, my “testers” (Husband, sons, and a few male friends) all said it was not a sexy scent nor even really appealing. They said it smelled like I was baking a cake in the kitchen. Like an older lady. Like, say, my grandmother. Hmm. Granted not only old ladies bake cakes but the scent seems to conjure up images of a domestic lady happily frosting cupcakes wearing her house dress and apron. That really isn’t the impression I want to leave when I walk by someone. In general, I like light or citrusy scents and I stay away from foody ones. This is my only food-scented lotion. Now I know why. Food is nice to inhale when it is being made or when you’re eating it but it’s not so great when you’re wearing it. I still really love the smell and use the lotion when I am at home to savor the sweet scent and to take me back to better days when my own mother would bake cakes and frost them with home made butter cream frosting in the kitchen with her apron on. But I don’t wear the cream when I go out. I think it is an indulgence just for me as the advertising says. The Ingredients Di Water, Jojoba Oil, Emulsifying Wax, Avocado Oil, Propylene Glycol, Sorbitol, Methylparaben, Artificial Flavor, FD&C Yellow 5 Buying Indo A full size tube of DuWop Buttercream costs about $17.00 for four ounces. You can buy DuWop products at most online beauty supply stores and some drugstores. DuWop products are also sold in some department stores. Their prices can be a bit steep and, from my experience, they are hit and miss. Some items are awesome, some are a bit strange, and a few are downright silly. The Buttercream line comes in the lotion, a sugar scrub, and a lip balm (which I believe has flavor. That is something I will definitely have to try.). Conclusion DuWop’s Buttercream does everything it says. It lightly moisturizes the skin and smells exactly like butter cream frosting. It isn’t super hydrating but gives enough moisture to normal skin to leave it feeling soft and supple. The smell is amazing. Many body products say they smell like something but, in fact, smell like chemicals or cheap rip offs of the original stuff. Not so with Buttercream. They nailed the scent. However, as much as I like the smell, I don’t think it is a great one to wear out if you’re going for a scent to be remembered by. Many people are judged by their fragrance and Buttercream, while yummy smelling, seems to give off a “woman baking a cake” impression that you may not want to remembered as. I know I don’t. I am older but I still want to leave behind a scent that says I am fresh, I am sexy, I am light, and maybe a tad wild. Buttercream certainly says none of that. It says, “Cupcakes for the whole class”. If you like the smell of butter cream frosting, this is the lotion to buy. If you don’t mind the fact that it doesn’t taste the way it smells (some food scented lines do have taste as well as scent) and you want a gentle, light moisturizer, this is a good one. I have no complaints. I will continue to use my tube until it is gone but probably won’t buy another. It’s fairly expensive and clashes with my perfumes. And, really, I don’t want to pass by someone and have them have fond memories of their grandma. Call me vain, but I’m still fighting this age thing and Buttercream isn’t helping me with it! I give this product three stars. It’s an average moisturizing cream. It is costly. And it smells luscious. Buy it for yourself to indulge in and let your mind wander back to a time when you didn’t have to just smell the frosting, you could eat it right out of the bowl with your fingers. But, if you’re looking for something sexy, Buttercream doesn’t seem to elicit that response, at least from my test subjects.
