Log in Find out more Sun cream standards "need tightening" Consumers are still unsure of which sun creams and tanning lotions will protect them against ultra violet rays, say The Trading Standards Institute The Trading Standards Institute is running a campaign to try to address the general level of ignorance among consumers as to which sun creams and tanning lotions will protect them against ultra violet rays. It has asked the European Commission to draw up minimum standards for sun protection, as well as improved rules on labelling on products currently, rules governing the manufacture of sun creams are the same as those for lipsticks. Judith Johnson of the TSI says that no sun care product offers 100 per cent protection, and the most important information to look out for is the Sun Protection Factor or SPF, which indicates the level of protection a cream provides. Most people should use a cream with an SPF of 15 to 20, advises the institute. Ms Johnson also pointed out that there is no such thing as a sun block. Will sun tan oil save you from cancer? by Dr Keith Hopcroft Health editor Good luck to the TSI, because it's going to have problems making sense of a very complex area. For starters, the link between the sun and skin cancer is far from clear. Intermittent exposure and sunburn at all ages certainly increase the risk of nasties like melanoma, but more prolonged sun exposure through work has been shown to reduce melanoma risk. Then there's the problem that sunscreens do protect against sunburn, but it's not established how effective they are at preventing cancer. Confused? Dont worry, it gets worse. The sun protection factor (SPF) may only refer to protection against the UVB wavelength, but the longer wavelength UVA is also a cancer risk. Besides, the SPF categories refer to experimental conditions in real life, nowhere near enough cream or lotion is used to provide the promoted protection. In fact, some experts have stated that, if sunscreens were ladled on as they should be, there would be no need for any with an SPF above 15. My advice is keep it simple. Avoid the really scorching hours, go for an SPF of 15 or more, put loads on, reapply it regularly and dont use it to lull yourself into a false sense of security that you can stay in the sun longer.
